just done a 26 mile road circuit with Darth domain starting from Horton. bloomin freezin' and snowing for the last few miles!!
Went out in the snow on my old Alan crosser for a 10 mile circuit around the lanes saw a 4x4 eating a telegraph pole and a bloke in a volvo to timid to drive down of Jeffery hill(chipping side) me thinks he pulled his socks up
when he saw me just glide past!!!
My helmet had a perfect coating of ice as if painted on
Well, that was interesting!
Did a freezing cold 2.5 hours on the race bike this morning, Brixton to Richmond Park, few laps, and back... burst water mains everywhere, so some sketchy icey patches and the bottom of Brixton HIll was a skating rink...
Then I commuted to the fair in birght, cold sunshine... and tonight is started snowing, just as I was leaving the fair to go out for a meal with some friends... I hesitated briefly thinking: if I ride back to Brixton now, I will be fine, not sure about later... So obviously, I set off for Mayfair, had a lovely meal, then found 2 inches of snow had fallen during our meal :-O
Ah well, 20 ins wheels, slick tyres, what could go wrong.. so I started riding, only to find the cars were sliding all over the place... So I ended up walking to Piccadilly, to take the tube, as I didn't fancy a car, or worse, something bigger, slide into me...
Could not get into the station, chocca! So walked to Green Park, to take the Victoria line to Brixton... Victoria line suspended... been told to take the jubilee line to wherever and take a replacement bus... after 15 minutes wait, Jubilee line suspended, been told to take another line to Victoria... after another wait: suspended!
What now? With bike in tow... folded up by now, an old gent tells me to take the 38 bus... so I go above ground, wait ages for said bus which slithers to Victoria... where I have to go around the block and wait ages for the bus replacement service... It took me 2 hours to get from Mayfair to Victoria :-O
Could have walked the whole way to Brixton faster, in heels, in 2 inches of snow!!! Bliddy public transport, makes you realise why you cycle... Just as I am about to get back on the bike, as the road were dead around Victoria, the bus turns up... and slides its way to Brixton... At Brixton I manage to get back on the bike to ride the last mile... as road are much better up here, well, the main bus routes are... 2.5 hours in total of cycling, walking, waiting, more waiting and a bit on the bus...
This will be interesting tomorrow! When all the sludge will be frozen over... I very much doubt I get a ride in...
Seven in the fast group (it was 9 but two bailed out with frozen hands, heh!) - we did about 50 miles out into Kent at a fair pace.
Lots of ice and frost in the verges but if there was any on the road, we managed to miss it.
-3 on the bike computer.
Got a really good chaingang going back over Biggin Hill. Felt like a million dollars in my hot bath with a cup of tea after.
Just an hour on rollers at a cadence of 105av
Got a good sweat on and enjoyed the views from the back window
operation baby nap time turbo - 40 mins yest, just under today (37 min) - watching the lights that indicate sound on the monitor :)
Excellent Ratfink :)
I only managed a heavy legged trip from the garage to work and from work back to the garage today... Mind, I was back from the garage within half an hour this afternoon, so I must have been feeling a tad unpleasant because I was going hard, rather than just feeling whacked... always hard to judge when you are in civvies and have no computer... Not sure why I always feel like going flatout when commuting, but I do...
Is it just me or is the combination of Campag Zonda wheels and Vittoria Open Pave tyres an absolute beast to get on? Worth persevering with though as they're by far the best tyre I've found for the roads round here.
2X20 mins at 350W on the turbo for me this evening.... new favourite self pain infliction song

Commute 28k. Bye that was bloody cold at 6.30am
Still thawing out.
I was cutting wood, no cycling today :( Had planned to go to the velodrome, but need to remove a huge stack of wood from my neighbours woodland, as he wants it cleared... I don't want to loose half a winters worth of free heat :)
Will be chopping and stacking tonight, then more chainsawing to do tomorrow morning and Friday... doesn't look like I will get any cycling in at all this week :-O
Double spin last night, finishing off with a hard-as-possible 20 minute effort, in my case 91-92% MHR ...
Froze into an icicle on the 3-mile ride home.
Still very chilly in the easterly breeze.
Good afternoon ride home just completed it in day light.
Another 28k in the tank.
50 mins 24.3km Zone 1-2 easy ride.... bloody hell it was cold!
12m to work and back, frozen!
Nikalas like your music choice :)
I managed another 40 min in shed today, listened to a right mish mash but finished on kasabian - steady away with a few mini efforts, nowt too intense or structured yet.
