in my opinion, this is the best tri of all tri's for a fellrunner.
swim semer water,
on bike climb 1-4 within 100 meters,
through askrigg 1-4,1-5,1-4 down to muker,
climb buttertubs 1-4
descend past hardraw,up to garsdale head, coal road,1-4,drop past dent station, follow road under viaduct, you guessed 1-4
drop to hawes, then run pennine way to great shunner and back.
low key race like most good fell races and the atmostphere and camradie are second to none.
Went for a ride today and someone threw a can of Coke at my head, good job it was only a soft drink....
50 miles tonight. Hard wind going out .Coming back i saw an angel on the bike in front of me which made me pedal faster. I tried my best but the angel kept going faster. I buried myself mile after mile in the vain hope of catching the princess of the road. After twenty miles the gap was still 20 yards. Finally she slowed which allowed me to draw near. I could barely lift my head through the effort i had put in. As i got close she turned her head and blew me a kiss and then as though it was nothing pulled away and was gone.I was broken, a broken rider. Heartbroken, tears rolled down my face, my body was spent. I stopped cursing my luck. Who was this maiden of the road. Id never seen her before, never. Thousands of miles id travelled this road and never once come across her on the bike. How could she had ridden away like that. ?How could i have not tried harder? As i sat at the side of the road with my head in my hands with the sun shining on my bike i felt something behind me.I turned round and there she was.She said to me that i could have one wish and one wish only.I closed my eyes and made the wish. Re opened my eyes and she was gone again.I picked my bike up and carried on riding. Faster now as though i had wings. The miles flew past and before i knew it was finished. The wish had been granted. The princess of the road had granted me a lowly roadman a tailwind.Happy days. Its amazing what happens when you fall asleep in a bus shelter.Remember my fellow bikies. The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long.
56 minutes on the rollers again for me today. 60 mins yesterday, errr 50 odd tuesday and can't remember monday was it 70, who knows? - could do with a little black book to write it all down in I guess.
Anyone know of someone who's flogging an old set of rollers off cheap?
you want to be careful getting second hand ones - they come covered in all sorts of smeg
anyway - can't you just get out and ride??? ;)
I have those takx ones... like them, but have no comparison...
And I have been out on the roads, in the Lakes... for a minor jaunt accross some Lakeland passes... I am afraid I have to admit that riding the Fred Whitton route has left me utterly exhausted and to my shame, I had to bail on the 30% bsection of Hardknott :( It was quite scary that the front wheel came off the tarmac but when I leant forward more the rear wheel started spinning... and a car behind me was burning out his clutch trying to get up as well. I was reminded by the friend I rode it with that it wasn't to be ashamed about, because most blokes don't dare to even start the ride on a standard chainset... I do know that when I do it again next year, officially, I shall fit a compact to the bike though! Bloody hard work!!! Descending Hardknott and Wrynose scared the shit out of me too...
Awesome day though! Nothing better than seeing the whole of the Lakes in one day from your bike! Good weather for it too :)
And the quality of the road isnt the best. The passes are starting to break up bigtime in places. Well done. Def no shame in reporting you didnt quite manage it.The trick with getting up it on a std double is to learn how to literally balance as your pedals go over twelve o clock. Nice and steady at the start but it is tough.A compact will help, problem is if you get a car behind you its difficult.Another trick is to starve yourself for a week, lol.Just off out for a sat afternoon ride.
Oh just realised the vuelta starts today. Best hurry up. Mind i thnk itv are covering it.
Yep
4pm today.

