Fellsman route advice
I have done this event three times before, been succesfull twice with a time of 24hours. Each time when crossing Fleetmoss I have descended then followed a mase of fences/walls.
What do the people who seee more of the route in daylight do , follow the fence straight across Fleeetmoss accepting the bogs. Or is there a better choice?

go on ian share! ive been toying with having another go so would be interested in alternative route choices

Re: Fellsman route advice
Go on then Ian please divulge the path through the dark stuff. Training over black hill is my ground but would rather not get too friendly with it after 40 miles.
-
Re: Fellsman route advice
Last year I went through the bogs full on.............. and its definitely not the quick route :D. Great fun though.

It's a lot easier now this section gets crossed in daylight!
If it's dry the fastest route's follow the fence. If it's not dry some still do this (it's straight forward, but mucky - sometimes pays off).
FWIR ... Avoiding the bog involves following the road round to the right, and then cutting back towards the watershed.
But your real problem is getting across Middle Tongue!
-
Re: Fellsman route advice
Thanks Rudolf, done the one where you drop down the road to the right. Yeah I have to agree that from the watershed the route to middle tongue is not easy.
considering just accepting the bogs and following the fence away from the check point . Just hope that I get grouped with some one that can pull me out.

:o Sorry couldn't resist it.
Yes I'll pass it on as I've done for others. I'll dig it out and post it or PM it later:D

Re: Fellsman route advice

the target is to get THROUGH Fleet Moss before grouping;)
-
Re: Fellsman route advice
Fleetmoss and middle tongue are definately worth checking out - for what its worth having done both I would go south following a four wheel drive track which brings you out at the wall, and then follow that to the wall junction before middle tongue - after that a mix of bearing and trog....definately best recced
-
Re: Fellsman route advice
Thanks Ian will heed your warning and aim to be beyond Fleetmoss before grouping.;)
Saz tyhanks givees me food for thought when pouring over the maps, how far down is the track?

I'll do the route for you this pm:o
-
Re: Fellsman route advice
Difficult to describe - but when you leave the checkpont I go south/east but not on the road and you end up running down a little gully, out of which you pick up a four wheel buggy track (well you did last year) thats not on the map, this then runs nicely to very near the wall corner, which you then join and head eastish along beneath the tussocks and bog
-
Re: Fellsman route advice
thanks for the info saz, looking at seeing what its like towards end of february. shoule be wet enough then....
-
Re: Fellsman route advice
Having checked my notes
its south from the CP down a gully on a trod which then turns into a 4w drive trod and takes you to the wall corner
Let me know any recce dates as a run over there is always good

Re: Fellsman route advice
If you're good(!!!) in wet peat then blast straight across with purpose and pace. When you can make out the argocat tracks off to the left, head for them as the climb up is more direct and on easier ground.
Middle Tongue has some handy secret groughs if you can find 'em.
-
Re: Fellsman route advice
I would agree - straight across Fleet Moss on the old fence line to pick up the wall corner.
As posted earlier I don't think Fleet Moss is the real problem it's getting down to Hell Gap from Middle Tongue where the fun really begins.
-
Re: Fellsman route advice
The horror of Middle Tongue to Hell Gap was burried deep in my subconsous , until I decided upon this thread.
Considering a raft for a recce!!
I hope that I can have enough strength to put all your good advice into stud marks.

Although a tad peaty the new route (as of 3 years ago) unless it's changed back is straight forward. once you've got to Stake moss (Hell Gap CP) you just follow the track down:confused:
-
Re: Fellsman route advice
Ian you are right the route from hell gap is straight along the track to the Cray check point. I remember last year developing a bout of terrets induced by the peat from Middle Tongue to Hell Gap.
I have not recieved a PM . I think thats what you mean. This computer stuff all new to me :confused

Re: Fellsman route advice
Thanks Ian , have not figured out how to reply to a private message.......
It turns out that the girlfriend may be doing this years event as she has pointed out that it is my year to have the off spring. Will still do the training with her , thanks once again for all the advice.:)

Re: Fellsman route advice
This is going to be my first Fellsman, I have been reading all of your comments from this and previous years forums
but cannot see any grid refs for the checkpoints. I understand that they will be in the handbook but I woud like to start having a few runs up there shortly, could anyone help?

Re: Fellsman route advice
Thanks Toreador, I must have gone blind, I thought that I had read through all of the previouus posts. I have been advised by Juliette from the Fellsman that some of the checkpoints will be altered this year but I guess that this is the case most years. At least it gives me something to work on.
-
Re: Fellsman route advice
Damn - I've just covered my map in red circles!
Did she say when the changes will be published (I assume they'll be coming with the event manual)?
-
Re: Fellsman route advice
Yes, she said they would be in the manual, however she did say that if I really needed them she would see what she could do.
This is the explanation regarding the change of checkpoints "These points have been updated this year due to some changes enforced by the right to roam legislation."

Re: Fellsman 2010
Woo hoo
Got the handbook through the post yesterday.
Had a dream last night about being force fed cake when I wanted to get on with the run. Is this a premonition of things to come?
Who else is doing it?
-
Re: Fellsman 2010
Mine arrived yesterday too. Not sure if I'll be able to go now. Have to see how injury progresses.
-
Re: Fellsman 2010
I've got my handbook too :)
Can't wait.
Shit or bust for 16 hours this year :D ;)
-
Re: Fellsman 2010
I entered online last week. Not had a handbook yet, but had my number emailed to me, so looks like I'm doing it now! I've yet to run more than 25 or so miles in one day, so it should be intetesting. Survival I think is the word.
-
Re: Fellsman 2010
I've had the handbook through as well. number 136. This will be my longest run yet
It does say to not walk the course/recce before because some is on private land. Which parts can I recce then as it seems on here a few are recceing the fleet moss and hell gap parts if not all of it in stages
-
Re: Fellsman 2010
Would it be too late to consider entering this?
-
Re: Fellsman 2010
The website says they have 300+ entries as of a few days ago... 450 limit.
