    Re: Fellsman

I did the Fellsman for the first time last year and I took *way* too much food. I hadn't done many long events where food was provided so I wasn't sure how much to rely upon the checkpoint grub, so I erred on the side of caution. As it was, I didn't really need much else at all, as there was plenty of food provided and there was generally something that I could stomach - I ended up eating my own food mostly just so I didn't carry it all the way round!

This year I will probably just carry a bag or two of jelly babies (as well as the emergency 300g) and will primarily rely on checkpoint food. I think, through luck rather than judgement, I got my nutrition right last year as I found it fairly easy going and didn't have any significant lows. I hope I manage that trick this year, particularly as I may not be as fit.

I have vivid memories that the spaghetti hoops I had at about half way being the tastiest I have ever eaten...

Agree - food was great and having 'sloppy savoury stuff' that slid down well later in race was a real bonus.
Think I would always carry something of my own tho in case I want it at a point when no food/checkpoint is near

The food at the check points is good but I always liked a quick snack in between so munched on a bar of something. The hotdogs the year before last were a treat - I could have stayed and eaten dozens of them.

I wore Roclites last year and they see about right. I'm tempted to try X-Talons this year if I get enough training done in them beforehand.

Out of interest, why switch if you were happy with the Roclites? I wore Roclites on the Lakeland 50 and they were excellent; I 'm pretty certain my feet would have been trashed in X-Talons.
Are you predicting much wetter conditions this year?

I wore roclites for fellsman in 2009, lasportiva crosslites for Lakeland 50, both were comfy, no blisters. Never had any x-talons so can't comment.

I can run slightly faster in fell shoes, so if i wore a fell/trail combo i'd end up going round in circles!

I love X-Talons, Steve, but they're minimally cushioned and very light/flexible. I don't think they'd offer that extra firmness my feet need in an ultra.
