Omm 2012

Start location announced, the Howgills Adventure Centre, at Sedbergh School.

Not an area I know, although know the '3 Peaks' area reasonably well.

Presumably all the action will be north of there into the Howgills, rather than south and east into the Dales?

I gather the previous Howgills OMM is remembered for the weather.
It'll be my first OMM, interested to hear any tips.

Of note, Wikipedia has the geology to be different from the rest of the Dales and Lakes, "Unlike the Carboniferous Limestone Yorkshire Dales they are made of Ordovician and Silurian slates and gritstones" . Sounds more like the Gritstone I'm used to round here, but I guess it'll be wet whatever

Been over here a little bit. There could be some very steep lines. Not sure its too wet on the hills, I'd guess it drains quite well, but in the valleys etc may well be different!

Hmm. I might enter now. I hoped it might be the Howgills but did not want to enter until I knew it was no Cheviot way. Howgills are lovely with some very runnable ridges. Lots of short grass, very little rock, some very steep slopes and deep valleys. Tops are generally well drained. Seem to remember from a Capricorn a few years back some 'detail' in the far NE corner (will need to dig out an old map)

The Howgills should be pretty good for a MM. Not tussocky (in general although I'm sure we'll find some), and you can run pretty much anywhere. I'm looking foward to it now. I've been a bit equivocal about the OMM since the awful running in the Elan Valley.

Hmmmm...last day of entry 1st August! Not done one for a long, long time! Only done two mind...St. Marys Loch and one over Dumfries. I missed the next year with a broken wrist and my partner did it with another mate. Loch Trool, it was horrendous weather I believe, they jacked at half way!! I've a mate might be interested! Hmmmmm......

Entry just done. Looking forward to it. They held the RAB here a couple of years ago and I've done Sedbergh Hills a few times so that should help.
Great area of steep sided valleys and very fast runnable ridges ~ oh, and a temperance bar near Cautley Spout if the o/n camp is any where near. (I wish)

I was there a couple of months back and thought it was incredibly steep and empty, a perfect place for a mountain marathon. Now if only I can get my knees working so I can run downhill I'll be fine/

First time I've known the event location to be announced before the entry deadline - even the year that it was 'leaked' on the Dartmoor NPA site the organisers held back the official announcement.

may be the entries are down and they want to promote some interest. Howgills are good terrain though, proper fell non of that nasty rocky stuff;)

The hills are steep. What struck me whilst there was how close they are together, the valleys are deep but quite narrow. Viscious slogs up, and agony on the the quads going down...
