Another One for the Ladies
I have tried searching but haven't found anything related (could be I'm not using search properly) so I hope I'm not duplicating here.
A year or so ago I had problems with cramp when training and doing races. It feels like really bad period pain and lasts about 10 minutes or so. I usually try and run through it but it isn't always possible. I went and had an ultrasound to check for cysts and other such things and was given the all clear (smears are fine too). It went away so I forgot about it but now it has come back. The pattern seems to be that it comes on within a mile or two of setting off when I'm pushing myself quite hard and often after ascending. Just ran a race and ended up dropping right to the back and wretching until it eased off. A few folk have suggested it could be due to drinking water just before running but it feels like its uterine not abdominal. Has anyone else experienced this and does anyone have any ideas what might cause it and how I could avoid it? Any help would be very much appreciated.
Re: Another One for the Ladies
Could be your bowel, not your uterus. They are in the same region and the cramping pain can be similar.

Thanks Flopsy. Not really sure what's going on. It definitely feels like the worst period pain imaginable and I've had some bad gut cramps from dysentry and the like whilst travelling which felt different but human biology is not my strong point and I did drink a load of water just before racing which may be the problem. I raced last night and felt a twinge but it wasn't too bad. I hadn't drunk any water and had not eaten for at least two hours but a friend also suggested it could have been an ovulation thing. I'll have to keep a diary and see if there's any correlation.

I think you should probably go and see your doctor for a pelvic examination. It may not be a lot of fun but it's got to be better than guessing and worrying. You may have a fibroid or some other problem that need sorting.

Thanks Tim, its probably a good idea. The time this happened before, I did go and see my doctor and she did an ultrasound which didn't show up anything untoward and then it went away so I haven't been back. I'll nip down to the surgery and get an appointment when I can. if I get any news that might help other people, I'll post it back here.

A pelvic examination is not going to rule out all the causes of pelvic pain, you would need to have a laproscopy, which requires your doctor to refer you to a gynaecologist. I really would be suprised if running bought on 'female' type problems as there are usually other symptoms and not just when exercising. Always best to get yourself checked out if you are worried though.
However, bowel type problems are commonly bought on by running. I can only assure you through experience and a specialist that bowel pain and uterine pain cannot be easily extinguished. Often what women think is uterine pain ends up being determined to be bowel pain.
The only other thing I could think of that would be aggravated by runnning would be a hernia of some sort.
