Anyone doing Shelf Moor on Sunday?

I don't know about gentle, that's definitely a brain off descent down Lightside!
I have just been ordered to go by my wife, how cool is that? :D
club championship for our club,so we will have a good turn out,a tough race so i am told.
Shelf Moor is the scene of my worst ever fell race! In fact all of my worst races happen around there!
See you there then, Dom :D 4th??
4th from last!
ps, Don't let me put anyone off. It's a really good well organised race!
Gentle*r*, not gentle :D I seem to remember it was runnable even for a klutz like me though.
Some good groughs to jump over at the top as well. Think I was next to last in 2006; doubt I'll improve on that but I'm still looking forward to it.
Great race,I really enjoyed it, it really is a superb course.
Thanks to the organisors and especially you poor marshalls on the top getting rather wet in that 'fine rain that really soaks you'!!
I'll second that. It wasn't too good on the tops. Nice bit of mist though to thwart those rivals. Now you see me and now you don't. On the descent, I thought there was not a soul behind me! As usual, a couple whizzed by. How do they do that? Thanks again to all concerned. First race since Blackamoor and thoroughly enjoyed it. One or two blooded knees. Someone else, not me. Too careful?
Great race today - thanks to all the marshalls for braving the conditions on top of James Thorn and Higher Shelf!!!!
Will attach a google earth route of the race for anyone interested .... well that is if I can work out how to upload an invalid .kml file type ??
Brett help??
Making me very jealous. Used to Love running the Shelf Moor race - for me about 58 mins of torture but very very satisfying. Makes me think of home - ran up there countless times in all kinds of weather. Trust me, its better to be ascending James Thorn in cool wet weather.
In my view one of the purest fell running routes there is locally. Any results / pictures due out soon? How many ran?
From a current Glossopdale Harrier stationed out in the USA - keep up the good work folks. I know the marshalling and organisation would have been first class
Forgot about this little treat of a race, but lying in bed all morning doesn't help.
Would have popped up and watched as I did my 2 hour run.
Well done to all who ran.
Thanks Brett - results are up

Excellent race - shame about getting lost in the mist!!
Nick Bassett & myself were in 4th and 5th place as we got to James's Thorn, then we must have missed one of the flags heading off to the right and we just kept going straight on. By the time we realised there were no flags & no other runners we were way off course. Got my map & compass out, took a bearing and we eventually rejoined the pack somewhere around 25th place, I think. Oops!
Still, I think it was the first time I've beaten Nick, so perhaps I'll try it again sometime (or maybe not).
Good to meet Brett at long last.
Excellent prizes, by the way - chocolates, hand-made in Glossop - yummy.
Big thanks to the marshalls (including Werdna Swilnik) for standing out in the mist and rain while we all enjoyed ourselves.
Yes, many thanks to the marshalls, very grisley weather on top (perfect fell running weather I reckon). I've done the race before and didn't even recognise the trig point.
I had just come back from 9 days walking the Cleveland Way during which time there was lots of good weather, and I didn't see a spot of rain, so it was a wierd thing to be stood up there at the top of Dowstones clough in the cold driving rain. I could see runners appear out of the mist on the bank opposite me, anxiously scanning for the next flag as they approached the clough. Quite a few commented that they were thankful for the course being well flagged. The first two Dark Peak runners were neck and neck at Dowstones, so it must have been quite a finish!
The marshalls were well in front of the trig, as were the tapes directing the runners. In previous years we have had to run round the back of the trig, which involves scrambling over rocks in addition to the extra distance. Not complaining though, a few seconds less to suffer!
Could anyone give me the route for this race, I live in Old Glossop and fancy having a go at this but wouldnt mind a few runs round first :)

Freddie
I had a house on Highstones Gardens ( top of hope street) and as a member of Glossopdale and local to the route I know it well. Start is at the first gate on mossy lea. Follow path towards farm, over bridge then left up the hill. Just after gate at the top drop down on the path into the clough and contour for about 1/2 mile. Then at the bottom of James Thorn you turn left and its up up up until you hit the style. Then its over the style and on to the James Thorn summit. carry on then bare right to lower shelf then over the top and head towards higher shelf trig. Basically you go around the trig and back on your self almost then its fast running for about 2 miles in an old stream bed for starters. The route here is ok but in the clag it cant be difficult ( consult the map on Glossopdale site). Eventually you will come out on the top of lightside where its a brakes off / brain off descent to the styles ( 3 in total) to the mossy lea gate where you started from. Then its down towards Old Glossop and finish at the bus turning circle by the factory.
Great route and a killer of a climb. glossopdale always put on a great job. Incidentally the record is under 40 mins by Colin Donelly in the 80's. No one has got near it since.
Wish I could be there to take you around
Worth noting that the race route is fully marked with nice little flags - but I still managed to go completely wrong at the top of James's Thorn last year! Just kept going instead of bearing right (thick mist - couldn't see the next flag!) Eventually I took a compass bearing and got back to the race route, joining in the pack about 20 places down from where I had been.
Think I'll be a bit more careful this year.
Freddie you should get out with the harriers one night I'd be happy to have a trot around the course anytime soon and I'm sure some of the others would too. It shoud be bye bye to the roads before long - IT'S SPRING!!!
Sort of:o !
Freddie, you will also be very welcome at another local Glossop race, the Herod Farm race, which is a short race (but with two steep climbs) that takes place on the evening of Wednesday 16th April. Details are here:

I will do and look forward to it, just a small matter of the London Marathon first !!
I had a shock when I saw the thread title - I thought "it can't be a year since already!!".
A great race this, very heavy climb on the outward section but one of my favourite descents back.
+1 for the Herod Farm race, well worth doing. I can't wait for midweek fellracing to return, I flipping hate the winters these days.
Just a small plug for the Shelf Moor Fell Race organized by the Glossopdale Harriers which is coming up soon.
Sunday 6th Sept.
Main Race: SHELF MOOR (R). AS. 11.00 a.m. 5.9m/1500' from Scout Hut, Old Glossop, (GR SK042949). £4. Teams free. Over 16.
The prizes are still to be finialized but will definitely include ale sourced from IanDarkPeak.
Also this year there will be a junior race. Note the details are slightly different from the those advertised in the FRA handbook, the junior race will now be, 1.6m/365', starting soon after senior race. I have shortened the Junior race from advertised to avoid any potential overlap with the Senior race. The Junior race will be a basic out and back race starting from the finish point of the Senior race. The start section is fairly level, but this will be followed by a tough short climb up the initial portion of Lightside (this is the final descent in the Senior race).
Second to Last
I am going to enter this for my 1st fell race,Do i need to know anything in particluar ? i want to do the senior race
Top race this, it was one of my first.
Nothing I can think of Andy, no navigation worries the top is marked with flags (or it was previously) - other than don't worry if it seems too fast at the start, they're only taking the mickey on the flat.
Once you're desceding get the brakes off its a brilliant descent to the finish.
Looking forward to this one, down as one of our club counters too, so hopefully a few Helsby runners will be there
The section from the trig to Dowstone Clough is easy to mess up in the clag.
I went wrong a couple of years ago on the section from James' Thorn to the trig - and it was fully flagged! The mist was that thick you couldn't see from 1 flag to the next!
I'm doing Peris the day before, so I might not be able walk let alone run by the Sunday. Perhaps I'll go along and watch.
By the way, this is due to be an English champs race next year - and it certainly deserves it.
Oh yes, the prizes were fantastic last year. As well as the beer, the winners each received a chocolate fell shoe (size 11, I think), made at a local chocolatiers in Glossop.
