Dambusters flypast

Ok the cat is out of the bag

I heard about this a couple of months ago but was sworn to secrecy. Something about being shot at dawn if it was leaked....

I'll be out on Whinstone providing some safety cover with some of the Peak District Rescue Teams as they are anticipating big numbers turning up.

Any body else coming out...

BY KIND PERSMISSION OF SEVERN TRENT WATER the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and 617 Sqn are planning to carry out a flypast on Thursday 16th May over the iconic twin towers of the Derwent Reservoir, recreating history as we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Dambusters. The aircraft will pass overhead the reservoir between 1300 and 1315 (local time) – 3 passes by the RAF BBMF and 2 by the GR4’s of 617 Sqn.

GENERAL PUBLIC

There will be no events on the ground and there are no tickets being issued. The aircraft will continue to carry out a flypast at Chatsworth – at 1320 (local time) this is an excellent viewing area for the general public as there are facilities in place for parking and spectators wishing to photograph the aircraft. Standard car parking charges of £3.00 will apply - WWII veterans will be exempt from car parking charges, with kind permission from Chatsworth.

Before coming to Upper Derwent Valley, please be aware of the following:

· Parking is restricted and will be allocated on first come, first served basis..

· The road up from Fairholmes to Derwent Dam will be closed to ALL traffic on the day.

· The road from the A57 to Fairholmes may be closed if it becomes overly busy such that access to emergency vehicles etc is compromised.

· Police will enforce parking restrictions on neighbouring roads eg A57 and Bamford.

· Cancellation: the flypast is dependent on aircraft serviceability and weather conditions may be subject to cancellation.

· Congestion may significantly delay your departure from the area after the flypast.

These flypasts will form part of several events taking place across the country – culminating in a commemorative service at Lincoln Cathedral on Friday 17th May.

Me again following the original raid PM Churchil was worried that the germans would respond in kind and so the local dams were protected by a series of defenses.

There are some remains of these still on the hills but here is an early photo of the defences at langsett

It was in the paper at the weekend that even bona-fide Bomber Command veterans would not be able to drive up the valley, as it would only be open to dignitaries & essiential services

Following your tip from when we met at Cutthroat Bridge a month or so ago Ian, I'm parking on Mortimer Road and running up to WLT via Moscar, see you there!

There were also rumours that the Vulcan would be joining the flypast but, just to scotch those for anybody who's heard them, that's incorrect (checked with my missus, who's an Flight Operations Controller at Lossiemouth, home of 617...), it'll be the Lancaster from BBMF and 2 Tornado GR4 from 617 (Dambusters) Sqn, all flying out of Coningsby.

Any idea what the flight path in will be? I was trying to figure out if I could sneak out of work for an hour and see them head across?

I'm nipping down to the East Midlands tomorrow and will have a look out for the flypast too

Not entirely sure what the transit will be from/to Coningsby but around Derwent/Ladybower expect them to drop in from around Cut Gate and roll out left/right over Ashopton to go round and come in again.

I'm taking the entire day off - the forecast isn't for lovely blue sky but it's certainly not going to be bad so I'm planning on worst case and it being very busy. Going to leave Chilwell at 0930, factoring in plenty of time for the traffic heading in to the area, finding somewhere to park, faffing at the car then a 4km ish run in. After it's done going to carry on an extra 8km or so to loop round Derwent Edge and Foulstone Moor back to the car.

If you can escape that much work, you're welcome to a lift up...

No chance unfortunately - was just wondering if I could slope out for an hour or so and head somewhere to catch it en-route.

three passes of the Derwent dams then over Chatsworth house. they are expecting thousands if the weather is ok. they are quite protective of the lancaster as it's the only one in the uk that still flies. Three rescue teams will be on the hill. I'm heading up from Foulstone now

Don't the Panton brothers have plans to get 'Just Jane' airworthy?, as she's already in taxi able condition, with 4 working Merlins
I've seen her a couple of times, from very close up, whilst idling, & she's magnificent!
