Allow an extra 10 minutes for your journey.
A recent landslide has caused the closure of Lee Wood Road which means limited access to Heptonstall from Heptonstall Rd (to the south). In order to avoid congestion through the village there is a 2-3 mile diversion in place taking you up Mytholm Steeps (an adventure in itself) and approaching Heptonstall from the north via Colden and Slack.
Ideally you should plan to approach Heptonstall from this direction anyway but if you insist on approaching from Burnley Rd, the diversion from the turning circle on the A646 will be well sign posted and marshaled.
See the route on Google maps
We will have the use of a large field for car parking (£1) - the route suggested above avoids the road closure and the narrow cobbled lane through the village.
Hope you can share this new with any club mates who may be running Heptonstall on Sunday - we will provide any further updates on this thread and on
http://www.heptonstallfellrace.org.uk/
Thanks for helping us to keep the traffic moving!!
I noticed the road closed yesterday on the Hobble and I wondered if it was temporary or longer term. The Lea Wood downhill was still open though so is that clear as far as Draper Corner ? (just thinking of after the race when people are returning home)

Re: Heptonstall Fell Race
Really looking forward to this as it gets closer. Just one question, obviously it's different for everyone but general opinions welcome- mud claws or wave harriers?

Hi Alf - Lee Wood Road is closed both ways for 4 months - I reckon the cars you saw may have been accessing homes - Heptonstall is like Piccadilly Circus definitely best avoided - we have even been offered Draper Corner as a car park if the field fills up!

Mudclaws.

The route has large sections of moor (boggy at times but currently drier than of late) inter-spersed with jeep tracks and trods - studs will help as there's some steep slippy stuff on the descents - I would agree on Mudclaws (or anything else with a aggressive grip) - X-talons would be fine too. You might also need flippers and arm bands for the new river crossing:)

If you're heading over from Lancashire just head over the scenic routes;
Long Causeway from Cliviger/Burnley, or Widdop Road from Colne/Trawden and drop into the village from the North.
If you're coming in from Manchester, Rochdale, Oldham and the South, approach via Todmorden, join A646 for Hebden Bridge, at the SHELL GARAGE, 1m after the town centre, turn left, up CROSS STONE ROAD; this steep, narrow lane eventually becomes Great House Road, and Crossley New Road; turn right when you get to GREAT ROCK at Eastwood Land, to arrive in Staups Lane at Blackshawhead. From Blackshwead take the COLDEN road, past the NEW DELIGHT PUB, until you arrive at Heptonstall (through Slack)

NEW WADING SECTION - RIVER CROSSING AT 10 MILE MARK - HEBDEN WATER, HARDCASTLE, CRAGS, A THE FOOT OF THE BIG ASCENT TO TURN HILL......
Hopefully it won't be up to your wotnots wharfee (depending on how long your legs are) knee deep and quite wide though; I reckon someone's bound to take a bath, there are some submerged, smooth, slimey stones for the un-suspecting wader trying to splash across too quickly. Take it easy an you'll keep your wotnots dry. Note to self; find a photographer to capture the bath time fun.
Don't forget you cross at your own risk - if wading across rivers is nt for you, there's a bridge 100m down stream that adds about 2 mins to your time - but no-where near as refreshing on tired legs

Don't fancy gettin' mi legs wet if the temperature's like it's been the last couple o' days, think I'll take the bridge option, unless I'm already sh!t up to th' eyeballs then I'll be ready for a dip!

Wharfee, it's not very muddy till after there! If you look at my pics on Fb from yesterday's recci, you can see its not far between the bridges, it's worth the detour! C C, by the way Happy Belated birthday A H

Excellent Ferret glad Heptonstall is in your diary - the route could be even more interesting if the weather continues - doubt there will be many bogs unless the temperature rises; hope it does nt put you off our new river crossing!
Beside being our race HQ, The White Lion is our main sponsor, they won't let us down in the beer department....plenty of choice, all real ale/micro brewery kegs.
I'm going to nip into The White Lion tonight, Lynn the landord is giving the race a keg (need to pick one) with all sales on that keg going to our causes (Scouts, Mountain Rescue, and Heptonstall Church). The White Lion will also be donating 5 cases of bottled ale as prizes.
I hope everyone can call in for a beer after the race, hanging on for the prize giving at 14.30, the pub deserves some trade for all the support they have given the sport this year.

