Stay on the valley road until the traffic light crossroads in the middle of Ilkley. Turn left up the main street. At the top turn left and immediately right and carry on straight up until the cattle grid.
Coming from Otley head straight into the centre of Ilkley and turn left at the X-roads by the Crescent hotel. Up to the end then lefta nd immediately right continuing up the hill. Over the cattle grid and the car park (if you are early enough) is on the right.
Essentially it is just below White Wells. Taking a load of juniors from Otley AC hopefully. Don't know about the map but the route is unmarked so it might be a good idea to have one, or do a recce. I might do one this Sunday if anyone is interested?
cheers, you mean middle of ilkely where crossroads are, with pub on corner and as turn left (coming from otley) its shops on either side? also do you know if map is essential
Done this last 3years - you're given a photocopied map and asked to carry it. It's a cracking race!
Egor - thats the correct place. Pub on the right is now called the Dalesway, Crescent Hotel on the left.
When is this
13th May, Junior races from 6.15, seniors 7.15

One of my favourite races. I like the fact that options are encouraged between the checkpoints though the fires of a couple of years ago have eased certain parts of the course.
Unfortunately not able to run it (or anything else for that matter) at the moment.
cheers for all info, been meaning to go for a few years and never, its only down the road as well, hopefully be there
Talked to one of my clubmates about this race last night. Apparently route choice is really important and you can loose loads of time by the wrong decisions, particularly on one of the last descents. So follow someone who has done it before or have a recce beforehand.
I panicked about route finding the first time that I did this - but shouldn't have worried.
There's a large entry and most people follow the same route. I'm sure that there are some small advantages to be gained and one place where a few people go a radically different route. Just don't start off to the right, away from the main path - didn't work for me!
Had a recce on Sunday with some depressingly fast clubmates. Generally dry and in places it was like running on a nice soft mattress. Boggy in all the usual spots like Whetstone Gate and 'the river of grass' descent from the trig point but no real problems. I did lose a shoe at one point, but that was because I hadn't tied my laces tightly (still trying to protect my 3 peaks-blackened toenails).
Should be a fun race tomorrow.
Great race this. Really enjoyed it again. The distance quoted seems to be just the joined up checkpoints ie crow flies distance. Did anyone garmin it? Out of interest.
results anyone? click there

I really enjoyed it. Only fell over once and landed in a nice soft bilberry bush. Just managed to beat the first lady home but that was mainly because she took longer routes. Total of 10 juniors turned out for Otley in our first race with a junior section, which was nice to see. I don't think they expected q uite as much uphill though!:D
This year's race is next Tuesday (12th) so don't be confused by the thread title and turn up a day late:o.
I'm off recceing it tomorrow with club-mates. anyone else planning on doing the race?
Hopin' to be there and perhaps dip under the hour. Last year I missed the last control and went back up from the finish to find it. Eerily the bloke holding the bucket was the same as at all the other checkpoints. How...?
Looks like its gonna be sunny:cool: but windy:eek: for this tomorrow night.
Are there any kit carrying requirements for this race?
Not that I can remember, but given that it's not a defined course - just a series of checkpoints then depending on the weather you might want something. If you don't know the moor then a compass may be useful - just head north and you'll drop into Wharfedale!
Well apart from taking a couple of tumbles (the second one was particularly stylish!!) and being my usual 'Swoopish*' self on the final descents from the top of the steps to the finish, and setting a personal worse of 57.26 (well I am 9 years slower than the last time I ran it:eek:) that was great fun!!
Thanks to the organisers & marshalls etc.
Did you make it MR or GD?
* Sorry Colin!!!
On hols abroad! what was weather like and any results!?
Brill. well run mt. And I'm glad it was sunny!
Stunning evening up on Ilkley Moor. Graham Pearce won I think. Nice to see Big Compass, AJF, Bob and various other friends :)
I could get used to being injured. The beer tastes just as good and you don't get covered in mud ;)
Yep a pearce won in 41 summat I think?
Good to see you too DT. Being injured is fun! Loads of beer and time to play around on bikes. Problem I have found is trying to run again afterwards. Foot in a bucket of ice at the moment. :(
Was nice to be on the fells again though. Only been on the fells this year 4 times and they have all been races.
A lovely evening's run. Somehow managed to pass Brett and Antisocial without ever seeing them:rolleyes: Not my fastest time but nowhere near my slowest, still haven't got my race legs yet.
Thanks to the marshals and gate holders.
My mistake was to follow an Ilkley Harrier - obviously a new member :D
A fabulous evening and great race!
Nice to see you Derby, hope the leg gets better soon, just in time for Beamsley, then you can run and drink after and not worry about driving home, nice to have a race on your doorstep.
A one of the trustees of the Jack Bloor Fund, can I say a big thank you to all the competitors for turning out and giving us what I believe was another record field.
A big thanks also to all the helpers at the start and finish and the checkpoint marshals.
It was a beautiful evening (even if I had to rush home to recover the ladies trophy that was delivered to me back in Feb and which I had put in a safe place (one I couldn't remember until after 10 minutes or so of searching:eek:)
A great finish to the ladies race with Lizzie Adams just edging out Jo Waites by a few yards.
And, perhaps missed by quite a few of you, an emotional moment when, before the junior races prize-giving, the King family of Ilkley presented a cheque to Jack's widow Pat, one of my co-trustees, for a 4 figure sum. The money was part of the Gemma King Fund that the King family have worked so hard to raise after the death of Gemma in an accident on holiday abroad a couple of years ago.
With the profits from the race and this donation, the Fund will be able to help even more young people in pursuing outdoor activities that they otherwise might not be able to afford.
Well done the organisers and volunteers. The Jack Bloor is a really pertinent cause for fell runners.
A splendid evening, but one or two quibbles: the Sun, it shone in my eyes all the way to the Swastika Stone; the traffic, I made my way to Ilkley via Harewood and got stuck in the Leeds-Harrogate log jam which meant I didn't get any discs (throwing them in the buckets is really satisfying); the gate latch that had to be brayed open with a rock (I blame valuable seconds lost on this incident); trying to be clever at the last control and getting enmeshed in a choss quarry whilst people I'd passed earlier romped along the near skyline laughing at me (or so I imagined); not dipping under the hour again:mad: falling on my face again (aching all over today:()
Otherwise another bludey brilliant evening on the moor. The JB may be my favourite race.
And next year I'll beat the hour. So help me!
Thanks GD, glad you had a good evening.
The section from the ruined building (check 4) to the finish is one of the all time great run ins in fell running for me. So much possible route choice. I never ever take quite the same route year on year. :D
Best of luck getting the time down, but you may need some help on the fastest lines. (What were you doing in a/the quarry?!)

Somehow my time seems a lot slower than I remembered - did they start the clock early?
Are there any pictures from this anywhere?
I spotted this lass just in front disappear round a knoll with the control in view. I thought she had a secret shortcut so took a chance. As soon as I came round the knoll I realised my mistake as I was floundering over heather covered boulders so had to slow right down. Stangely enough there was no sign of the lass. Are there, perchance, legends of the moor which tell of maidens who lure runners to certain death (or in my case losing a few seconds off their time)?
I mapped it on mapmyrun - although the elevation is a bit out I think.

And what's the consensus on achieving the Trig Point control? It was really frustrating seeing people on the skyline lope effortlessly towards the trig on what must be a tarmac path :(whilst the rest of us were stumbling through the heather having taken the lower route from Cowper's Cross.
And, same question as last year, did anyone garmin the course?
You got yours in first.:o
