No doubt there will be new cockney rhyming slang for the word liar!
I see that Jamie Carragher, that upstanding character who was caught on camera spitting at a 14 year old girl, has come out in defence of Harry Maguire.
Ha ha ha harry lier said he feared for his life, not as much as the coppers did i would suggest.
Let's hope it's a fair trial.
3Ps
Piss Poor Performance.
And a man sent off.
Only goal was a penalty.
I didn’t realise the Premier League had started and Leeds had played ;)
How would you punish the numptys that shame the England shirt, team and our country??
How does hang, draw and quartering sound? Maybe worse if there’s an investigation and they’re found to be guilty
I was thinking about giving them a pay rise and making them play a season at derby
National squad tonight was like watching grass grow in February.
That's what happens when the manager is a "yes man" like Gareth Southgate who keeps putting his arms around his precious little things, and probably reads them bedtime stories, instead of putting a firework up their arses.
It's a bit more complicated than that, though, isn't it? For example, I'm sure Roy Keane was very good at putting a firework up the arse of a player, but his managerial record speaks for itself. (I'm thinking of a word that rhymes with 'tight'.)
Speaking of Roy Keane's managerial record, I'm reminded of the time in the late 80s (I think) when Mick Hucknall (out of Simply Red) played for Fulchester United (alongside, if I'm not mistaken, Shakin' Stevens, as well, of course, as Billy The Fish), as chronicled in Viz magazine. As I recall, the lad Hucknall (out of Simply Red) had quite an explosive start to the game, only to fade significantly shortly afterwards, missing numerous easy opportunities to score, prompting someone in the crowd to opine "in a bizarre recreation of his musical career, Mick Hucknall's considerable early promise has been followed up by a series of lacklustre disappointments".
In contrast to the likes of Roy Keane, Brian Clough was able to put his arm around those who would respond positively to having an arm put around them, and put a firework up the arse of those who would respond positively to having a firework up their arse (which included Keane himself, of course). Unfortunately, Mr Keane seemed only to learn part of the lesson.
Mind you, I couldn't stand Brian Clough in his pre-Forest days. Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.
I think Southgate, and managers in general, cop far too much criticism, particularly where our national team is concerned.
Look at the calibre of managers we've had in recent times.... Capello, Eriksson, (arguably) Hodgson, i could go on.
Did Capello suddenly become an awful manager after a couple of poor games with England? If you listen to the media and large sections of the publicc you'd think so.... or is it the usual story... that we far too easily follow the media line that we have the "best league in the world" and therefore the best crop of young talent in the world.
When in fact we produce decent quality youngsters and teams... not world beaters... there isn't much separating us from the likes of Denmark and others that we feel we should be superior to.... and by the same token there's a bit of a gap between ourselves and the likes of Croatia, France, Holland, etc (although not necessarily a huge gulf).
There are such small margins in football, particularly cup competitions like the world cup... we were the width of a post from being out on penalties to Colombia in the last world cup, and had that happened, Southgate would have been pilloried and sacked almost immediately. However we went on to a semi final without ever playing really well, and Southgate and the players came back as "heroes"...
I think the sole reason we have looked so promising in the past couple of years, is that the world cup result (rather than the actual performances) afforded Southgate some breathing space from the media, and allowed a bit of sorely-missed continuity in the England job... it still amazes me that nobody takes note of Manchester United who ultimately dominated for years because they allowed Ferguson to build an empire.... nobody gives their managers a chance (not even Manchester United, amazingly enough!).
I don't really follow football and can't find any recent figures but only 25% or so of premier league players are eligible to play for England.
Been a good day for culture what with the Pre-Raphaelite work on another thread and then Billy the Fish getting a nod in the post above
That sounds about right. Look at any given Champions League set of midweek fixtures, and it's rare to be able to throw together 11 English players from the four English starting lineups.
Which in itself is no issue at all in footballing terms... until everyone throws their dummy out of the pram and wonders why England can't dominate at international level, when our best domestic teams are generally propped up by overseas players.
I'm perhaps being a little unfair on Southgate, but I have a few observations.
Tyrone Mings - he made 17 Premier League appearances for Bournemouth in 4 seasons. He was initially brought in to the squad for a year ago on the basis of a few months on loan at Villa in the Championship.
Villa connection?
Eric Dier - even Spurs don't seem to know where and what he is as a player. I tend to think he's just a useless big lump who is out of his depth in the Premier League.
Joe Gomez - he looks like a good player in the making but he hasn't got there yet. He's error prone, a bit like Stones.
He's probably also looking better because he's playing in he best team in England alongside possibly the best centre-half in the world at the moment.
Meanwhile James Tarkowski at Burnley received his first cap 30 months ago in March 2018. He's never been called back in to the squad since.
I'd argue that Van Dyke aside, he's been the most consistent high performing centre-half in the Prem during that time.
I can't remember the last time he made a mistake and he played all the Prem games last season.
In Midfield we had Kalvin Phillips from Leeds, perhaps a great prospect but a bit early.
Declan Rice from West Ham who scraped survival and he was an ever present in a pretty ropey West Ham team - I've seen him a few times and he's been ineffective and I sense he's over-rated as he's a West Ham youngster.
James Ward-Prowse - well he's had a decent year for Southampton so I wouldn't be over critical on his selection.