Re: Heptonstall Fell Race
Yup - it seems okay now. I went round the Hobble on it alright at the weekend. Should be good for Heptonstall this coming weekend :D

Re: Heptonstall Fell Race
got around Cambridge Half alright at the weekend (slower than anticipated mind) so only public transport catastrophe stands in the way. had bad experiences with running and the first train on a Sunday morning (once got to XC race 30 seconds before gun).

Good luck with your journey...the beauty of public transport is you can have a few beers in The White Lion....prize giving should be lively and worth hanging about for.
There will also be loads of food and warm drinks available in the finish field as soon as you collaspe at the end.....don't forget to put a couple of quid in your race gear!
We're serving up hot soup and piles of cakes/flap jacks next to the finish funnel - all provided by the local church - its free to runners, but they would be very grateful for donations towards their causes (hoping the finishers all arrive desperate for sugar/cake/warmth and have some change in their bum-bags)

Re: Heptonstall Fell Race
Trig, rumor has it there is some check point changes on the route for this year? Don't tell me my hours of running across Heptonstall Moor trying to find the same trod twice are all in vain?

Good piont Roubaix - you heard right; We have increased the number of CPs - the local scouts are able to cover more CPs,, allowing us to man checkpoints on all the hill tops - I have just been up-dating our race map to correctly show the 2013 CPs; I must stress that the 2013 route is not effected by the additional CPs. (your recce's were not in vain!) The CPs have been added to assist safety and avoid any potential for corner cutting...we will post the 2013 race map PDF on the race website tonight www.heptonstallfellrace.org.uk

Re: Heptonstall Fell Race
Well, I'm not going to be able to do this one now. I'm writing from a hospital bed in Airedale having just had my appendix whipped out. Still, next year I'll be carrying a few grams less weight.

Blimey - good luck with that Tussockface - does that mean we won't be seeing you in the master's lounge for a while?

2013 RACE MAP - NOW AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD ON WEBSITE - http://www.heptonstallfellrace.org.uk/route
Finally got the updated 2013 PDF uploaded - the only major changes are a few additional CPs. All CPs will be manned this year (rather than self-clip)
Don't forget that full fell running kit is compulsory - including map, whistle, and compass.
We also have plans for 2 water stations....Lady Royd Farm, and near to the Blue Pig (just before the final ascent to Heptonstall)

Re: Heptonstall Fell Race
Hi Trig, what was the response to the race t-shirts?! Are they available on the day and if so, how much? They look great

Quite a bit of interest but we have nt gone to print yet - the runner (Jedi) is a designer and he was palying round with a few mock-ups - I have one I'll wear out on Sunday - the guy who screen-prints can do them to order - we will send him the basic design then anyone can order direct
Just had a great offer from the landlord at the White Lion - 20 free pint vouchers to be redeemed at the White Lion at 14.00 just ahead of prize giving at 14.30 - to encouarge people to hang on for the prize giving - was thinking of giving them out as runners finish just need to come up with a system...

Yep, we'll be there. Are there any drink stops en route? Apparently one of the farms was giving out drinks and flapjack last year? Just planning my picnic.
John.

Evening John - we've got 2 drinks stations this year - Lady Royd (like last year between CP4 & 5 on the 2013 PDF map) and one at the Blue Pig (just at the foot the final climb) - you might event get a jelly baby - depends if the matshals have any on them - otherwise I would stuff some in your bag

Good old BBC I new they would come good

Re: Heptonstall Fell Race
Thanks Trig and all the helpers for a well organised event. I enjoyed the run - even the sting in the tail climb.
-
Re: Heptonstall Fell Race
Thanks for a fantastic event Trig, if you could order some frozen ground or 3 weeks of dry weather for next year that would be great.
-
Re: Heptonstall Fell Race
if anybody has found a pair of legs halfway up the final climb then please PM me
thoughts later, can't think straight
-
Re: Heptonstall Fell Race
Thanks trig and helpers, the tea/coffee ladies were lovely with their hot beverages and flapjacks. What a tough race this is, probably not the best idea after last weeks haworth hobble and yesterday's race in north Wales. I was completely knackered for the last 5 miles....word to self, I'm a knob and I should know better!!!
