Thanks guys!! I'm quite confident on my nav skills and I'm glad you've said it's on the easier end of the spectrum for a long, probably the best way to start & if (hopefully not) I do go wrong, I know I need to sharpen up my skills

This will also be my first 'long' race, and I'm really looking forward to it...
To be honest I've been surprised in my first couple of races that I've finished so far up the field (in the top 25-30%)... obviously nowhere near the real front runners but still pretty good in my eyes for a novice... (although I must say the general level in fell-racing is far, far higher than local road race events, where I'd regularly hit top 5 or 10 no problem..)
But looking at my expected time for this one, and the past results, I think this will be a bit of a step up, and will show me a bit more realistically where I really stand in the grand scheme of things...
If I run the ideal race I'd be astounded if I even scraped into the top half on this one... if things go wrong and my navigation lets me down, I dread to even think....
Find a Pennine (black/red/yellow) or Dark Peak (mainly brown) and stick with him/her for the whole race :)
You will be a lot higher up than me Travs, haha! I do 50% at best in fell races at the mo, sometimes around 70% depending how I race on the day...I guess there's only one way to find out ;)
Thanks to organiser, marshals, MR & others involved. Had a cracking day out. Spent the first 10 miles running well, hanging around top 25, but then got dropped like a bad habit twice & ended up 44th. Perhaps I should learn a little about endurance & pacing...
I'd echo the comments above, superbly organised with a minimum of fuss...
A bit gutted today... was running fine, coming off the final summit sat comfortably in about 50th-60th with nobody in sight behind, and less than 2 miles to go... unfortunately missed a fork in the footpath, and when I finally hit the road I was a good km or so west of the correct road crossing, resulting in a miserable trudge up the road...
On studying the final results, I was sat in 57th and the error cost me approx. 9 minutes and 27 places, ended up 84th in 2hr34...
On reflection if offered my finishing time and position before the race I'd have snapped their hand off, but disappointed to let slip what would have been a great result for me in my 3rd race...
I also ran well for the 1st 10-12 miles, but the penultimate climb up from the river crossing did it for me, i desperately hung on due to the thought of a sub 2:30 finish, but need more miles and hills in the legs..
After the New Allotments? You are not the first to miss that right turn! It's important to study the map and know what turns are coming. Probably true for many races.
yes I made the sharp right above New Allotments, but it was the fork after that... by the time I'd realised my error, I was down at a farm road junction. had I got the map out I would have seen that a sharp right would put me back on track,with only a couple of minutes lost, but stupidly I powered straight on down the hill...
To New Mills?
Luckily I wasn't as far off course as New Mills... I finally hit the road adjacent to the little reservoir about midway between New Mills and Hayfield... The fork I missed was at Foxholes Clough...
Ah ya, know exactly where you mean. As you say if you had not gone down that long straight hill and turned right instead you would not have been so bad. Bit of a gutter you were so close to the end when you went wrong.
For miles last year I had a right battle with a young lady, I was faster on the climbs but she was faster on the downhills. On the long descent from big stone she had to keep stopping as she was unsure of where to go as I cought up I was shouting out directions to her. She beat me by quite a bit in the end.
Nice to lose my "navigational cockup" virginity without it being too serious though ...!
Plenty to build on for next year, if I can avoid going wrong, and hopefully shave some running time off with some more experience and endurance, could be looking at a decent time...

Good luck Daz it's an enjoyable race. The run up Mill Hill and onto Kinder seems to take an age, even more so in the mist....
Looking to recce this, probably tomorrow.
Any tips on where to park - I don't know Hayfield at all but the OS gives a car park in town centre just S. of bridge?
Scratch that, I can see on StreetView it's the car park that my daughter ended up in after one DofE. Looks fine
Route advice - looks like (on the map on the Hayfield website)the route off Edale Cross is not a marked path - follow walls to stream junction, then strike almost due S. up to the path running W. to South Head.
Alternatives look like a loop around towards Brown Knoll(path) or all the way down Oaken Clough and then up Dimpus Clough- is there a check point around South Head?

