Very quiet on this thread, is everyone over on Facebook? Not on there, I'm afraid.
Went up for a reccy yesterday, did Mam Nick to Brown Knoll, then all the way around to Ringing Roger, and down the the finish (of course, then hed to get back to car at Mam Nick...). Great fun with the deep snow on top - apparently made the running easier in places that are usually muddy. This will be my first Skyline, so am looking forward to it. I'm not convince I have it sussed yet, so will be relying on following tracks in snow, or simply runners in front. Hope I sahll not have to use the map and compass in anger!
well you've reccied the tricky bit there I think
the sections before and after brown knoll struck me as the only bits where the compass might come out to head on the best line, if you don't trust the people in front
the last four, five miles or so is pretty much on the walkers' path round the edge of kinder as I remember it?
but then I'm talking from only reccying it once
Just to check with everyone Mam Nick car park is on the Rushup Edge rd.
Thanks IDP. Where are you training today ?.
Can anyone offer any route advice from Lords Seat to Brown Knoll trig?
Reccyd it recently & a couple of times a few years back & have always followed a broken wall then run on a bearing, always ending up following a kind of trough up the last bit which is just to the right of the trig. This works ok but takes you through all the bogs. When i raced it 2 years ago I played follow my leader & seemed to go much further left avoiding most of the bogs. Wondered which route is best. If the "race route" is the better option any hints on how I can find it again please :D
The way you describe is the way I go normally and seems to avoid the worst of the bogs. It may be different if its frozen though as the signposted path (at least I think there is a sign) further to the left is arguably easier running although a bit longer.
thats pretty much it. after the wall watch for the BS you can run either side of the ditch. Left is shorter but right is dryer (Usually):D
If there is a frost before the race the gully looks like a fast way up with compacted snow.
Thats why BK is the most feared part of the route
