Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Attachment 5047 Last week some riggers cane and stuck up a substantial new transmitter mast up next to the slender old mast that's been a feature of the view out of my bathroom.
Attachment 5048 Which promptly became a social hub for all of the Settle birds...
Attachment 5049...before they all go to roost.
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
A sparrowhawk was hunting some little birds by our road end this morning. Maybe they all flew off to your mast ZM. Saw about four deer in the field next to the A65 between Settle roundabout and Runley Bridge last week too.

Maybe so, but they should watch out, that mast looks like an open buffet for a sparrowhawk...
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Driving along the Strines road in the dark you often catch various wildlife in the head lamps but tonight was the best for a while. Whilst driving and watching bats flit around I thought I could see a fox running along the road but it looked a bit stocky and the colours weren't right then it turned looked at me and ran in to the undergrowth BADGER! really chuffed to see this but then a mile further along this white ghost of bird flew straight at me down the middle of the road. Pretty certain it was a barn Owl, glad I didn't hit it.

Chiffchaff (I think), haven't identified one before but had a good look and the book seems to agree. Could have been a willow warbler. Won't sleep tonight...

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
I went for a slow trot around Bolton Abbey yesterday, testing my leg to see how it's recovering. (ok, by the way, thanx for asking!)
Anyhoo, without even trying, I saw a stoat, heron, two kingfishers, dippers, a nuthatch, coal tits and all the usual birds and ducks. I'll have to have a slow walk around there early one morning, and have a good look, I bet there's loads. I've seen deer there on lots of occasions, red kites flying around, mandarin ducks, goosander...

Lammergeier (saw four in total) over Gingilos, Crete. Bit of a cheat really as it was over a month ago. Had to put the photo up as I was very exited to see them.
