I've been cycling 70k to 120k a week and only do the odd run (no more that 2 hill sessions per month) all the rest is cycling fitness or Bofra and short AS FRA races.
Fewer injuries and enjoying both.

Ok cheers both. I only ask as I had to give up off-road running cos of my back - was getting so much sciatic pain it wasn't funny.
But I reckon I could get away with just the odd race here and there.
Singlespeed.
Hills.
Massive downpour.
Brilliant!!:D
75km and 1300m ascent around Mold, Ruthin and Llandegla from Wrexham in 3.5 hours. Took it easy and loved it apart from 2 things: 1 - the torrential rain for the last third which, being mostly steep downhills, was a bit scary and 2 - getting clipped by a delivery van whilst climbing 'the shelf' out of Ruthin towards Llandegla. The wing mirror caught my elbow on a very tight and steep uphill bend and off i came. Veyr slow speed but no harm done. I was fuming (he didn't stop) and leapt on, didnt clip in properly (still getting used to it) and fell off again in a comedy manner which turned anger into laughter. I got on (properly) and pushed it up the Shelf and was amazed to record a 7th place on Strava (from 50 odd). Must have been the van induced adrenalin...
Food at the sublime OnePlanet and back home to Rossett in the piss wet. All in all, another learning experience on my early foray into road biking...
I should add that OnePLanet is a MTB place and it was very funny to rock up there and be the only cyclist not covered in sh1t! I got a few looks but it was worth it for their magnificent food.
I do indeed!
If you can cope with a novice, that would be cool. Novice at cycling, i'm brilliant at cake
Me and my mates doing 150km around the Staffordshire countryside this morning...... Well when I say "me"...

42 miles 1547ft @19 mph ave, a chilly windy evening, autumn isn't far away.
Did work and back. 28k each way. 62mins there 76mins home 1200Ft going 1700ft returning.
Autumn is here Rich.
Lights on front and rear only getting light at 6.30am
Long tights this morning and 3 top layers. Still frozen sill on all descents. Wet on way home.
Still enjoyed it though. Long may it continue.
The hill climb on vintage bikes from my local pub, up the hill to work :D
It was great fun, like last year... only this time I used a 1972 Raleigh bike that had not been used for 20 years! It was in original condition, so I gingerly pumped the tyres up, not too hard... Didn't want to explode them!!! They were so brittle they crackled! Brakes weren't working, so riding downhill to get to the start was 'interesting' to say the least! The things you find in the barn at work :)
First lady and first vintage bike, that will do me :) I have now been offered an even older bike for the purpose of entering vintage races whoop :)
A mighty 7 miles and 1200' feet. When I say cycling, I mean carrying :)
Appointment in Yorkshire later this month. Yikes!
I have the same appointment and not exactly done much carrying yet... Fitness and off road bike handling skills have improved dramatically from MTB racing but I need to get some carrying in! :w00t:
Working long days all weekend, but maybe I can get out tonight, just carrying the bike up the hill behind my house and back...
A rare outing on the road bike today, not much time but squeezed in 16.5 miles averaging 15 mph. Not bad for me considering nearly 6 miles was the longest continuous uphill in England from mytholmroyd up through cragg vale into the wind. Rest was undulating with a nice long downhill back into Ripponden hitting 40mph, thoroughly enjoyed it:thumbup:
24.7 miles 3973 ft 4hrs 5 mins PPP CX training in the Dales Ave speed 6MPH. Prob about 25% of it pushing shoving and carrying, after today I can say that the best type of bike for riding around the bridleways of the Dales has to be a full suss mountain bike the crosser had me in bits, hands numb from squeezing the brakes so hard in a vain attempt to slow the bloody thing down on the downhills, shoulder aching from carrying the bloody thing uphill.
Tea at the start and end in the 3 peaks cafe with toasted teacakes 1st then crumpets after, 1 tea and strawberry cream scone stop at the excellent Katie's teas in Halton Gill.
Highlight of the day was dumping the bike back in the car at Horton getting rid of the stiff shoes and running up and down Pen Y Ghent, bliss when you're not dragging a bloody bike around with you.
Not looking forward to the 30th now...
I am awaiting it with trepidation too...
Dislocating my right shoulder, where I carry the bike, a third time last week in the End 2 End MTB race hasn't helped :w00t:
I haven't dared try carry the bike and am starting to think, this close to the race, I am better off leaving that alltogether and count on my MTB fitness to get me through... PPPCX is obviously jinxed for me, because after my first time I have had a fractured ulna 1.5 weeks before the race... Tried racing with it but had to give up after Ingleborough. Last year I had to lend first aid and got set back by about half an hour and now I have a recent dislocated shoulder to contend with... GRRRRRRR
Tonight after work I will attempt a carry session... I have a flat front tyre, so it will be carry only as I don't have time to replace the tube...
That sounds sore Hanneke, could you possibly bodge something with an old inner tube over you head onto your good shoulder then hooking the pedal to carry it?
Have you looked at the Strathpuffer Hanneke it could be right up your street?