You can usually park for free on Valley Road along which the Downfall race finishes just before heading into the park.
Park on the road where the scout hut is and you are straight at the start of the Trog route.
When you get to Edale Cross, go straight ahead over the track and follow the broken down wall. As the old wall starts to bear right you will see a trod over the wall leading down to the valley.At the bottom of the hill cross the stream, then go up the hill until you reach a stile.Quote:

Had a fab gentle trot round yesterday; parked in the public car park and made it back in 3hrs58, with nav, dog, stops for snacks and photos I was happy with that. Looking at last year's finishers, I still woudn't have been last(not quite) even at recce pace which is encouraging(my moving time was 3:37)

All the way round with dry feet too; not at all typical.
Found the drop off Edale Cross, thanks, the trod is pretty clear at the moment - but it's a steep pull back up to the track to the Bridleway isn't it! Could have made a couple of smarter choices with route around Swine's Back and the hill after Peep O'Day but that's what recce is for.
Now just need to work out how to get back to Start without risking life+limb with the traffic on the bridge

When you come off the fells down the road, crossing the road to/from New Mills, I think you go straight on. The road you are on then comes almost adjacent to the main road in Hayfield, with the bridge. Stay on your left-hand road and as it curves away there is an alley-way, follow this over a footbridge, and this leads you out onto the back end of the finishing field near the scout hut.
I hope that makes sense, memory is a little hazy as it was nearly two years ago, but you certainly don't need to go on the main road in Hayfield centre.

Great day out today, many thanks to RO, marshalls, Scouts and Mountain Rescue. Came home in 3:20 after a slow start; our trio decided to split up after Lantern Pike but unfortunately our slower member subsequently missed CPs and cut short, getting in before the two of us.
Despite a thorough recce, had a significant 'navigational moment' when a bunch of us nearly ended up at Kinderlow Cavern instead of Edale Cross. In fairness, visibility couldn't have been much more than 50m at the time
Still, mistakes corrected are part of the fun.
Great event, good organisation, great catering. Well done Hayfield - and all for a fiver!

That was the only "fell" section of the course so it's a shame.
But if you are just doing it as a day out then I'd recommend doing the route Noel sent out.
My second time on the Trog yesterday, the first one was in 2018 when it dropped into the Upper Sett valley as mentioned above. Now there are two, mile long sections of flagstones which are horrid. As the ground has dried out a little, fortunately I opted for Scott RC's rather that proper fell shoes and my choice made the slabs more bearable.
Ninety-two entrants this year which included nine from CVFR who had made the race one of their club championship counters. A cool, breezy and overcast day made for perfect race conditions but the initial toil up to Lantern Pike still induced a dab on. Fast running to the Hayfield/Glossop road crossing and then over a mile of runnable slabs to Mill Hill. Once on the Edge full concentration is required around to the Downfall and on to Kinder Low as a fall here will almost certainly result in a nasty gritstone abrasion. Down to Edale Cross and then the second mile long stretch of slabs which for the most part are downhill and were causing my calf a bit of jip. I lost a lot of time on these, as I was taking it steady, so when I looked behind at the South Head checkpoint there was a train of about eight starting the climb to the top. I legged it down the other side, on softer ground, to the Hayfield/Chinley road crossing. I was not looking forward to the climb up to the Big Stone but I managed to run it all apart from the last few feet to the checkpoint. I think I had bad memories on my mind from 2018 when it was roasting hot. I picked up a few places and never saw those behind again. As I reached the end of the walled bridleway from New Allotments I was catching a runner. I was about 20 yards behind him as he went though the gate but he stopped and politely held it for me. There is a path junction immediately after the gate and I realised that he didn't have a clue which way to go!
I said thanks and overtook him and within a few yards fell flat on my face in a dampish peaty puddle. I felt a pain in my leg and could see that my right calf had cramped up solid. This other runner stopped and asked if I was OK which I said I was and he set off. I rubbed/massaged my calf and waggled my foot for about 30 seconds which loosened it off and then gingerly got to my feet finding that it was working OK so carried on. I caught this other runner up again as we dropped into Foxholes Clough and he was slowing me up but as we ran across the final fields to Hayfield I didn't have the heart to overtake him as he had lost time stopping to see if I was OK and he was at least 20 years younger than me so no category threat! When we hit that steep concrete road down into Hayfield I eased off fully to protect the calf.
The race was won by Harry Holmes of Matlock AC in a new course record of 1:49:12 breaking Joe Oldfield's time by over 10 minutes! The first lady was Emily Cowper-Coles of Dark Peak, 7th overall, in 2:04:04 also a new course record smashing Imogen Jones time by over 22 minutes!
I broke no records but finished 26th overall, 1st M60 in 2:33:23 and 4 minutes slower than in 2018. Another well organised Hayfield event with sandwiches and tea included in the £8 entry fee . What's not to like, oh yes, those bloody flagstones!

Kinder Trog was my third ever fell race way back in 2015... and my first "long"
