Speaking of kit ...
Can any of you who did the last recce advise on a suitable choice of shoes?
Is it simply Walsh, Walsh or Walsh, or did anyone try anything else?
I wore Walsh Ultras and they worked fine for me. Others had various Inov-8s. Ask Huwski about his!
I wouldn't recommend Gladiators. They'd be far too slippery on the rocks.
the rest of the gang will tell you that my walshs was a tad on the worn side:rolleyes: but i hammered it down the scree off scafell full pelt and they coped very well, my advice would be to make sure your fell shoes are well bedded in as this route at race pace will no doubt tell on the feet.
I'm sure that's right (not that the 'race pace' factor is particularly relevant in my case). My worry is, that Walshes tend to flay my feet if I wear them for more than a couple of hours, especially my new(ish) PB Racers. That's why I wondered if there were any alternatives. Thanks for your replies.
not sure what flay your feet means
PB racers are very light, i may put mine on for the race , the ultras that marvin had on looked very nice
shame he didnt leave them in the car park:rolleyes:
whatever you have on i think its going to be pain pain pain over the last part of the race
To be honest there was no visibility so I'm not sure which way people went.
I was left behind on Scafell Pike but saw Huwski go straight off the top (C?). I backtracked to the col (probably A but could have been B). Daz should know because he came down with me after he had come looking for me!
well when i went up on friday I had a good look at this straight off the top route (C?) i dont fancy it because of the boulders you have to cross - anyway i think I'm going to get rid of this picture before anyone sees it and decides to try it and it isnt actually a route - i suppose the only person who can answer is Huwski........ S~d it! I'm going to make this pic my avatar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and I remember crossing Moo as i went up sca fell pike (on the race last year)- she was coming off it as i was still going up, she was heaing for the scree of her choice and I was still asking folk whcih scree they were going for - i think going for scree B (which I did on the race) saved me 5 mins - I went down the scree B VERY fast, I had found scree A very slow and un safe like - adding to the problem is that people (normal walking type people)were coming up scree A so you cant get a clear run - I made the cut off last year by about 4 mins so that choice of scree route for me was essential, i really dont think choosing C if it were a route would be any w#quicker than B - cos of those boulders at the bottom - that would slow me down -we all run differently however on differnt terrain though.
sunny - are you going to danefield tomorrow?:)
I dont think route C exists!!!!!
Route A is the backtrack, and I dont like it either!
Route B does not involve a back track: you bee line the top of the scree which from memory ( no map to hand ) is due N, where the back track route A is more NE
Theres a massive drop where you show route C, and whilst we tried going further towards lingmell on a previous reccie ( beyond C) the ground is no good for fast running - going down to lingmell col and the start of the corridor is OK as an idea, but it is further and probably loses a couple of minutes.
no route C doesnt exist , to steep , and to slow
route B is very quick going down if you just hit the scree , lean back a tad and dig in
its worth recceing just to know what to expect on the day cos if you have never done it before it can be daunting
daleside did someone tell you theres a route down point C
all this confusion is based on a conversation i had with dom the day after you did your recce. but i appreciate it was a poor day that you did your recce on .
I do believe always injured has actually settled my worries on this! thanks for your post - shoudl I take the picture down now so not to confuse cyber generations of borrowdalers reading it out of context!
The plot shows Route A off Scafell Pike - yes, I went that way, but I'm up for route B in the race. Route B is just to the left and I think it comes down beside Dropping Crag - see purple line. I'm sure someone who went down Route B could confirm.
Isn't it funny how pictures (like the featured A,B,& C one) never do a mountain justice......makes Scafell look like a little molehill. If only./.....
