    One for the girls

Jade Goody was a wake up call to all of us but I know women who are convinced it won't happen to them and won't go for a smear.

If you're one of those please get down to your gp now.

I had my smear after dodging it for something like ten years; the result was abnormal and treatment was necessary. What a shock. I felt well and normal, had no symptoms and only had it done because it was raised when I moved and changed my gp.

I am now faced with more treatment because there are more abnormal cells.

Please don't be like me - go and have that dreaded smear. Early detection is everything.

    Thanks SS

It's not good but it isn't cancer - that would happen it it was left untreated.

Just a case of removing the affected tissue; they've done that once already. Not nice but a minor procedure. Worst case could be hysterectomy - I don't think it's that bad and I don't want any more kids anyway.

I want everyone to realise how important it is to get checked out regularly. Loads of women have abnormal cells and need treatment. The clinic is overbooked. They can't see me until half way through November.

Cervical cancer is completely curable if caught early.

Sorry to hear that Steff, I think it's very brave of you to mention it on here.
    Good luck with the treatment.

Me brave? Not at all; I'm a big coward.

    Thanks for the good luck.

    Re: One for the girls

Well done Stef for having the smear and as you say all women must go regularly. My wife goes regularly and she had a bad smear and it was cancer and she had to have a radical hysterectomy. She is fine now and will continue to be checked up but if she hadn't gone she would more than likely died as the cancer would have advanced too far. So i implore all you ladies follow Stef and my wife's lead and make sure you go to the appointment regularly as i am sure you all have family, friends and children who would miss you.

    Yikes Stef fingers crossed...

At least you got there in time...

I have always had regular smears but sometimes wonder if once every three years is often enough... < ponders >

I have had an abnormal one once, but after re-testing it transpired to be normal, phew!
