Anyone doing this classic ?
I'll be there. My first attempt, expecting to take ~2h.
A little. I'm new to fell running and as I live in York those NYM races are the easiest for me to get to.
What do you want to know?
Did a recce over 3/4 of the course last weekend, the going is mostly firm. The scenary is classic north yorkshire moors, with the added bonus of a sea view just before the final descent.
The race takes in three of the area's classic landmarks, High Cliff Nab, Captain Cooks Monument and Roseberry topping
Its my first time in the race, though live locally so know the terrain.
Should be a good one.
Apologies for being the Forum anorak but although the town is spelt Guisborough the moors (and race) are spelt Gisborough.
Although not running this year (25m of Allendale the day before) I ran round it last Friday and can confirm the going underfoot is very very dry an amazing change around from last year when it was mud and swamp from almost start to finish.
Have a good one !
Yeah good run. Used to live in the area. Think you' ll like it guys. Mind you everything the legendary Dave Parry organises is great
[quote=Bob the Dog;26674]Apologies for being the Forum anorak but although the town is spelt Guisborough the moors (and race) are spelt Gisborough.
The reason for the difference in spelling is that the original ancient spelling is indeed Gisborough, in fact Gisborough Hall Hotel still uses this spelling. It appears that the Town spelling has changed over the years to it's current form.
I have ran the Moors race route, or various parts of it, several times over the past couple of weeks and can confirm that its getting dryer (and harder) by the day, whereas last year we even had a 'white out' crossing the moor from Sleddale Farm to Percy Rigg.
Hope everyone has an enjoyable run and looks like the weather is going to hold.
Shoe choice ??
Definitely trail shoes. Very hard underfoot.
If it's very hard and dry, might road shoes be better?
i am doing it with the wife, her first proper fell race!
we are looking forward to it, as i have done a few of davids race this winter, very well organised.
i planning to wear my walsh pbs n shes got a pair of montrail ladies fell shoes
I am going to have a look see in the morning ,paticularly at the first climb .
Think it will be my Mountain bear fell shoes.
I have glass ankles and anything with height in the heels wories me .
Yes anything with abit of padding would be to the good, but there are a few tricky sections which might turn an ankle or two so no high heels.
Ankles and feet were sore after the recce. The descents of little roseberry and roseberry are softish being fern mulch.
just had a walk up first climb through woods, looks like it is road racing shoes for me,everywhere is dry as a bone.
What a scorcer ,Hell that was hard
Last year we had a snow shower and strong northerly winds! What a contrast yesterday. I've never seen so many runners start to walk the last uphill on the moor up to Highcliff gate. Apparently even some of the top runners were walking. Anyway a great turnout.
Hard, very hard. The sun was relentless and there was very little breeze. Seemed to really hit me on Great Ayton Moor and thereafter. Never been so dehydrated and suffered for it later on.
Did anyone else get lost in the woods on the return leg? The main path through woods (Cleveland Way) forked and it looked very much to me like the red and white tape was indicating the downhill (left) turn rather than straight on. And, in fact, looking at the map now the left path does seem to be the right one. I must just have made a wrong turn in the final wooded section. Only cost me about 10mins tho.
Wore my trail shoes in the end, good choice too. As some have said, some of the ascents/descents needed the extra grip.
Right what's next, Hamsterley Forest?
Wore my "Road Racing "shoes in the end .Very fast and dry start ,first time i have run all the way up the first wooded climb, it is usualy wet through ,you end up slipping all over and resorting to walking .
Having said that i have never walked up the last climb onto high cliff but everything had tied up and to Maggie Thatchers qoute "ther was no alternative".
I had an idea i was on for my target time at high cliff so i coulndnt let up , even though the finish is downhill i had to dig realy deep and was totaly shot at the finish.
Tee hee hee! wish I'd bin there. I reckon with my local knowledge I'd 'ave wupped some of you yung 'uns ;)
why wernt you?

Walshes or Wave Harriers? I'm guessing the former, given recent weather, but would appreciate any local advice.
Same thoughts as me, i'd normally wear my Inov8 trail shoes for this one but.........probably wearing Walshes after todays rain.
I will take both and decide on the day.
There's a mile or two on road & tracks but it gets very muddy and slippy in the woods where its quite steep, and if it continues raining tomorrow it could be fun on the open moor:eek:
Hi could anyone tell me if this is entry on the day? Can anyone enter? And is there a time limit? Thanks.
Whay Hey...........Av just become a senior.:)
Karlos, whats your preferred footwear for this one mate??
Hi MG, i'm hoping there are entries on day else i'm goosed!!
I've always entered on the day and its never been a problem before, although i read every year it is advisable to pre enter.
The organiser is a good bloke and i don't think he would turn anyone away.
No time limit that i know of either.
NB
Cheers for that NB. I can't find any entry instructions on the web so presuming it's entry on day. I hope no time restrictions as I'll be alot slower than you lot. Not been running long so not got the grasp of speed yet! I fancy doing it though as it's not far from where I live.
MG Its a good route with 3 stiff climbs but the rest is fairly runnable.
Be plenty of folk there of mixed ability, i've just printed the map from NYM website but know the route quite well and probably wont use it, there's loads of people to follow and the section in the woods is usually taped.
Hi yeah have had a look at the map and I think I have actually walked that route or similar before and yeah there will be loadsa people in front of me!
Looking forward to it now. Hope the weather picks up tho...hate rain! We need a bit of sunshine for a change. I remember this time last year I got sunburn!
I thought that runners could go any way through the woods? Not that I'm complaining, as the whole area will be new to me and I'll probably get lost in any case...
Hmmm, just seen Sunday's forecast - heavy rain. You mightn't get a suntan MG, but that weather-beaten look can fool people from a distance.
Yeah streaky mud tan!
Doubly good for the complexion.