Harry Winks - hasn't cut it at Spurs after some early promise.
Another Burnley player Ashley Westwood never gets a mention. I wouldn't take any of the above over Westwood.
The team against Denmark had a back 4, with a right back playing left back. It had a midfield 3 of sitters, and we had 3 attacking players who's current form is questionable.
Sterling and Kane are top class on their day, but particularly Kane has been struggling.
It wasn't a good looking team or squad.
I take on board what Travs says. I think our players aren't as good as they often get hyped up to be. But I think you have to pick on form and/or quality. I don't think Southgate is doing that.
I don't think Southgate is using any Villa bias with reference to Mings... in fact, most Villa fans i know seem to think the opposite... they say he is bitter about the way he was treated by their fans when he left them, and that is the reason why he won't pick Jack Grealish.
Personally i think both theories are off the mark.
Totally agree with you there. Blatant cheat, and not much end product, given that everything goes through him at Villa...
MARCELO BIELSA SIGNS NEW CONTRACT:D:cool:
Saw him going into Costa in Wetherby the other week when we’d stopped during a bike ride. At the age of 50 I really shouldn’t get so thrilled about it.
He obviously does understand a fair amount of English as shown when he bollocks his translator for getting it wrong.
Nervous about tomorrow already.
Mason Greenwood is at it again.
Last week kicked out of the England camp for breaching the rules.
This week is him on Nitrous Oxide gas.
But its ok because he is sorry AGAIN.
I'm not a Spurs fan but am pleased for Gareth Bale who has found his way back to the premier league.
A class act.
Mighty CCFC on tele tonight...
Very entertaining 2nd half. Sky Blues off and running...
Every team has played 1 or 2 games in the Premier league without a single draw.
Plenty of goals too.
Why are premier league clubs wining about lack of spectators?
On average the fans only account for 13% of revenue.
7 clubs it's less than 10p in the pound go on players wages.
I'm finding this BLM gimmick of taking the knee at the start of Premier League matches a little tedious, especially when I look at the players and the majority are black, very good, and doing quite nicely from football, thankyou.
Sky sports news is constantly airing a BLM advert between bulletins, no doubt under instructions from its PR department.
Not a word about the deaths of workers and the black lives that are held in slavery to build the stadia for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
I wonder how many Premiership players who "take the knee" will refuse to play in the 2022 World Cup on principle because BLM?
I wonder if Sky Sports will refuse to broadcast the World Cup on principle because BLM?
Or is it that those black lives don't matter as much or are they the wrong sort of black?
I don't know but what I do know is that it reeks of double standards.
I was disappointed that my club Burnley didn't show a mark of respect for the copper that lost his life last week.
I share your sentiments above Llani. Seems shallow gesturing to me. I'd ask how many of them will refuse to play a match in Eastern Europe where they get constant monkey chants?
On a seperate note, that penalty against Spurs was appaling. The game is going down the pan at a rate of knots.
I saw a stat this weekend that suggest in the early 90's, most top Premier League teams were getting between 1 and 3 penalties a season on average... last year it suggested Liverpool/Man Utd/etc got closer to 20...
I'm not sure how accurate the stat was, but it's an indication of where the game is heading... absolute desperation to find something wrong with everything... unfortunately this is what happens when money takes precedence over the spectacle of the sport itself...
I even see it creeping into my own club... on the CCFC forum, rather than being pleased that we are on Sky again this friday and hopefully will be a decent match, more people seem to be pleased that the Sky appearance means "another £100k in the bank for the club".
Given your club (like all clubs) has zero money coming in through the gate at the moment I'm not surprised some of your fans are pleased about the £100k TV money. It might help them survive a little bit longer.
I think the situation for clubs outside the Premier League is very worrying. I just don't know how they will be able to keep going without fans in the ground. It's another reason I'm glad we got promoted last season.
I wasn't suggesting that there is money to be made off the back of using VAR/technology (although how long before we start to see adverts in the "VAR breaks???"...
More that the ruling bodies appear to be so frightened that they are going to be on the recieving end of a legal case from a club who may feel they have lost out on a promotion/relegation/tv money, due to a wrong decision... so they are trying to tie everything into a black or white decision, with no grey areas.
This doesn't work in football... the handball rules have been shown to be a farce... it's equally impossible with offside... goal-line technology fair enough (when they remember to switch it on of course!).
In reply to a couple of posts above regarding Black Lives Matter etc in football... i'd sooner not get involved in any discussion which involves racism, as there is always someone who will take offence in some way... but yes i wonder what the response will be when the World Cup is on, given that it's common knowledge that it was "bought" with bribery, and the well-publicised issues with immigrant (slave) workers involved in the construction of the stadiums.
I was also a little alarmed this morning to see another BBC feature on racism in football... the alarming aspect was the heavy focus on that England away game in Bratislava a few years back, as "evidence" of footballs racism problem... while that was indeed shocking, i hardly think it is a barometer for the current situation in British football...
Does not owning the ground you play at make any difference though Travs? Presumably Coventry are still having to pay rent to their landlords Birmingham City and will be responsible for the usual match day costs. But they won't have any gate receipts to offset these costs and pay the players.
I do think that the Premier League should support the Football League. If they don't then many if not most of the clubs will inevitably go to the wall.
