    Lost events - Garmin 610

After 9 days of running/hiking when I finally got back on-line I find that 2 events have gone missing despite having saved them using the reset button. One of them was over 7 hours in duration so I was aware that the battery was getting low so I saved it and restarted, planning on adding the 2 totals together - if the last section survived the battery draining completely - which it did but the 7 hour bit has vanished. The other missing event did not involve a low battery. Any suggestions on how to stop this happening again?

I don't know how much memory the 610 has but is it possible that they just got dumped in favour of new data? Gamins, when pushed for space, will dump the oldest runs rather than saying "full".

I've just found out exactly the same thing with my garmin 405 while 'running' the pembrokeshire coastal path for 11 days. I'd didn't lose all of the data but for the first 4 days I just have summary data available with no charts or ascent. I was hoping there'd be a way of digging out the missing data but from looking here that doesn't seem likely

My lost 7+ hour recce has somehow miraculously appeared - only for me to lose a 13 mile run with 25 hill reps whilst resetting - the screen froze on the countdown and whilst I have the distance and time all the other data has been lost - the today screen just shows all zeros.

When it works it is so good - when it doesn't it is so frustrating.

Latest problem - discharging rather than charging on the charging cradle! If you look at the Garmin forums this seems to be quite a common problem. Suggested solutions include using a computer to recharge rather than the mains, making sure the contacts, including those inside the 3 pin socket plug - are clean, and one chap suggested using a clothes peg to hold the watch on the charging cradle. After some fiddling it has recharged normally, though I had to do a soft reset to get it to turn on.

Got lost in a forest on Sunday - the normal navigator pulled out halfway - tried the "back to start" feature - not realizing it sends you back the way you came, even if you are almost back to where you started. The Garmin handbook/forums do not make this clear. Some people think it points you back to the start as the crow flies - it certainly does not. If your course was zig-zag it will tell you where to turn and the arrow will change direction suddenly - on straights/gentle curves the arrow direction drifts as appropriate. A useful feature, as long as you know what it does. I have yet to try getting all the way back to the start, or defying the arrow, to see how it responds.

I have a Garmin Edge 500 for the bikes and have had the same happening! However, the missing rides did turn up again miraculously a few days later, after recording new rides. Brandnew computer when this happened, so it certainly wasn't the memory! My old running 301 used to dump old runs in favour of new ones when the memory was full...

Flummoxed as to why the data wasn't there intially then re-appeared...

I think you can save memory by using smart recording rather than 1 second recording. I dont think the 405 had the choice of 1 second recording though so thats unlikely to help 405 owners who would have been using smart recording automatically. The 305 had it and it was reintroduced with the 410 I believe?

The "go to location" feature DOES point back directly to where you started - if of course you saved your start as a location!