Windy club road ride this morning 53 miles 639ft @ 19.2 ave.
Oh wow, that does look good... in a sadomasochistic kind of way... Think I have an art fair that week though, always a problem getting time off work for racing, especially when they are far enough away to have to take 4 days off :(
I am going to experiment with the inner tube tonight, could well be genius! I have tried shouldering the bike on the other side, but it just doesn't work. For Simon's Fell I put it accross my upper back/shoulders though, so that should be ok.
I saw a woman last year doing something like that. Short loop of climbing tape attached I think at the seat cluster, grabbed over the left shoulder, pulling the bike more broadly across her upper back. I spoke to her briefly but it's all a blur now ;-)
76 miles road, 3000'. One bottle, one tracker bar, one scone, one coffee.
walk jog over simon fell to ingleborough - took the wrong line down and ended up at newby cotes instead of cold cotes [oops]
got on cross bike and rode the road round to pen y ghent lane - rode up the 'legal' part and a very short way along the (not race route) bridle way and back down - then road back to little stainforth camping. authenticity was added to the pen y ghent lane experience by a fellow reccier coming down as i was going up :-)
Ratfink would have been the lady :)
I tried last weeks dislocated shoulder on a wet, windy, cold and dark ride last night. I managed to get the bike accross the shoulders ok, managed to carry it up Black Hill ok, then rode a little off road, all ok but a bit wobbly. Maybe that was because there was a hurricane force wind blowing, it was dark, it was wet and the light of my helmet light kept being reflected by the rain, so I could not see too much so was going slow = more wobble. I am hoping to be ok in two weeks time. We shall see :) Bigger and steeper carry planned for Tuesday night, hopefully in the daylight...
Holdon, what was that woman wearing? As I separated the right shoulder last year, I wasn't able to shoulder the bike, so carried it accross both shoulders over my upper back... I am still doing that :) I hold it by seat tube and handlebars, but when it sits properly, you only need one hand to balance the bike on your back, so one hand free to use climbing Simon's Fell :)
rich i think i might have seen the couple you mean ahead - i was in black/white with a non bearded bloke mate (he on mountain bike)
Ratfink I do remember another combination of two people, one on a mtb and maybe a bit of blue clothing but my eyes were probably out of focus due to all the vibration, CX bikes are really unforgiving on that type of terrain.
Stockport to home in North Wales - 103km, once I rode the 13km to Chester station and got the train to Stockport. Decided to do a cross-Cheshire ride for some reason, just liked the idea of crossing a county from one side to the other.
so 116km today, good training for my first ever Audax in just under 2 weeks (120km). Felt good, back a bit sore bit legs did ok.
Hill reps: 10 miles/1550'. Dinner!
Hmmm... I may well be out of 3 peaks. That crash at the End 2 End race last week has taken it out of me more than I thought... Was out with a mate tonight, doing some 3peaks cx training and found the carry very hard work. It is about equal to Simon's fell. I got up but I don't think I'd be able to get up Whernside and Pan-y-Ghent after :( Then came some descending... Too painful for words. Where I normally happily zip down, shaking, rocking and rolling, I had to stop halfway because it was too painful on my shoulder :( It is not looking good. I am going to take it easy for a week then try again next week and see how I feel and decide. But at the moment, it isn't looking likely I will get round :(
Anyways, if I am out, so be it. I took a claculated risk on that descent last week, trying to catch no 1 lady, so I have no regrets. It is part of racing... Like racing hard at Torq 12:12 and not havikng fully recovered for the IOM race... I won Torq, I feel like you need to grab what you can on the day: carpe diem! As you don't know what lies ahead of you :)
Bad news Hann, get well soon mrs. :)
Thanks Merry, I am trying... fingres crossed that taking it easy for another week will do it...
It doesn't seem too bad when out and about doing normal stuff, not worse than it was anyway, but you know what 3peaks cx is like: hard, bl**dy hard... so we emulated that yesterday for a couple of hours and I could not have done any more... :( I'd do a MTB race the way I feel now, but 3 peaks is just so much harder on the boody! The bruising seemed worse than the shoulder so lets hop that clears enough with another week or so...
Blooming cold this morning.
Lights on, 4 layers, over shoes, thermal tights, buff on head. Still chilly on the descents.
28k @ 6.30am, cant wait till my ride home from work in the sunshine.
Get better soon Han:thumbup:
oh get well soon Hann!
1:30pm into bike kit
1:31 starts hailing
1:33 just rain now
1:34 hill reps
2:05 home
2:10 sunshine
Bad luck Hanneke, Three Peaks is one race that'll search out your weakness. Good luck!
Trying to console myself looking at stage races... Langkawi in October seems a good idea... UCI race that attracts a high quality field, but hey ho, who cares if I am last, nice warm sunny holiday ;)
