Beginner's friendly fell races

I'm new to all this too! Wouldn't really consider myself particularly fit (I've run a few 1/2 marathons and only really run once or twice a week!) and have never really done any fell running before. I'm normally just a keen hill walker but got roped into doing the Tigger Tor race (a BM) as my first ever fell run. despite the fact it was really icy and my aim was just to get round the course I had an absolute blast! Everyone was really friendly, the marshals were really encouraging. Am mow looking forward to my next fell race and have just entered my first mountain marathon!

Hi!

I'm starting to get into fell running, a) because I'm sick of running on roads! and b) I live in Cumbria, so best make use of the fells!

I did my first marathon at Edinburgh this year, and as much as I enjoyed it, the trailing along the roads in training was doing my head in!

I've done a few trail races and a Salomon Turbo X this year, and would love a go at something more challenging. Any local races / ideas etc would be greatly appreciated!

Probably any AS category race would be ok for you to get a feel of it all, during the agricultural show season most have out and backs up the nearest peak, but if you don't want to wait that long then the Jarret Jaunt is this saturday check out the thread in the races section. Agree with GeoffB about Dunnerdale, it's super.

Glaramara at 5ml /2100ft sounds a rigorous examination for a beginner too

If you were prepared to travel to South Wales for abeginner friendly AS, Longtown, 27 February, would be very suitable for a beginner... 3.2 miles, 1250 ft, no navigational challenges, nice hard up, fast down without it being treacherous, starting at the Crown Inn, Longtown, 2 pm 27/02/2010...

Also Sat 27th Feb in N. Lancashire, we have the Bleasedale Circle Fell Race, 5 miles 1250 feet and fully flagged. There is full kit requirement due to the exposed nature of these fell tops!
In addition to the entry fee, there is £1 per car for parking; all parking money goes to the village school as they allow us to use the playground for overflow car parking. So it pays to car share. Plus the ladies have pies and peas for sale afterwards.
