Yes! To me looking at a chart in kg is like tryig to read a page written in a foreign language I don't speak at all. Rather an uncomfortable feeling. As if my mind was a Garmin engaged in a continuing but unsuccessful search for satellites. It flattens my batteries.
When I started last July, I was determined not to crash diet and neither did I want to start running again after an eighteen year break being so heavy (injury risks). So, I set myself a target weight of 91kg before I would allow myself to go out running, which meant I had to take more care of my diet. I still eat the same stuff basically, though definitely less refined sugar (chocolates, sweets etc.) and allow only 2-3 alcoholic drinks per week. I'll eat crisps occasionally, cakes rarely, though I do snack on peanuts because of the fibre and long lasting energy they provide.
I did start running at 91kg and initially there was a dramatic drop down to 86kg, since then much slower because obviously, there's less to lose, but when I persist with the combination of the running and watching what I eat, my body tends to drop weight after a couple of weeks, then settle again at the lower weight, before repeating the cycle. It can be disheartening during that fortnight but over the months I've got used to it. At 83kg now, I've had to replace all my chinos :thumbup: and I am waiting to change my suits when I reach my target.
My advice to you would be to look ahead, maybe 3 months and see what you have achieved, if you have the odd bad day, don't beat yourself up about it and try and eat much less the following day, it doesn't work, you just feel more crap and eat more. Just chalk it up to experience and move on, just don't let 2 days be bad too close together!!

I'm looking at the long game too; I do have the odd 'cheat' day, but the weight is coming off and the running's getting easier, so it's all good at the moment.
If people are dropping out due to the units I think it's about time we changed to stones and pounds. What say you Pat?

Hi All,
I'm a new (over)heavyweight to the forum. ‘DrPat’ suggested I get on board. I've been running for the last five years and all that time I've been overweight. I was slightly getting away with it because of a reasonable level of fitness. That changed last November when I had keyhole surgery on the knee to clean up the first touches of arthritis and a slight tear in the cartilage.
They surgeon and Physio both told me I’m perfectly okay to return to running which I’ve did in the last two weeks,
But I have a chilling reminder in my ear from the Physio. “Every Kilo on the body is an extra five 5Kgs on the knee” :o
So I’m looking for help / guidance on getting 50Kg less on my knee :D

PS Had both knees done and now I cycle more than run but still enjoy both.

Never wiser words were spoken. Now I just need then translated into a format the old head will believe and more importantly the belly to understand why it's been starved to death :confused:..
Hard to know how you have remained so overweight with the amount of running you have been doing. To be brutally honest it has not been that difficult to get rid of the 10 Kg I succeeded with. And starting from a heavier weight it should be easier. It is getting difficult for me now as that racing weight calculator earlier in the thread says I should be about 10.5 stone. Well I am just above 11.
Do you each much sugary stuff if so stop. I try to not eat after the main evening meal. Try to keep busy in the evening, keeps the mind off food. If desperate have an apple or a raw carrot. I try to have a salad for Saturday lunch I just pile the plate up with lettuce peppers mushrooms etc. I eat very little bread these days.

It is appalling how much calories there is in something such as a biscuit or a pack of crisps.
One can eat just as much but eat more cleverly and loose weight.
Not as difficult as it may appear.
I need to have a negative balance of 4000 cals a week to lose 1lb
I work on 2000 a day for a normal week.
Then any exercise I do is taken off. I use the Garmin stats for the calories during exercise.
I just need to get my mind focused on dropping a pound or two but I enjoy the good life and a beer.

I started off with Slimmingworld, but due to various reasons (not least of which was the meetings clashing with our social runs!) I swapped over to the Herbalife programme. Some will no doubt criticise it, all I can say is that it works for me. It's not just about losing weight it's about healthy eating, changing body composition from fat to lean muscle, that kind of thing. Weekly consultations and lots of good advice and information.

