I spy with a Leeds eye😂🤣😂
It’s all just a misunderstanding. He was actually looking for Derby cathedral. 😂
It’s good in an everchsnging and volatile world that we can rely on certain things: the days getting longer after Christmas, consistently good pork pies baked in Skipton, Leeds cheating . . .
With a heavy heart I feel that I have to agree with you there. Some disgraceful scenes last night, the way the Leeds players totally dominated the match, barely allowing the Derby players out of their own half and playing such spellbinding football. Must have made the Derby players feel totally inadequate. If that's not ungentlemanly conduct, bringing the game into disrepute then I don't know what is. And that's twice they've done it this season too! Makes me ashamed to be a Leeds fan.
I’m sure the team you describe will be a great addition to the premier league assuming their good form continues. No doubt you’ll be made most welcome
I think he was looking for a good footballing coach.
Obviously he went to the wrong club.
I wonder which one of these gets the sack, Kepa Arrizabalaga or Maurizio Sarri? I know which one I'd fire.
Both😂🤣
Well that were impressive from man u last night.
That result probably just got Olly the job full time.
Liverpool through if half time score stands.
Good stuff.
4 English clubs in the last 8 of European cup
How many English players? How many English managers?
Could probably count them on yer fingers. Might have between 5 & 10.
Out of 4 full teams,
A quick scan through the lineups of each team's previous match, i make it about 13 (would probably be less if Manchester United were able to field a stronger team, and if Manchester City had felt the need to field a full strength team).
The whole competition is a joke really. Despite the efforts of UEFA and the tv companies to make it into effectively a super-league, it's still a cup competition, and should be regarded as such... were Liverpool the best team in Europe in 2005? What about Porto in the early 2000's...? I highly doubt it.
The view that the quarter-final lineup makes England the 'best league' is ridiculous... the Champions League is skewed so that English, Spanish, German clubs dominate, and with yearly fluctuations (appears to be our turn this year) this is what happens.
We (as a footballing country) are so ignorant of this fact... the attitude of "we're alright Jack..." seems to prevail. We regard the French league as a joke league, which is effectively because UEFA don't think there's enough money to be made from giving them more champions league places, which in turn restricts the amount of money in their league, and the amount of top players who will go there. Why do great footballing nations like the Yugoslavian nations, Sweden, Russia, Turkey, etc, get such a raw deal.
We're ok though, because we get the thick slice of the pie.
The Champions League (a laughable title really) is basically a vehicle for UEFA and the TV companies to maximise revenue. The football is an inconvenience really... i have no doubt that is they could get away with showing 90minutes of advertising, that's exactly what they'd do... the football is just the vehicle to get large amounts of viewers (and hence the advertisers) on board... anyone who thinks differently i would suggest is being rather naïve.
Totally agree Travs. It has not really interested me since it stopped being The European Cup when only the top team from each country could enter. The current position where some countries have 4 entries and others have one is a complete farce. Apart from hoping Liverpool don't win it I couldn't give a shit.
As pointed out by Wheeze in another thread The Six Nations is poised to sell its soul and will similarly end up being an advert fest.
Yes i intended to mention that rugby (both domestically and internationally) looks like it will eventually head in the same direction. Whilst i am not necessarily a big fan of rugby, i am following developments with interest, as it closely relates to the situation in Coventry, with Wasps (imposters), CCFC and CRFC.
Also wholeheartedly agree with Liverpool, hopefully they get rogered senseless in the next round, not to mention cocking it up in the premier league.
Yes, it has ultimately wrecked the European competition system... the European Cup was the premier competition, but the original UEFA Cup was an extremely strong competition and arguably as difficult as the European Cup. The cup-winners-cup was exciting due to the variety of teams which could pop up. I am fairly convinced that we would have had a great shout at winning the ECWC the year after we won the FA Cup in 1987, if we hadn't been banned from Europe due to everyone's favourites Liverpool...
The Champions LEague/Europeam Cup should quite obviously be the league winners from each nation, the winners from the previous year, and could argue a case for the winners of the UEFA cup to get in as well.
I think the number of teams per country is based on that country's coefficient. This is calculated on how those teams have done in recent years. France is currently awarded three teams. I do recall England only getting three teams, which at the time was a shame for my team Leeds who finished fourth, third and then fourth again between 1999 and 2001. They only qualified for the Champions League in 2000 (and went on the reach the semi-final). I think it was fairly soon after that England was given four teams but by then we had begun our spectacular free fall.
