    Talking Beginner's friendly fell races

    Hi!

I'm starting to get into fell running, a) because I'm sick of running on roads! and b) I live in Cumbria, so best make use of the fells!

I did my first marathon at Edinburgh this year, and as much as I enjoyed it, the trailing along the roads in training was doing my head in!

I've done a few trail races and a Salomon Turbo X this year, and would love a go at something more challenging. Any local races / ideas etc would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Heather, Carlisle

This is quite possibly the best short race in the calendar:-

SAT.NOV 14. DUNNERDALE (R). AS. 12.00 noon. 5m/1800' from the Blacksmiths Arms, Broughton Mills, Cumbria (GR 223905 on O.S. 96). £5 (includes food). Teams(3) free. ER/LK/NS. Over 16. Records: 35.51 K.Anderson 1991; f. 43.09 J.Kenyon 1993. No dogs on course. Parking restricted. Please park where instructed. No safety pins. Details: Andrew Gittins, Lowfield, Church Street, Broughton-in-Furness, LA20 6ER. Tel: 01229 715104. Email: [email protected] Website: bcrunners.org.uk

    I'll certainly be there!

    Hi,
I am also new to fell running, I have only done one race so far - at the russland valley sports, having tried the sprint I entered the short fell race, very low key but very enjoyable. I am intending to try a few out & back races to start with and will see how they go.

If either of you don't mind travelling to South Cumbria then keep a look out on the Helm Hill Runners website in a few weeks as I'll be publishing the Kendal Winter league fixture list. The races run between New Year and Easter. They are ideal for novices as they are all flagged therefore absolutely no navigation is required. They are on the short side compared to some (30 mins-ish for the winner, everyone back in the hour) Plus there are kids races every week too.
Fitness can't be stored. It must be earned over and over, indefinitely.

I suppose in answer to the question asked it depends on how fit the beginner is as some might be only able to complete a cs at first time of asking some maybe could do an al. Horses for courses i suppose.