Well I weighed in last Thursday at the gym, 2 weeks after my last time & I've lost 3kg :thumbup:. My orginal weight was 76kg not 70 & now it's 73. Still a long way to go sadly to my goal weight & that loss is without running due to injury but lots of cycling
Well done, Betty. How long before you're running again? Frustrating, isn't it? I did my hamstring last year and lost quite a lot of fitness due to it (and put some weight on!) so finding an alternative was a good idea - wish I'd done that!
That is excellent advice. While building up your running again it will be difficult to burn significant calories while running. Use the bike instead, go for a hard blast for 1/2 hour in one direction and then come back again,if possible faster. That one hour is worth 700 to 800 calories then go for your gentle 1/2 run. Do that three times during the working week plus whatever you do on the weekend. With that and a bit of thought about what you eat will easily get to 4000 cals.

this sums up how I feel too Stagger.
I'm struggling a bit at the moment, feeling hungry a lot after the Excalibur Marathon at the weekend but picked up an achilles niggle and supposedly off running for a couple of weeks. Plan to get out on the mountain bike this week tho and we're moving house which should burn a fair few calories!:D
I was looking at Pat's link to how much different types of exercise burn calories. At the weekend I rode 10 miles at a brisk pace to our club handicap ran 10 miles round Lyme Park at a good pace and then rode 10 miles back at a brisk pace. The following day I ran 15-16 miles round the Kinder Trog slowly. I must have burned a couple of days calories at least and I've felt starving all week - even though I've had a couple of rest days since!
My point is if you do a lot of running/cycling unless you just drink pints and eat takeaways you're bound to lose weight. I've lost tons of weight since I started running and I haven't really watched what I've eaten, I've just ran a lot. Maybe being in my twenties (just) helps too.
I'm now down to the point where I need to lose about a stone/stone and a half to become competitive. It's really hard, but weekends like the last one and races like Edale Skyline are really helping.
I rarely weigh myself either I've decided I'll only weigh myself regularly when I can see a six pack clearly - then I'll know my body fat is very low and I should be near my racing weight. There's no point being a slave to the scales until then. It's taken me two years to lose almost three stone and I reckon it'll take another year to lose the rest, but I know it'll stay off when I do and I'll be a lot faster!
Weighed in this morning at 85Kg which is down one. Since I'm only started watching my food intake this week I pure delighted with that start.
A big seven days coming up to keep at the three meals / no trash diet.
A snack of a fistful of raisins / sultanas are not too bad I suppose?
Very high carb, and unless they are expensive organic ones they'll be covered in vegetable oil. Instead of 3 meals no trash you might want to insider 6 smaller meals throughout the day and allow yourself to have one cheat meal/day a week. If you don't you'll give it up pretty quick.
I got a tray of baby carrots at lunchtime instead. Not bad indeed.
Pretty much echoes my sentiments.
Have spent 18 years with a hectic demanding job getting to a permanent place of work, getting married, raising 3 kids (so far so good). It hasn't quite taken me that long to lose 2 stone (about 9 months), but it'll be staying off for sure. I promised myself I would never let it slip again!!

It has an " non-active man" of my height at 70.3Kg. Considering I'm 86/85Kg I have a way to go. My target is 75 which I shall leave for the time being.
I'll set a long term goals of :
[1] <70Kg
[2] Top Half of the field for the Wednesday night IMRA Leinster League races in around Dublin & Wicklow mountains.
[3] A 3' 45" marathon (current PB 3' 56" when I was 86Kg on the start line.)
Not many updates came in this week what has happened to everybody? I think I will ease off a bit now I was actually slightly under my 70 kg target yesterday morning, albeit after an easy 5 mile run the previous evening. The calculation by SilentRunner suggests 10 1/2 stone for a person of my height whatever that is in kg (67 Kg ish i suppose). But I have no real drive to get that low. If I slowly loose weight over a long period of time - good. There are guys on the Thursday night club runs who are considerably heavier that me but would blow me away on a run, so weight is not everything.
