Well I did it! :D
Set off up PYG and my whole body felt like jelly. I think I was so worried about not completing it that I already thought of jacking it in at the top of PYG. But I decided to carry on and was kind of hoping I wouldn't make the cut off at Ribblehead, I felt like I wanted to stop and eat something but carried on and got there with just 10mins to spare...which meant I had no excuse not to push on!!! Derby tup passed me at the viaduct and disappeared ahead of me. I have never seen the steep side of Whernside before and it was a bit of a shock that it went on for so long...53 mins to top!
I really suffered with stomach cramps at this point and it took me a while to get to Hill Inn as I was nearly doubled over...thought at this point I wouldn't be able to carry on. :( Still made it to the check point in time and had a few cups of water and the pain went immediately so after a short break decided to carry on. I think I must have had too much glucose and not enough water. Met up with Tussockface on the route up Ingleborough and when we got to the steep bit I seemed to get more energy than I'd had all day. :D I really quite enjoyed the jog all the way back down to Horton hoping to make it in under 5 but just missed it with 5.09. Injury free!Rounded the day off with a few glasses of cider in the marquee then an evening in The Crown, a few large glasses of red and lots of lardy food!
Met lots of great people at the start and during the day. Well done everyone!
Nice chatting with you Stolly, enjoyed reading your PPP Adventure...but please don't display any more pics of me looking like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards!!!
Disco Stan sub 4 hours yesterday then a sub 42min in the Radcliffe 10K today. You have my respect!!
In the race yesterday I struggled down to the finish from Ingleborough. Felt as if half of the field went by. Was pleased to finish in 4.16. Certainly could not race today.
Come on Graham, don't be so modest :).
A few observations from yesterday as a spectator:
1. All the non-British runners really struggled with the rocky initial descent off Ingleborough. Tom Owens flew past Mitja Kosovelj at that point.
2. Knee length, Paula Radcliffe style socks are obviously de rigeur for mountain racing in Europe. I don't know whether they work or not but they look really naff.
3. A few runners were carrying enormous rucksacks. What do they put in them ?
Well done to everyone who completed the race yesterday.
I'm feeling delighted that I managed to get round, given recent injuries and having been uncertain all week whether or not to even bother turning up. I began with the aim of jogging PYG and then probably heading back to retire. As it was, the foot felt OK-ish until after Ribblehead, and although I was limping by Whernside there was no way I was going to bale out from that point. Although my finish time was a painfully slow 5:19, I was happy to have taken part and completed the course. Cramp was never far away after Whernside; but it only really struck on the occasions when I stumbled on a descent.
Saw Merrylegs by the tent, Stringman at the start, Derby Tup in the early stages and Hillbilly at several points up to Ribblehead.
Mrs Stagger shadowed me for 4 hours before slapping me heartily on the back at the summit of Ingleborough and skipping off through the rubble into the distance.
Likewise, met Mountain Goatess at the Hill Inn, but she lived up to her name on the steep stone stepped section, bounding lightly from rock to rock, and I never saw her again.
Yesterday evening I was hit by a craving for Chinese food. Mrs Tussockface made the mistake of leaving the order to me, a man who had just run 24 miles and not eaten anything more substantial than Jelly Babies since breakfast. As I tottered in carrying a mountain of noodles, duck, sweet and sour king prawns, beef satay, etc etc, I realised that there was a fourth peak to conquer: a banquet for six between two of us. Sportident can't give a split on this one, but I can report eventual success.
:D
I've uploaded a few photos to my gallery;

Most were taken from the summit ridge of Whernside with a predominance for Pudsey Runners!

Just realised (by obscure means) that a guy I talked to on the way up Whernside - I mean the lower sections, when I was still capable of speech - was BritNick. He seemed to keep stopping to record instalments of a video diary. I'm glad he wasn't doing interviews.
Glad to have met you, anyway, BritNick. I was the wheezing, limping chap in red and white hoops, carrying a bottle of fluorescent pink sport drink.
Great day, great race, great organisation, I returned to running this year after a few years out, last did this in 2000, 4hrs 11min I was hoping to get within 15 mins of that time, but beat it by 8 mins, back in 4hrs 3min after a seemingly endless drop from the last check,I ran to my HR monitor on the faster sections which seemed to help greatly as I had a good bit left for the climbs, cramp just started to nip in the last half mile, looking forward to next year and hopefully getting rid of the odd 3 mins finally a BIG thanks to all those unknown targets in the near distance who kept me going.
