Tanky's Trog was my first proper fell race back in 1991. Just filled my entry in for this year - doubt I'll get anywhere near the time I did it in 19 years ago!

Hello Folks...
sorry for the delay in making this decision but finally after some good discussions the decision has been made to move the Snake check point from the pub, to Lady Clough below Birchin Clough SK 1080 9145. This means that the route will run down Lady Clough so there is no (or little) need to run down the A57. There are several access points into Lady Clough from the A57 between Doctor's Gate and Birchin Clough however I beleive that from North Grain the access point is a little down the road. There will be a Swift river crossing team at the bottom of Ashop Clough or alternatively there is a path (of sorts!) down the East side of the river which brings you to the foot bridge at the bottom of Fairbrook Naze.
The reason for positioning it here is to ensure runners are diverted off the road as much as possible whilst also keeping parking options available for marshals and support vehicles. We will review it again next year!
I will be sending an email to all entrants to advise of the change but please can you pass along to whoever you feels needs to know!!!!!
Thanks
Clair
Tankys Trog
Clair I believe you need to be clearer with your description, I agree that there is little need to run down the road but unless you say that the road is out of bounds some will still run down it as it will be quicker.
So are saying you MUST leave the road at SK 1004 9290 and follow the path to the CP and river crossing? or is this an option?
Hi Ian
I'm going to stick my neck out and say YES runners must use Lady Clough however if runners 'find' themselves further down then there will be no one penalising them for missing the top of the clough. I will put a crossing marshal on at Doctors Gate to direct runners to the style. Does this seem ok?
Clair - Ran up and down through the woods from Lady Clough to the bottom of Upper North Grain on a recce last year - and it is definitely alot slower than the road - the route should be complusory for fairness. Maybe the checkpoint can be a bit upstream from Birchin Clough to further discourage road usage? Good move though to cut out the road - more in keeping.
Not done Tanky's but have done 4 Inns (cp at Drs Gate then another at Snake Inn) several times.
My view is that the road is scary but undoubtedly faster you can get a reet peg on down the gentle downhill; Through the woods along the clough is much, much nicer, however and would be a lot more in keeping with the event.
It would have to be mandated, though, 'cos niceness would lose out over speed for most folks.

Has Grouse entered yet.
Like I said before last year. There is a better way than the road. The tunnel.
Id better see if im free that day.
Yes, to keeping road section out, BUT - I think the organisers should decide the exact route, give GRs in race info and explain safety issues - IT SHOULDN'T BE UP TO THE FORUM TO SORT NOR SUGGEST ROUTES - Or it's fell racing/organising by proxy!
I'm fed up with the Coalition approach to life anyroad!!!
Easy Tiger! The beauty of Tanky's is that there is (or was) no route. It is a navigational challenge as well for those that go and find the best way through. I think Clare has used the experience of experienced forumites well to rule out the use of 2.5 miles of tarmac in a fell race. Long may the choice aspect of Tanky's continue!
Steady on BB. I've been chatting to Clair about this for a while via Email as a follow on from when we (Plumbums etc) organised the route.
I was just clearing up a vague point, I reckon you have more than a glass of that "Cab Savi";):w00t:
