Here you are daz
Awww... flippin 'eck Richard, was hoping to keep Daz sweating for a while.. might even have extracted a pint or two in return for the non-secret info'....
If you have Wainwright's "Outlying Fells of Lakeland" he covers the route in reverse as a circular walk on the Dunnerdale Fells. For the millenium, the race was run that way round.
I've done that lovely Wainwright wander on a number of occasions, great for young kids (of all ages) as an introduction of bigger stuff to come.... highly recommended as is that particular AW mini tome... when my lads were wee nippers we used to plan quite a few adventures around the Lakes... using said book.
Only a couple of days to go, now, for this one. Hope my foot holds out - it'll be my first proper run since the relays. 46 mins last year - probably nearer 56 mins this year.
Is the Yorkshire Thug going to be there this year? I seem to remember seeing you there last year.
Bonfire & fireworks in the Duddon Valley afterwards - should be a good weekend. (Not forgetting beer in the Blacksmiths).
....followed by Ben Abledoor......Jon Deegan.
Sharon Taylor won the Ladies.
just returned from the race
a fantastic course and my first time to that part of the lakes
a bit of trouble driving to the start this morning and i may have treated luvshack to his first how to rally a ford transit in reverse to get over the fell road.
a big thanks to the pennine support on the fell as well:)
Great course, sociable atmosphere, wonderful weather and a tasty pie.. what more could one ask for in a fell race. Not surprised it's such a popular race. Thanks to the organisers, marshalls and everyone else who helped out.
Think I took a poor line off checkpoint 3 (Stickle Pike). I doubled back as it shows on the route map but I'm sure there must have been a quicker way down. Must reccie before next years race.
Results are up on the Blackcoombe website. What happened to Jackie Lee? Did she walk round?
I think she had a bad fall on some rocks.
Westmorland Gazette write-up
everyone sometimes has a bad day or decides to prob just have a plod round
.......I don't think so. Are you new to competitive fell running.
I did pretty much the same. DazH & the rather lovely Jane Reedy (I think I've got that the right way round) were just ahead of me as we approached Stickle Pike, but they'd disappeared into the sunset by the time I hit the path (and I'm not a particularly slow descender). I also failed to get the right line between 3 & 4 and ended up shin-deep in that bog. I wouldn't mind, but that's the 3rd year in succession I've made the same mistakes!
so you have never had a bad day
I saw Jackie run up the first hill. She was going fine. There must have been a reason for her finishing position I thought. I can't imagine that she faded badly if thats what you mean by having a bad day. I can't imagine her just plodding round and taking it easy as you can. I was thinking she may have picked up an injury for example. I was paying her a compliment in expecting hewr to have finished higher up than she did.
yeah thats fair enough, there obviously was a reason but your saying that you think no one ever goes to the odd race and takes it steady once in a while, i think ive done 300odd races in my time and prob done this half a dozen times, mostly whilst coming back from injury .
how can you imagine what and how people approach each race ???
i always try and run flat out each time at all races i do but experience has taught me when coming back from injury just to hang back a little, okay i prob shouldnt have said plod round, thats my fault.
i just found it a bit weird when you commented , did she walk round, why not just say did she get injured or something
it just sounded a bit harsh
i probably took your post wrong , if you was paying her a compliment then fair enough.
how can you imagine what and how people approach each race ???
No, I couldn't, so I was asking for some help.
Same experience, just another part of the field, Wendy Dodds wasn't far ahead as I began the climb up Stickle Pike but I didn't see her again till the finish. She must have taken a different line off the top.
Yep, Billy had reccied the weekend before.
I'm pretty confused as well Daz........ (my normal state as you know)..
Fairly certain Jackie said she just felt really rubbish (bug etc)...
I just was rubbish...
Have to say, of Dunnerdale, as ever one of the real Gems of fell racing..
Superb course, brilliant organisation, great melee in the village hall...
Excellent post race grub, lots of smiling faces..
Rounded of neatly by very tasty refreshments in the Blacksmiths....
And even the "bad" company was sublime...
All that and.... pre-race high speed white van reversing Up & Over the fell road from Seathwaite... guaranteed to put you in racing mode!!!
MANY THANKS TO THOSE WHO MAKE SUCH A SPECIAL EVENT HAPPEN
AND TO THOSE WHO TOLERATE THE DAYS INVASION
From today's Westmorland Gazette:
'One of the favourites for the ladies' race and winner of many Lake District fell races this year, Eryri's Jacki Lee took a nasty fall and had to walk a fair portion of the course, covered in blood, to finish 186th place overall in 67-30.'
High winds, icy temperatures, snow on the fells, thundering streams, a race in the Lake District, what could possibly go wrong? Just hope there's no one hovering around in a helicopter ready to declare an emergency should someone fall knee deep in a bog.
Good luck to everyone taking part in this classic little race, and we trust it will make no more news than squeezing into the sports pages of the Wezzie Gazzette.
i cant make this one now as ive a cold:(
loooooverly race mind
What a fantastic race! Loved almost every minute of it. Brilliant route. Clear, dry, bright, light winds.
Not a bit like last weekend, just lacked a bit of the excitement.:D
Good race today.
Rob Hope won, from Ricky Lightfoot, Tom Addison, Ben Abdelnoor, John Atkinson and Mark Addison. Ambleside sneaked the team prize ahead of Helm Hill.
Nat White was first lady, with Jane Reedy second.
nice write up actually,
