Interesting Thread, Rudolph's quote is spot on.
Keep it simple, comply, enjoy, drink beer:D

I personally find Pertex quite effective. If it gets so bad that it's not then I just get off the hill. It works fine for me, apart from in some races where "waterproof" is stipulated (of course, there's no such thing really but we won't get into that debate again).
I do have (claimed) "waterproof kit" for the odd race where it's stipulated but never take it when I go out on my own - I take Pertex.
So there. :p
So, I did Settle Hills last night and father I have a confession, (it has been 40 years since my last confession): I didn't satisfy the minimum kit requirements.
Now in mitigation it was my first medium race (or long) and whilst at one level I was aware that Medium / Longs had a minimum kit requirement I hadn't really put the two together. It was a lovely hot day and as I was packing my stuff I had thought of bringing a windshirt but decided not to given nice weather.
I fortunately had a compass in the car, which I put in my shorts pocket, I didn't have a whistle with me, the wife had left the map on the kitchen table, the wife had brought her lovely bright pink fleece lined windshirt which I ran with tied round my waist.
Going back to Ian's original premise of this thread re cheating: I didn't comply with the RO's minimum kit requirement (for which I am truly sorry), but this was down to ignorance and inexperience and I went out of my way to ensure that I didn't gain any sort of advantage (carrying a top far heavier than anybody else was carrying). I don't therefore believe that I was cheating.
I have said 10 Hail Mary's and flailed myself for half an hour over my sunburnt shoulders, but in all seriousness have learnt a lesson and won't turn up at a race unable to satisfy whatever requirements the RO may seek to impose (irrespective of the weather!). The bizarre thing is that for the mid-week evening races that have been my main stay FRs so far I have always had loads of kit in the car.
You are forgiven my son.
For what its worth as someone who's never run the Settle Hills fell race, (to my shame as I live in the shadow of High Hill) but has trotted round the race route a shed load of times I wouldn't have carried anything yesterday, were I running it on my own. I've also lost the plot on race distances - is 7 miles a medium then as i'd have thought that more of a small rather than medium.
PS I was watching small dots of runners throwing themselves off the side of high hill yesterday as I was eating my lunch in our back garden :D
Stolly
Your forgiveness is much appreciated!
In reality (and as previously discussed on this thread) what we would take if running on our own is over-ruled by whatever the RO says, but I came prepared only for what I would take.
High Hill was "fun", let myself go properly for the last 30m and was then pretty spent!
So how come you didn't do it yesterday?
Stolly, is the 3Peaks your standard training run? Are you going for the record for number of 3 Peaks completions in a year or summat?? :D
