I got the results sheet emailed to me today as well. Winner was really going some wasn't he? I heard the result on the day but thought I'd misheard. Average of just over 7min/miling in that sort of terrain/weather is nothing short of amazing.
Cheers Paul. Some very impressive Ilkley results !
I can't believe people ran round that course in less than three hours - amazing!
Did people get a certificate at the end, or did I dream that bit, about all finishers getting a certificate? Not that it matters, but all I could see at the finish was a scout selling mugs and lots of steaming muddy shoes and sweaty bodies. I didn't see any pie and peas...
something else to look out for next year, when I'll definitely be doing it again. And trying to finish in under 5 hours...
Plodding Bear, there were certificates and a mini LED torch/key ring for everyone. Plus pie, peas, potatoes, gravy, tea, rice pudding, and peaches.
Hallucination is common on long events; perhaps you imagined the scout.
Missed out on that lot, then! Hey Ho!
There are some amazing times being mentioned here. A sub-4 finish is already impressive but sub-3 is unimaginable. The winning time leaves me open-mouthed in incredulity with "How?" rattling around the brain cell.
I really like this event. It's one of the many I use to test myself (in this case every year since 2000). As I was feeling strong in the week leading up to it I was fondly imagining a first sub-4 finish for the new route. It was not to be. 4:19 turned out to be a new-route personal worst instead. I managed to avoid all the bogs and only sank a couple of inches at most, but the constant hopping and dancing from side to side while trying to sustain forward momentum across the moors into a headwind tends to take it out of you. The up side was being able to keep up a relatively strong pace to the finish and overtake quite a few later on. The one exception was Socks, who came steaming past me on the final descent to the finish. Well done Socks!
In Menston a couple of runners in front of me overshot the left turn just past Fairfax Gardens. I called them back then overtook another runner who had been reduced to a walk and had to step aside to let me overtake. He didn't look too clever. I hope you're OK, whoever you are.
It may have been swilling underfoot but at least it wasn't pouring from above. We got off lightly. Conditions further west were far worse all day. I soon hit the deluge again on the drive home.
It was good chatting to the Fellponies (Tussockface and SteveS) beforehand, although the colour clash did make my eyes ache. ;)
Here's to 2012 and another sub-4 attempt. It will need to be frozen.
Good post BritNick, especially if you reckon sub 4 is impressive (I'll take that :) )
If you would like further impressiveness then who came in at 4:01 to win the Vets prize but my clubmate Kevin Watson at 67years old!
Rob ! You've changed your name !!
I reckon a frozen course would hurt your feet after a while. Running on frozen churned up mud is worse than bog trotting. And those shin scraping icy puddles that give way underneath you..!
ALex, I am so far from being a race horse you can't even imagine!!!
Rob, your vet team mate's winning time is simply awesome. I'd like to think I could manage that performance when I'm that age but somehow I doubt it. If I can't manage it at 47, after 15 years at it, then the chances seem rather low. (That sounded a bit suspect; you know what I mean!)
pb, Alexandra, I manage pretty well on the frozen stuff. I glide over it without any problem and make much more efficient progress than when bog-dodging. Of course I would never try to race over it, but I haven't got the energy to race over the bogs anyway, so the net effect is more speed without injury over the frozen lumps.
I've just posted a report with fewer pictures that I would have liked here.
Cheers Chris. Good time yourself, 3.37 ! I think mine was a one off, never to be repeated feat. Not entered Blubberhouses as yet. Down for The 4 Lakeland Passes, Trollers Trot, Wharfedale Off Road Marathon & 3 P's thus far. How about yourself ?
Agreed that the winning time was absolutely incredible, especially in the conditions. To be honest many of the fast times deserve absolute respect in the given conditions. Then again I think everyone who finishes deserves respect :)
Not sure about frozen ground causing shin splints, aren't shin splints more of a result of things like increased mileage too soon and poor rest? Frozen ground is more ankle twisting in my experience but the guy I was running with said last year the ground was frozen and it was easier and quicker. Two years ago I'm told it was deep snow and really beautiful up there!!
Thanks. Good photo's Britnick! Two questions though:
1- looking at the photo's of 2009 are you one of these insane men that wear really short shorts even in minus - it's a bloody freezing!! :w00t: And why are standing on snow in bare feet? I think you may be a bit more robust than me!! :D
2- where's the piccies of the all bog this year? How can we ever remind ourselves of just how boggy it really was without photographic evidence....even the the muddy bog stains on my feet will disappear with time ;)
Legs don't feel the cold unless it's wet or windy. I was wearing two pairs so the important bits were warm enough. Truth be told, bare legs feel warmer than Lycra-clad legs.
As for the lack of bog piccies, you're so right. I kept thinking I should take a picture but every time I decided I had to press on instead for a fast time (only in my dreams).
I wouldn't want to inflict my bare legs on the world even in summer. Knee length is as short as I go to protect my dignity!!! :o
I forgot my camera this time and I wasn't going for a fast time, just a finish. Even so I wouldn't have stopped to take photo's. Keeping going was hard enough as it was!! :D
Anyone seen any sign of any photos? There was at least one photographer I saw (top of Chevin) taking general, non-club specific, photos.
Only ones I saw were the ones on Ilkley Harriers page. I haven't seen any others surface yet
My wife's got a few of me on the climb up to Baildon Trig Point !
...Well, it'll be a bit different next year! Loads of flagstones have appeared between the Ilkley moor trig, and Whetstone gate. They aren't laid as yet, but they look like they'll be extending that horrible slippy flagged path for quite a way towards the trig point.
Gritstone flags like the ones that are there now or like a proper path? I can handle gritstone type paths, the one that's there at the moment doesn't overly bother me to be honest. As long as it doesn't cover half the moor I'm not too bothered. That section is a *astard in very wet weather
About time. That flagged path has been a half-started nothing for enough years now. This year it was striking to me how pristine the moor was for the short flagged stretch, and how wrecked it was where the flags did not reach.
It's flags like the other bits. I know it's to stop erosion and so obviously 'a good thing', but I don't like running on them. As I say though, good for the moor in general.
They needed to get them shifted. The flags were stockpiled opposite Darwin Gardens for a few months, in a massive metal-fenced cage.
Would have played havoc with the IMFR this weekend.
As it is, the Junior IMFR races need to run across an area of bad damage to the grass where the flags were piled up which is pure mud; might be worth watching!
I've just been emailed to say entrys forms are out. It's a well organised 23 mile LDWA event over Baildon and Ilkley Moor on 4th Feb 2012.
I got that email too Alan. I'm looking forward to it. 3:40 last year, maybe closer to 3 hours this year? Should be fun
Is it postal entry only or will it be online on Sportident or similar?
cheers
MT
Postal entries only as far as I'm aware.
not done this but always fancied a return to my routes(see what I did there;))
I'll check out the race calendar and put it in.
Thanks Rob.
Just found a copy of the entry form here: http://tenzingshireoak.files.wordpre...-form-2012.pdf
I'll hopefully be doing it again. Enjoyed this years until Ilkley Moor when I had an epidemic of constantly falling over
Hmmm sounds intresting , there's not a lot on in feb eitther. Might have a look .
Fun event. Weather can be a bit of a challenge. Worth a recce if you can fit it in. Otherwise stick with people who know the route.
