Cheers Rodders, looking forward to it. No real aches after last Saturday, and had the club Summer Handicap on Tuesday - 3 mile fell 'sprint'...had a decent pace, but no oomph, no gear changes...lots of rest and pasta and see what happens on the day!!
Last climb was a killer, but was a great race
Hope to see you there DJ.
I have been resting this week too (relative to recent weeks) - my current training 'strategy' is to rest one week in four.
I reccied the main loop from Holme Moss car park (including the Bareholme to Laddow Rocks bit) last week with a clubmate, but in the dry, and in mudclaws (which seemed fine), so I guess it will be rather wetter tomorrow after the last 24 hours of rain.
I have put my faith in Ugali (just polished off a mound with stew and allotment veg) rather than Pasta - so will have to compare notes with you post race! ;)
Ooh, I had to Google Ugali, looks interesting!
It's certainly going to be a day for grip, my old faithful Walsh's may get an airing. Realised earlier that I've been working off an old route map, so having to realign my head tonight. Going to be a tough race, but should be a great one too - see you there!
I'm working, but remember my attempt at it, back in 2010
I'll freely admit I suffered greatly!!
Good luck to all taking part, & I hope this evenings thunderstorms don't return for you all!!
1st 2 at Crowden seemed to have a healthy lead.

A very tough day out today but thanks to all involved  draft results now on hhac website.

Thanks to everyone at HH for a great day. It's truly an epic race - though I wasn't feeling so complimentary about it on the way round! You struggle to the top of Holme Moss on the way back (that mast looks SO far away!) and think 'great, just back to the finish the way we came'. Took nearly an hour and it KILLS! That last climb is just not funny! But another memorable day in perfect weather:cool:
BTTF - nice photos (and cause - I've had malaria a few times whilst growing up in the tropics, fortunately treated quickly).
Love the one of me (43) going over the stile into Crowden, spread eagled trying to land on your head. Will email you for a 'neg' after making a donation.
A huge thanks to HH, MRT, and all others involved for a superb day of racing. Lovely summer venue up there on the hill too. I have always wanted to do this race, and now look forward to being back. I managed a 90 minute yoga class at 6pm, and I am hoping that will help fend off the DOMS in the next two days.
Fabulous race, thanks to everyone involved, especially Phil Hobbs for his support up that last climb whilst my thighs were cramping like crazy....great route, great atmosphere and some epic racing (how is sub 3 hours even possible!!)...super to see so many faces (hello OB1!), may well be back next year and hopefully my legs won't die on me as much as they did at Holme Moss this year...
who else will be there on Sunday...?
will be my first - recced round it a few weeks ago and expecting it to be an epic day since I have hardly run at all for the last 3 weeks!
I'm giving it serious consideration. I plotted the route on Tracklogs last night, copying the provided map but following local terrain in greater detail where possible. It came out at 17.4 miles with 4,103 feet of ascent.
I've never done it before either. From what I've read it's tough, but how tough? Can it be tougher than the steepest, roughest parts of The Fellsman - e.g. climb up Gragareth where you'll fall backwards if you don't keep your wits about you?
BritNick I'd say your plotting is very accurate. The finish changed a few years ago and I think it is still listed in the calendar with an old distance because I've done it 4 times since & always clocked 17+.
I can't compare it to the Fellsman but it definitely packs a punch & there are parts where you could fall back were you not careful.
Good luck all & enjoy!
@BritNick
Having done both HM & Fellsman There are certainly two (maybe three) climbs around HM that compare to Gragareth. One straight after Crowden is pretty steep but short. the second up to CP 5 is also very steep and rocky. lastly the extremely steep descent/ascent right at the beginning/end is a slide down and a finger nails dirty up!
I measured it at 17.8m and 3750ft. ( think the published mileage is to make it AL rather than BL)
enjoy!
Took me 3 35 back in 2010 if it is the kne from the cricket ground. I remember some boggy bits but seem to have filtered out any memory of the hills ;)
Thanks everyone for the feedback.
Karen I'm banking on the bogs being dried up. ;) If it took you 3:35 I'll prepare for up to 5 hours then.
Nick - have you recce'd it? If not, you're in for a treat doing the Bareholme-Laddow section! ;)
I'm expecting close to 5hrs myself btw
Daz it's all new to me apart from the parts that share the Crowden Horseshoe route because I've done that once before. I'll have my 1:25,000 Tracklogs printout with me and a compass to point the way. I did notice the crevasse we have to negotiate on the section you mention. It looks as though an angle right down to the bottom before veering left back up to CP5 might work. Is that what you do?
This is going to be my first AL race. I ran a recce the other week and blew up spectacularly, which was a first for me, even though I've run further and higher before. So I'm excited and nervous at the same time. Still, the suffering is part of the fun. At least I know I can get around when my body fails me!
Matthew
From people's descriptions the apparent toughness of this race is worrying me. I'm not sure if it should be forming part of my taper for Lakeland 100 a week today.
Nick - there is quite a lot of rough ground - personally I'd be a bit worried about maybe turning an ankle so close to a major event such as L100...
you could just jog round gently at the back... i.e. stick with me! ;)
It is a tough race, and there is plenty of scope for slips/trips/twists, especially on the second half when you are knackered. I think I fell into the heather 4-5 times when I did it.
@BritNick
mmmm.
I don't want to put you off a great event because i really enjoyed it, but it is tough. despite (probably) being BL and not in the Lakes it is worthy of its AL tag. I suppose it really depends how much you have done this week and how much you are planning to do next week. I think you'll be OK, just take it easy next week and treat it like a training run not a race.
It's not like your new to this sort of thing!
Bogs weren't too bad on Tuesday evening, as ground still quite firm despite the recent rain.
I'll be sweeping on Sunday, getting some time into my legs in preparation for Borrowdale, so feel free to stay just ahead of me!! ;)
I really fancy this today but can't get to it in time due to other commitments. Have a good one everyone, it's a great race. I don't think it's an ankle turner if that helps britnick, it's hard but you can run it steady if you wish and enjoy it.
Is it EOD? The website says so but P and Bramleys site says pre entry only. I don't want to travel an hour if ill not be allowed to run.

