305 Users stats for % of max
What sort of percent of max do you race at? The average for my last race was 96% of max (26 mins), previous races have been between 91 & 94 (all races between 4 and 10 miles). I know this will vary on the length of the race as most people can't maintain 96% indefinately but just wondered what sort of stats other users were throwing out at races?

for racing i dont usually have the heart rate monitor on, but for general training my heart rate is usually between 75-90 % of max. I have read somewhere that racing or a good training session should be over 90% max. ocassionally when training i manage that, but i find it harder to push myself when training on own. i would imagine most races under about 10-12 miles my heart rate is over 90%, slowing slightly for longer races

i've not got much with me at work but looking at a few of my Suunto printouts, I'm in a similar range to you Ady, sprint tri 93%, 10K Road 94%, 5M Road 94% and I'm sure some of the more recent fell races have been higher than that. Having said that, I have since found out my max hr is 200/201 not the 94 that those above figures were based on. They would probably be more like 91/92%.

Mmm. Just trying to see if this is a typical value for someone pushing hard in a race. Cheers.

I wore my HRM once in a race I'd calculated that I wanted to keep my HR below 170 which is 85% of my max it went to 185 and stayed there or there abouts. i gave up wearing it as I found there were to many things that used to affect my HR like tiredness etc. I just run how I feel in training and just get involved in races. Road racing I pay attention to my split times but on the fells I just enjoy my running and pace it according to how i feel
