Inspiration and some "Ice cold in Alex" thinking. I have 4x50cm carpet mats in the boot to stand on whilst changing after running.

So 50 m up this track in sheet ice I inched my way up.
Carpet down drive 50 cms put next 2 mats down-drive 50cm- pick up mat behind tyre and put in front drive 50cms repeat approx 100 times and an hour later I crept on to the road....:thumbup:

Moral of the story Carpet is great to get you out of trouble on ice

I'll take this advice in reverse. I recently put a couple of old carpet off-cuts into the car boot for just such a situation (getting a grip on ice), but hadn't thought about how useful they might be for standing on post run/race. Thanks for the tip:D.

MrRTS had a bit of a (all I can call it is a breakdown) a couple of years ago and took up snowboarding! He went twice and thankfully came to his senses :-). We put the board and boots on e-bay tonight with a starting bid, a reserve price and a buy it now price! Whoosh ....... Buy it now within 60mins of posting. Never realised so many people were having breakdowns!!!

Perfect "walking" snow above 2,000ft on the Fairfield horseshoe today - a bit of give to provide grip, but not so much you sink through it. Hard ground and quite a bit of ice elsewhere - but nothing you cannot walk around. I had microspikes in my pack, and they stayed there. Cold wind on top, but sunny throughout.
