I think I'll just follow straggler around, then blame him if I get lost :o)
i'm following that Haileunlikely around even though he seems like a bit of a to$$er
Just a bit?
ok alot....
My mate's been doing some recce runs too - sounds like I won't need to worry about navigation at all ;o)
I've spent them socialising while my mate's been doing all the hard work :o)
If my navigation is as bad as last weekend I can see me being nearer 18 hours than 8
lol - hoping to hone my navigation skills at Gatliff at the end of the month, but if it's anything like last year, I'll still manage to get lost a few times.....
Recce Reminder......
This is for all of you out there that have not done enough training – you know who you are!!!!!
2 of us (BritNick and me) are doing a recce on Sat 22 Nov (this Sat), the last push, from Maltby (15miles) to the end/start. Meeting at the event centre at 7.45am, all welcome
I know I haven’t
Was going to do the recce with you Chris - but at that time in the morning??? !!! Will probably have to rely on memory and those wonderful strip maps this year.
Looks like I'll be relying on memory too. Boy am I going to be in trouble
Chris,
I don't think I will be able to make it tomorrow. I need to come into work instead on an urgent job. I have sent you emails but got no response. I hope you get the message in time. I feel
I'm now working tomorrow too. Though the 7.45 start would have ruled me out anyway.
Strip maps look ok to follow *tempts fate*
Just printed off the strip maps for this year. It's getting close - only a few weeks left. Note the weather's getting colder. Oh how nice! Just need some hail now (which I didn't actually notice last year very much!).
Did a recce today last 24 miles and never seen mud like it, the mud builds up like wearing space boots! a speciality of Rotherham perhaps. The route maps are good as long as you dont go wrong, best to take a map as well. So its the full 50 next week.
Ashamed to say 4.30hrs. At the moment, next sat forecast looking V cold and very windy!
Today's "speedwork" aka Luton marathon was cancelled :(
Ashamed, Chris? I can only assume you meant you are ashamed that you were so fast (considering it was only a recce) and you didn't give yourself a chance to take it all in as everything whizzed past in a haze. Were you aiming for the win on Saturday, by any chance? ;)
Seriously though, that's pretty quick considering the mud platforms you were running on (I remember it well) and it wasn't the real race.
See you all on Saturday. Are there any of Paul M's guineapigs on here? I'm quite looking forward to the rests at the checkpoints during the bloodletting procedures.
Why was Luton cancelled, mxh? Something serious must have happened to cancel an event like that?
All the info as to why here BritNick http://www.lutonmarathon.org.uk/
Beaten to it. Organisers had no real option and I have no quibbles about it.
On the positive side I should be that bit fresher for Saturday now, I was quite dubious about not getting drawn in to running faster than planned on the day.
Oo-er. That looks serious. Cancellation was obviously the only decision the organisers could have taken. I'm glad to hear no-one was injured.
Weather not looking very good according to this

Enjoy ? More like endure ;)
Anyone know the cure for trench foot ?
In fact in all seriousness if the weather is going to be crappy then I'd recommend packing that second bag full of dry clothes that gets taken to about the 30 odd mile point (the soup stop in fact) I remember feeling very jealous of those donning clean DRY gear as we stood freezing and wet :(
Definitely was going for a change of shoes if required at "half way" dry clothes would be great at least for a mile until soaked through again.
Also being serious I'm sure it will help mentally knowing you have change of gear waiting and then feeling much better after leaving checkpoint too and then hopefully having the end in sight by the time you are wet and cold again.
eh  you found a radiator that was ON??? The one I tried to dry my gloces on was a cold as ice!
Paul - I think a dry hat, pair of gloves, socks shoes et al after 30 miles is more than a mental boost - It won't be soaking you through to the skin and will take more than a mile to get saturated again.
It's the one and only thing I'd wished I'd had the foresight to sort.
Or I could try copying the woman who ran our half marathon the other week in wellies  Very odd for a road race on a dry day !!
Wouldn't bother with spare clothes. They'll get wet soon enough, and you'll stiffen up trying to get into them. Better to crack on as soon as you've necked 5 or 6 lukewarm cups of tea (in a vain attempt to get some circulation going).
Weather looks epic (again). I did think it couldn't be worse than last year. I may have been rather wrong...
Stop trying to confuse me ;)
Having given it some thought I'll be opting for clothes that will come off go on easily.
Only another 25 miles ?
