Well done Salford Rockets
I think you should all be proud you did it, the weather was blumming freezing, you had promises of pie and peas and some did not get them! and if you got to the finish then well done the lot of you!
Being a Salford Girl i have to say a big well done to you lot, has its nice to hear we win something!
Any more photos? I am sure somebody took our photo as we headed out on leg4 I think it was just around the top of hardcastle crags?
Thanks to Halifax for another enjoyable relay day
If Sale are racing in a Fell Race event, Pike and a Mr Green, would have to don the Sale Colours as that is their 1st claim club. :D
So i guess they'll both be wanting to see some improvement on our debut attempt at Fell Racing, and Horwich will be hoping we all go back to running along the flat of the Mersey Valley. ;)
I think our Team Manager hoping to get 2 mens and a Ladies team for the Pennine BW Relay is a bit ambitious with only a month to prepare. I think 2 mixed teams would be better, and more fun.

Sounds like Pike realises that he has more chance of success on the fells with Team Horwich rather than Sale Harriers. Just like Nick Leigh realised when he managed to set the standard for all to follow by picking which ever fell club he wanted to run for regardless of the fact that his own club were a very established fell club, enter many a FRA relay etc and di rather wekk in them.
Good luck to you Pike, you carry on running for Horwich as I would love to see what people could do about the issue.
As far as I know - and that isn't very far;) - Mr Leigh did have a written agreement with the NoEAA to do this and it was also agreed by both clubs.
So although it is a breach of the rules as they are set out, it is in fact an authorised one.
The only other such "bending" I'm aware of was Michael Hunt of Pendle, a club who stopped participating in relays as they didn't have enough seniors interested to take part. So he got authorisation to run road only for Trafford about 3 years ago - he has since moved clubs altogether I think.
I think the worry for some of these other examples quoted on a regular basis is that they are self-appointed first claims wthout clear authority from the relevant eligibility committee and would be vulnerable to a challenge should anyone make one.
In such a situation, a significant team DQ may well be the outcome, unless they have some sort of written clearance to move clubs allegiances as they do.
Will anyone ever make the challenge though, or will we all just scratch each others eyes out on the forum?
I would as well.
Could you imagine what the organisers would do if an objection to a P&B result was lodged?
But who's going to lodge it?
If the adjudication came down in P&B's favour, the whole UKA rulebook on membership and eligibility would have to be rewritten.
Read the 2008 Rules of Competition:-
http://www.ukathletics.net/competiti...les/?locale=en
There's a PDF at the bottom of the page with the whole rule book.
In Brief though, Members can only represent there 1st claim clubs in Club competitions. Open events and higher tier events are the only exceptions where athletes can represent a 2nd claim club other than written agreements between the two Clubs involved.
I'm not saying this is right! Just the Rules as they stand.
Good effort on taking the time to read one of many rule books out there. This issue was discussed at your club's last Annual General Meeting. It was very interesting, you should have been there. Perhaps you've seen the minutes, in which it should say that 2008 would be the year your club would justify its affiliation to fell running. Now that the English and British championships and UKA Relays have been concluded, the 2008 Open Team Championship results make interesting reading.
For rule junkies, when you've learnt all the UKA rules, there are some more published by the FRA, and yet more from England Athletics. Note the one where clubs are requested not disadvantage their athletes by affiliating to disciplines where they won't be competing in team competition. So affiliation is for team competition? What if a club affiliates year after year for decades, without actually providing any team competition whatsoever - who is breaking the rules then?
"Runners may count in team fell races for their first claim Club only. This Club may be different from their first claim road, cross country or track Club."
If in the meantime, any of your members have switched to what is undeniably a "fell running club" in order to enjoy their fell running and partake in team competition, you are not likely to win them back by turning up at Calderdale and waving the rule book in their face.
For road running, it is made clear that you can't suddenly revert clubs. It is a fair assumption that the same can be said for other disciplines: "In the event of a Club that has not organised a road running section and subsequently does so, that Club cannot claim the services of any runner who has previously represented another Club in road running team races unless that runner has resigned from membership of the Club which he/she last represented in a road running team race".
Good luck in the 2009 open team championships. You have my full support, but not as a competing athlete. I can't speak for anyone else.
Is there any photos of this race?
There was certainly a photographer on several of the legs but I haven't seen any info. on photos.
One would think that with well over a thousand runners taking part a few might be interested in a piccie or 2???

Printed entry forms for the 2009 event have been sent to team captains. As with last year, (see the above post) the start grid ref is incorrect, 080224 is nowhere near the start, it should be more like 097214. However the info on the organisers' web site is correct (apart from that Linda Crabtree is no longer the contact for further information, it should be Mick Fryer). Leg description info is also up, having been copied and pasted from elsewhere, word for word. Nice to see these are now officially endorsed! ;)
Teams are still being advised to obtain a copy of the 'Calderdale Way' booklet. I've always failed in my efforts to locate one.
hope this isnt a thread already running (!) im doing leg 6, which os will do anyone? also no ones reccying it by chance or fancies a recce? dave

I know leg 3 well enough but 5  whats it like ?
Leg 2 is the only one I've done - make sure you slow down at the stables - the owners can get a bit irrate if the horses get disturbed.
you must WALK through the stable yard or risk disqualification !!
pat the horses on the head and say hello to them :)
