What were Smith et al thinking - and even now, what is he thinking - why has he not resigned? This will be used against all Aussies for decades, despite "only" being sport.
No excuses for what they did, but the issue of ball tampering does need addressing. OK to shine the ball, but not to roughen it. OK to put hair gel/suncream/lip balm on it, but not grit. OK to pick at it with a fingernail, or let adhesive from a hand bandage get on it - and so on.
Good to see Smith has gone. Let's hope he and all concerned are appropriately punished.
