Which way does the route go when you get to Edale Cross and is it obvious?
I'd go Northern Line to Euston, pick up an intercity to Manchester, change at Piccadilly for New Mills Central, no 61 bus to Hayfield then leg it up to South Head. Oh hang on, sorry, I thought you said Charing Cross...
Try this map - http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/temples-bin/...mg&d=hc&f=trog
It's much more obvious than it used to be. There's a fairly clear trod through the grass after Edale Cross, heading down to the check-point where you cross the River Sett. Then it's a hand and knees crawl up the steep slope eventually bringing you out to the clear path heading towards South Head.
I don't know - you'd need to ask the organiser that. The question you should really be asking (yourself) is - if it's sheeting down with rain or there is thick fog and you find yourself off course in poor visibility, would that map be good enough to get you somewhere you wanted to be. That's why you should be taking a map.
I remember a couple of years ago that 1 or 2 locals were a bit surprised to find they needed a map for this race. So, they got a pen and scribbled a sketch map of the route on the back of their race numbers. For them, this constituted a map suitable to navigate the course. But as Steve says, it's for your own safety, so if you're not familiar with the area I wouldn't recommend this approach!
MORNINGTON CRESCENT!

Wear trail shoes for the race as at least half the race route is not on grass/ mud
there's some road, plenty of slabs and hardish track, and kinder is pretty grippy, but the second half has some steep grassy slopes, and boggy sections... Dilemmas! IF the race was yesterday, you might want more than just a trail shoe, but I wouldn't want to wear out my mudclaws either....
Wear trail shoes unless there's significant rain this week.....I ran around it yesterday and didnt slip once.....not even on the one grassy descent.....those slabs up burnt hill are endless
