you lot are funny tonight...when can we all meet up for a run and attendence at a live poetry reading please ....washed down with lots of snecklifterand old tom ale of course!!!!!!!!!!!!!....my laptop smells as if its going to blow up its been on that long tonight........oh dear, all in the name of art!!!!
I remember having to recite this poem when I was at Primary school.
WHERE the pools are bright and deep,
Where the grey trout lies asleep,
Up the river and over the lea,
That 's the way for Billy and me.
Where the blackbird sings the latest,
Where the hawthorn blooms the sweetest,
Where the nestlings chirp and flee,
That 's the way for Billy and me.
Where the mowers mow the cleanest,
Where the hay lies thick and greenest,
There to track the homeward bee,
That 's the way for Billy and me.
Where the hazel bank is steepest,
Where the shadow falls the deepest,
Where the clustering nuts fall free,
That 's the way for Billy and me.
Why the boys should drive away
Little sweet maidens from the play,
Or love to banter and fight so well,
That 's the thing I never could tell.
But this I know, I love to play
Through the meadow, among the hay;
Up the water and over the lea,
That 's the way for Billy and me.
I knew there was another one I'd been working on tonight up them hills: -
Black cows, moonless night.
Mind away with the haikus.
Runner gets big shock!
just cos i like blake and the magical element to his work......
How sweet I roamed
How sweet I roam'd from field to field,
And tasted all the summer's pride
'Til the prince of love beheld
Who in the sunny beams did glide!
He shew'd me lilies for my hair
And blushing roses for my brow;
He led me through his garden fair,
Where all his golden pleasures grow.
With sweet May dews my wings were wet,
And Phoebus fir'd my vocal rage
He caught me in his silken net,
And shut me in his golden cage.
He loves to sit and hear me sing,
Then, laughing, sports and plays with me;
Then stretches out my golden wing,
And mocks my loss of liberty.

X runner....what a lovely poem and I loved the image of a young boy reciting it :-)

Have you read THAT poem by Auden.
(Blame Freckle if you think its rude:)
A few of Omar Khayyam's Quatrains. Found this book rummaging through a load of stuff my Nan was going to jumble sale for Cancer Research. Judged it by its cover - a lovely old (1898) guilded hardback - and wasn't disappointed.
Has a wonderful sense of embracing the present; with talk of wine, women and song. This is a whole book of the stuff! What a guy!:cool:

Behold, the dawn arises.
Rejoice in the present moment with a cup of crimson wine in your hand.
As for honour and fame, let that brittle glass be dashed to pieces against the earth.
The march of springs and autumns sweep the leaves from our life's tree.
Drink wine, friend, for the wise have wisely said,
"Life is a poison, and wine its antidote."
Give me a jug of wine, a book of verses, a loaf of bread, and a little idleness.
If with such store I might sit by your dear side in some lonely place, I should count myself happier than a king in his kingdom.
Hey Softie! you thought you couldn't hack it on this thread! That's great.
The last verse could be the template for the proposed gathering of the Fell Poets Society - which I think should be the night before a race, otherwise it'd be the Dead Poet's Society and that's already been done!
'Life is a poison, and wine its antidote' I'll drink to that! Count me in for inaugural Fell Poets Society meet please :cool:
I hadn't read that article before, cheers. It is interesting what we find erotic and what seems pornographic...possibly too early in the day for that kind of debate though!:)
I have to say that I prefer the suggestiveness of Hattersley's poem to the 'leave nothing to the imagination' style of Auden's but anyway, how about a bit of Tennyson.
The Eagle
He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ringed with the azure world, he stands.
The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.
Glad you liked it. Will drip-feed some more of the same into this thread from time to time!:)

Christy Moore - Voyage
I am a sailor, you're my first mate
We signed on together, we coupled our fate
Hauled up our anchor, determined not to fail
For the hearts treasure, together we set sail
With no maps to guide us we steered our own course
Rode out the storms when the winds were gale force
Sat out the doldrums in patience and hope
Working together we learned how to cope
Life is an ocean and love is a boat
In troubled water that keeps us afloat
When we started the voyage, there was just me and you
Now gathered round us, we have our own crew
Together we're in this relationship
We built it with care to last the whole trip
Our true destination's not marked on any charts
We're navigating to the shores of the heart

Close your eyes, listen to the lyrics, and if a tear comes to your eye, you'll know exactly how wonderfully happy I am at the moment.
