Saddleworth are running the traditional Chew Valley Skyline race this year, as opposed to the O style event that we have done in recent years.
This is a one off, we'll be back to the O event next year.
13 miles, 2,000 feet of ascent over the Chew valley's rough and exposed moorland. Sunday 7th March.
Entries are limited to 250

I went round it a few weeks ago with the intention of doing the race,then realised what an awful route it is
I would be up for checking the course out as well.
Dunno....all i know is that the old race used to go directly don the steep side of Alphin but now it is impassable so its been slightly reroutedQuote:

It's good to know people are interested in doing the Chew Valley and I realise they will want to reccy the course but can we ask that people only use public access to and from the moors when going round the route. The route from Alphin to the gate at Fern Lee involves a fence crossing which can only be used on the day of the race. Please respect this as any damage to the fences could result in permission to run the race being withdrawn.

It's not impassable Tom. It's just a bit rough. There is no change to the original route planned at the moment.
We have over 100 entries now. There is an entry limit on the race so worth getting an entry in soon if you want to be sure of a place

Because of the nature of the race it is pre entry only.
We have another reccie scheduled for Sunday (14/02) if anyone not doing the other skyline reccie fancies it. Meet at Tanners mill car park 9:45 for a 10:00am start.

Lost count of the no of people out on the skyline route yesterday for what was a grand day to be out on the hills - even saw a couple of white hares.
Thank you to Turbo Tom (or should that be B. Pitt or the Messiah or the Milky bar kid) and Claire & Tim from CV for the company.
Did bump into 1 of the Saddleworth members who stated there may be access issues between Ashway stone & Chew reservoir - may have to run along the ridge rather than take the direct line over the tussocks. All will be clarified in due course I daresay.

Did run this revised route yesterday from Ashway stone, past Fox stone & then onto the reservoir just to see how the running compares as opposed to taking the path shown on the OS map. Did have to work harder in some parts (not just along this stretch) due to the snow from last week (?) & with the overnight fall, which I can't see clearing any time soon will make the race a real slog fest.
After Ashway stone there is a new check point to keep runners away from a newly reseed area of the moor. This takes you round the moor edge rather than straight over the bog. Also there could be a small change from the original route up to feather bed but that is still in discussion. This is a classic race tho' and much tougher than it looks.....I missed it last time it was run (10 years ago). Just don't know if I can do it after running the High peak......sounds suicidal.
