Been on the fells a year.

I just worked it out and it has been exactly 1 year to the day that i first ventured into the fells.

A year ago on a grotty day, i caught the bus from preston to keswick and headed up to walla grag via ashness bridge. It nearly killed me but i never looked back and it has changed me for the better.

I love this sport and everything that comes with it, im gradually toughening up and not being such a wimp.

Ive met some quality people and done some quality race and pushed my body to its limits every time.

    Amen.

    Happy Anniversary Al!

it's just about 3 years for me, and I still feel like a rank beginner, but I love it so!

We always remember the first time so well!
For me it was an August Bank Holiday thrash on Machen Mountain. And although I loved the ups it was the awesome lovely downhill plummet through the pine forest that made it so utterly addictive.
Within 3 years I was tilting at Snowdon, Scafell and the Ben from the cramped confines of a 30 foot fibreglass torture machine! Happy days but, 23 years later, each race is still just as special, just as exciting (well, not the second half the Brecon Beacons!).

And it was all Toffers fault!

Nice post Al! I love that its about 'the fells' and not about 'running' or 'athletics'. Also the Wainwrightesque bus journey out into Lakeland for your first run out

I thought you'd been at it longer than that, much longer. Did you run a lot before starting with the fells?

    I wish i did!

In high school i was good at cross country but we only used to train one morning a week from september up until december where we had all the regions decend to a local grammah school who have this quality course and race our arses off!
I did that until year 10 but packed it all in in year 11 and didnt start running again until 3 years later when someone tried to convince me to do the Rivington Pike race.
I only had a few weeks to try and get fit for the race but i started running every few days. The road runs gave me shin splints and ive only ever run on tarmac a handful of times since.
After 7 months of starting running i'd only clocked up 50 miles and i did a 10k. Was tough but enjoying it (once it was over) but much prefer to be off-road, getting muddy!