You are correct. But how can it be allowed to reach a situation where some leagues get 4 places in the group stages, and other nations get a single place which they still have to go through qualifying for? Why are the likes of Arsenal/Spurs/Sevilla/Monchengladbach granted favourable entry over the likes of Slavia Prague or Red Star Belgrade? The answer appears simply to be that they come from a big-money league.
That is just increasing the gap between the leagues.
Again, the co-efficient is just UEFA's way of getting more teams from the money-spinning leagues (England, Spain, Germany, Italy) into the final stages.
Does recent history of that particular team have a bearing on it perhaps? Again going back to Leeds, after finishing third in 2000 we had to go through a qualifying round before gaining entry to the Champions League proper. Although Leeds had an illustrious European pedigree in the 60's and 70's they'd not actually competed in European competition since 1979.
Celtic tend to have to go through a qualifying round each year but I think that is because when they do get to the group stages they often perform poorly.
The big leagues of course do have the advantage of the most money so can afford the best players. Therefore they are more likely to succeed but it is encouraging to see Ajax doing so well this year. They have a famous past of course but the Dutch League is relatively poor in comparison to the big four. I'd like to see an English team win it (apart from Man U) but if not then I'm rooting for Ajax.
This thread has reminded me of the Anglo-Italian Cup of the early nineties. I recall going to Bramall Lane to watch Sheffield Utd v Udinese. It was more like mixed martial arts than a football match. The Blades had 3 players sent off and also their manager Dave Bassett for an inappropriate gesture to the ref (he put the tips of his thumb and forefinger together and moved his arm up and down)! I also recall watching Newcastle Utd playing someone on the telly which was also a battle. There was a lot of diving going on. Same old Ities always cheating!
I think Notts County won the competition that year. How times have changed.
Former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes has left his role as Oldham boss after just 31 days.
Only won 1 out of 7.
Poor form and weak manager
Good win by the Blades.
Leeds players arguing with each other at the end. I think they have lost the plot and it will be nice to see them spend another year in the Championship!
They were by far the better team but no finishing quality. Leeds will go up. Play good passing footy.
City took a while to over come the swans.
I thought Leeds played really well but that’s the way it goes in football. You don’t always get what you deserve. Sheffield United are in the driving seat now and aren’t dropping many points. They have a tremendous defence. I think they will be difficult to overhaul but it’s not over yet.
Raheem Stirling still diving and he wonders why so many people dislike him. Role model? My arse.
Ha ha ha. I like it when someone states the truth.
He's another TWAT
A good win for Wales today. Nice start to the Euros.
I see Scotland managed a win away from home against a strong San Marino side.
See England just managed to win.
Even with an IRA sympathiser in the team. Outrageous. You couldn't make it up.
Correct.
Also they won't pick Jack Grelish because he play's in the championship but can forget what league Jack Butland plays in, pick the sympathiser and pick a Chelsea youth team player who has never played for the first team.
Strange way to carry on.
What was the score?
5-1
As much as i don't buy into the hype of the 'team England', and as mentioned above, some baffling selection issues... i can't knock Gareth Southgate for what he's doing. I have no doubt the media will turn on him the moment things look like they aren't going perfectly.
Also, the racist abuse last night... As outdated and ridiculous as that chanting is, i can't help but think we don't help things by blowing it out of all proportion over here... By all means sort it out in our own country, but just treat the likes of Montenegro, Slovakia, Croatia, etc, and their backward supporters, with the contempt they deserve. UEFA won't do anything about it, so just deny them the publicity they crave.
What happened to Gareth Southgate's threat to take his players off the pitch if subjected to racial abuse? Nothing. Just grandstanding as usual.
He should spend more time on things he can do something about like stopping his players abusing the officials, "f**k off ref" every time a decision goes against them and cheating by diving whenever they "feel contact" or mostly when there is no contact at all.
It’d be smashing if Southgate youthful team could play in a more Corinthian spirit but the main thing for me is they’re winning, scoring lots of goals and maybe most importantly don’t have anyone called Terry, Ferdinand, Lampard (!) or especially Neville playing for them
What about Batty. Remember him, could only pass backwards or sideways!
I don't rate Jordan Henderson either although in this age of stats he is always leading the table when it comes to telling the ref to F*** Off, closely followed by Harry "one of our own" Kane. And, of course, that poor little Raheem Stirling is top of the stats in falling over for no apparent reason!
