    I thought that, then tried one of these fast settling steady compasses, a huge difference, worth the money.

    mudlugger: Recta is also a good make and do a v similar range to Silva, but Silva are much easier to get hold of.

    Don’t mean to hijack this thread, but without starting a new one about a compass, now that I know how to uses my basic compass (with the worst needle in the world) it’s now time to upgrade.
    Does it matter about having scales on the baseplate? I’m assuming most of the time while racing, the compass is used mostly to get adirection etc. I’ve not had to use one in racing yet so I’m not sure.
    The majority I’ve looked at have mm as standard if they don’t have any scales on. Thinking about the Silva Field Compass or the Expedition 4 as it has the new 1:40k scale, does this scale matter?
    Any advice appreciated.