More wood cutting, sawing, chopping, stacking for me... in the morning for a couple of hours and in the eve for a couple of hours. My upper body is acheing and tired now, after 3 efforts at it... I had hoped to have done it all by tonight, but another earlyt am stint awaits tomorrow :/
Is going to be dodgy, very icy out there, slow and steady is the way, take care folks!
Thermal balaclava has been dug out:thumbup:
Black ice here, so definitely no ride for me this afternoon, even if I had the time...
In stead I shal clean the bike, take it apart and box it up for a tripette to Spain. Alas, temperatures there are also hardly above zeor, so not sure what to expect, but full winter gear and waterproofs will be packed... as well as MTB shoes and pedals :)
Very icy today going to work, survived though and on the plus side...............no Antelopes:w00t:

something to do until the ice goes!
was a bit put-off by reports of ice on the roads of Kent and Surrey, so no ride.
But I did pick this up:
Attachment 5706
rode on sunday instead of saturday - less ice/freezingness - 22 miles (35km), 670m - took me about 1:45 :-( and thats an improvement over the day when it was gales :)
two hard spin sessions this week: two hours flat out on wednesday evening at high resistance, fairly constant pace just below threshold
one hour last night of intervals. Legs too done-in from night before to really do them properly, but feel ok today ....
120k club ride tomorrow - first ride on the new bike!!
More turbo based fun last night... same 2X20 mins at 350W although I went through the gears during the last minute and finished at 900+W.. my wife thought I was going to come through the floor... debating between road or mtb for ride tomorrow.
Managed 50 mile for my fiftieth birhtday yesterday.
Just down load the garmin and had 3341 foot of climb or 1018 metres
Really enjoyed it, but suffering with lower back ache today.
Haven't got it on actual bikes, although I will be sorely tempted when the Garmin Vector pedals finally come out, but my turbo measures it. Some interesting and slightly scary power facts and figures below...
Sir Chris Hoy’s peak power: 2350 watts+
Shanaze Reade peak power: 1800 watts
Mark Cavendish peak power: 1580 watts
Power required to hold 60kph as man one in a Team Pursuit: 607 watts
Bradley Wiggin’s average power winning National 10-mile title: 476 watts
Lance Armstrong’s estimated average power climbing Luz Ardiden in 2003 Tour de France: 455 watts
Power required to hold 60kph as man four in a Team Pursuit: 389 watts
Chris Anker Sorensen’s average power finishing 44th in Tour de France 2011 Stage 20 Time Trial: 334 watts
Fabian Cancellara’s average power winning 2010 Tour of Flanders: 285 watts
Chris Anker Sorensen’s average power on the “easy” flat Stage 7 of the 2011 Tour de France: 178 watts
eek ....
have you ever tried a 'WattBike'?
They just got one in at the spin studio I go to - I can have a go on it whenever I want. But not sure what I should look for / measure / test!
Suppose I coudl do some sort of power-at-threshold test, that'd be useful ...
Yep, a few times including lab testing on one... gave me a FTP of 370W
Easy test protocol described below... it's for testing outside but works fine on a WattBike.
The first step to getting the most out of a power meter to find your FTP or Functional Threshold Power. FTP is the highest power that you can maintain in a state of sustainable discomfort without fatiguing for approximately one hour. When power exceeds FTP, fatigue will occur much sooner, whereas power just below FTP can be maintained considerably longer. We mentioned anaerobic threshold earlier and FTP correlates strongly to this. Once you’ve found your FTP, your power based training zones can be deduced from it.
Hunter Allen is the author of power training bible, Training and Racing with a Power Meter, a top cycling coach www.PeaksCoachingGroup.com and a genuine power guru. This is his method for determining FTP.
20 minutes moderate paced riding.
X3 60-second 100rpm fast pedaling efforts with 60-second recoveries.
5 minutes moderate paced riding.
5 minutes All Out, “Punch it and Hold It!”
10 minutes moderate paced riding
20 minutes Time Trial on a fairly flat road that allows you to hold a strong and consistent effort. Don’t go out to hard.
10-20 minutes easy paced riding to cool down.
Your average power for the 20-minute Time Trial effort -5% gives your FTP. The 5% is subtracted to account for the fact that FTP is the power you can sustain for 60 minutes but the test was only 20 minutes long. A 60-minute time trial is difficult to pace and a big mental ask so, using a 20-minute effort and making the adjustment, provides an easier but still accurate method.