Thanks Daz :) Yes, there must be a balancing technique where you can keep turning the pedals and keep enough momentum not to fall over, as well as not to lift either your frnt of the road or have your rear spinning. I must find a steep bit of road arounhd here and try find that point...
Having a car behind AND in front, one going up one coming down wasn't exactly helpful either! I REALLY scared myswelf on the descent... must practice that too...
Looking at my Garmin, I managed 159.8 kms (100 miles) in 7 hrs 2 minutes... considering the fact that the whole route is 112 miles... I don't think that was bad going actually :) Just missed out Honister...
Just got back for the Vuelta. 57miles for me. Great going out, but a hard wind coming back which made it tough.
DEf has to be the hardest stretch of the A6 when its windy.
Just watching your crowd Hann, team rabobank doing the TT. Nice bibshorts indeed.
Yes good time for your ride
I view of a looming Three Peaks Cyclocross race and the road racing about to come to an end, I decided to take the crosser out this morning... Tried shouldering it, which I can just about do with my dicky separated shoulder, as long as I do it carefully and not swing it over my shoulder... I also rode a trail I found quite hard last year when I last rode it and this time I hurtled down it without trouble. Those two MTB trail centre sessions must be doing something then :)
I tinkered with the bike last night. New saddle, well old comfy one of an old road bike, but new to the crosser, put the saddle up a couple of cms too and forward a little. I also dropped the handlebar stem from facing upwards to facing downwards, so the bars are slightly lower. Put pipelagging back on top and down tube to protect my shoulder and off I went for another little practise ride. Much better! especially the shouldering. I did think about using my other shoulder... must give that a try next time!
Had a whiz round one of the Whinlatter trails last week. Which was nice.
Well perhaps whiz isn't the best word.
You could try 'waz' although I can't promise that's not 'weeing'.
'You had a waz round Whinlatter', or 'I had a waz in our compost bin'.
I had a zoom round Whinlatter I think... no wee in sight, but you could hear me go weeeeeee quite a bit :)
I now wonder if you were there when I was Grouse... I was there last Wednesday...
There is a nice ice cream van as you drop down from whinlatter.A few hill reps for me tonight on the bike. Legs very tired. Watched the vuelta when i got in.Hann you would know if you met grouse. Lovely man.Helped me achieve my bob graham. Top man
Ahhh, not necessarily, as we could both have been riding the trails without knowing you see :) I did have a chat with a few blokes riding up the South red trail though, and Grouse could have been one of them :)
Didn't see the icecream van :(
Aww Daz I return the compliment. I was there on Tuesday on the south red altura trail as it happens. Don't really consider myself a mountain biker but had a mosey and really enjoyed it on a bit of an old faithful I bought off Fishbulb for my son a couple of years ago but he's outgrown it. It's only just big enough for me but a grin to ride in fact I've hardly ridden my road bike since I inherited it.
It's Luchini isn't it? Doesn't he normally park up by Fitz Park?
Ah, so I missed you by a day, pity... If only one knew these things beforehand, we could have done that loop together and have an icecream after :)
Good solid 70 miler at the weekend, up into the Beacons and screaming back over Penderyn Moor at breakneck speed on the R3 despite the head wind, that road is such fun and the scenery sublime, no wonder Top Gear are always using it!
Sadly the frolics were ruined by the wreckage of road maintenance wreaked by Rhondda Cynon Taff council on our favourite Rhigos mountain, ok I know there were a few holes and a bit of work was needed but the previous smooth and pleasant surface has been tarred and chipped and badly at that, completely buggered! Now the holes are still there but full of chippings, at least you could avoid the holes! A wonderful descent trashed. So I had a "99" at the ice cream van at the top and stomped off home down the valley in a grump:angry:, but feeling righteous after my longest ride since the Marmotte.
Last week I was in France with my mum, bro, his missus and by baby nephew (baby acclimatisation trip) - was lovely and sunny but very flat - did a variation on this loop a few times (on the amazing shopper bike my mum keeps out there)

Then last night after work rode to meet the chap for tea at the Grouse (from chesterfield) - but they don't do food on Mondays

Toffer I feel your pain with the chippings. The most outdated way of repairing a road surface.
They have just done a road near here. No attempt to fill holes, no planing of the surface, no lets get the road level first just chuck some chippings on top with a bit of tar and thats it.
The road surfaces in Derbyshire are a complete joke as are the rest of the country.
With the bad winters returing its time the goverment invested into road repairs or we are going to have major problems. We should have pumped a few hundred million into the roads and created growth and jobs instead of giving the banks what they wanted and now being told what we have been.
I led a bit of a campaign a few yrs ago to get a road re surfaced. It worked after months of complaining. And that is the problem. Everyone moans but no one officialy complains.
When I had a meeting with the road engineer for that stretch of road I asked him if he thought it was substandard for bikes to go on. It turns out he had been reporting it for over 15yrs to be resurfaced.
