In a sport like fell running I don't think young blood is as significant as other sports. Of course it should be encouraged and aided but fell running must be one of the most common choices as a second sporting career; after years climbing, biking, road running, or the team sports.

A whole load of thanks to whoever found my car key and handed it in at the event centre.

It was a very nice surprise to have it found, even if it didnt excuse my idiotic lack of care in losing it in the first place. Yet another senior moment I'm afraid :(

There are and always will be those clubs that try to grow their own talent and others that neglect junior running. It happens across the board, not just in fell running terms.

But those without any junior development will probably experience more peaks and troughs and are perhaps at greater risk of disappearing.

One of the problems that many strong junior clubs have is maintaining an active seniors for the juniors to move in to - that's why so many clubs out there pick up adult new recruits - they get to 16 / 17 and find there's no team for them.

Yes Don key Borrowdale have done really well this season, well done, I wish we had big hills to practice on.

Congrats on 2nd place in the Lakeland Classics though. a fine achivement:wink:

I'd just like to thank all the organisers and everyone who helped put on sundays fell relays, especially the marshalls on top of the hills - I was absolutely freezing in the holding pen waitiong for leg 4 to get underway, so it must have been absolutely evil for those spending hours on top of East Lomond and the other hills. The relays are always one of the highklights of the year for the fell runners at our club, so it was well worth the long haul up from Essex for the weekend. Everyone from our club enjoyed the event even though we were never likely to trouble the leaderboard. We have to apologise if we scared off any of the locals - we were staying in Dunfermline, and most of the pubs we visited, emptied pretty quickly after our arrival, and we were described as a "sinister bunch" by one of the few people who didn't run for cover. It was also nice to see after watching the Dunfermline-Ross County match on saturday, that England doesn't have a complete monopoly on dodgy goalkeepers yet. Thanks again for a brilliant weekend.

He's probably referring to Mike asking Chris (who lives at Penrith) if he wanted to meet up for a run!

(I'm no expert on the topic) but I've not known of borrowdale poaching anyone from any club, they dont need to!!. But with comments like Scott's, he may not be quite so keen to help wharfedale out next time they are stuck.

Hi Scott, Mike Fanning here.

I know that Chris Newman moved to the Penrith area, I know that he works funny shifts, and as I work odd hours, and having seen him running on Blencathra one day, I asked if ever he fancied a run out to let me know. I have been running with any number of runners from other clubs, supported many runners from other clubs on Bob Graham attempts and the like, I have shown any number of people round lakeland fell races, and not with the intention of "poaching" them to join Borrowdale. I even helped your club on its Billy Bland challenge because there weren't enough people to make up the numbers, and the one runner who would have had to do a leg on their own was worried about that. I think it was Chris Newman who asked me to help.

I think you are way out of order, but easy answer, eh? No help for anyone from now on, no words of encouragement for the many talented runners that I try to support and encourage, and so far as you and your club are concerned, if in fact you speak for Wharfedale at all, lesson learned: sod you, and sod your club.

That is one of the most ball bouncingly humorous comments I have ever read on this 'ere forum.

Wharfedale has its very own poach-meister - David Hird. I would imagine every fellrunner has been approached over the past 15 years to join your hallowed club.

Of course it's more usual these days for Pennine to go poaching Borrowdale's youngsters!!!