Provisional results are on here -
I helped with the results, so whilst a copy has been sent to Holmfirth Harriers I thought I might as well try and get them on here.;-)
A great run right down to getting orange squash at checkpoint 3, a welcome sugar boost for reaching cps 4 & 5. Then eating a jaffa cake at cp 5 while running like a dying Furby kept me until the end... I'd say it was a negative split for me, but the second part's flatter. You know what I mean. Hoping that raffle number 128 didn't get the Miniature Heroes because I gave that to a fellow CVFR runner before leaving as I didn't want to hang around. Most of all I'm chuffed to have completed the home strait at a good tempo, given that last year I crashed somewhere along Twizle Head Moss and have never felt more exhausted.
Hoping to keep Holme Moss as a regular and now advance into a few even tougher longs. No Bens of Jura just yet though.
now that was a proper race! I've never felt as toasted as I did at the end. £7 for sandwich, cake, tea and a massive bonk - great value for money!
I didn't realise nav skills were required to find the cricket club, I ran up the track to see you all setting off in the distance, so I made it by the skin of my teeth. Judging by the number of locals saying you're not the first to ask directions i wasn't the only one driving around like a mad man. So chuffed the start was delayed. great race.
Well that was tough - easily the toughest fell race I've ever done. I treated it as an Ultra. There was a lot of walking and shuffling involved, especially after the mountaineering. I had plenty of food, water and electrolyte to hand (literally - I ran with my signature two handheld bottles) but I still slowed dramatically with the usual complaining legs. My last food was a gel at the bottom of the final climb, after which I zipped up the hill and overtook a few others to the finish and a lovely welcome as my fellow Glossopdale Harriers cheered me up the field to the line.
