Three Shires

Thank you to the organisers for putting on this great race, despite the initial parking problems. I would also like to thank the women/angel who provided me with some desperately needed water at Blea Tarn.

The 40 minute! climb up Weatherlam half killed me and almost got lost coming off SwirlHow in the mist, but thoroughly enjoyed it and despite my usual depreciation of speed I think that after 3 years of infrequent fell running I am slowly getting better. Bring on the Horseshoe. :rolleyes:

Anyone know if the results are up yet, or do we all have to wait for the fra website to be updated.

I did get lost coming off Swirl How - about 50 people must have overtaken the group I was in....... Made the 2nd half interesting trying to catch people up, but too much to do..... will know for next year!

Cracking day all round. Fantastic effort from Selwyn and the rest of the Ambleside team to get the parking sorted and the race on.

Final hard run before the Trail des Aiguilles Rouges next Sunday. Took a head first dive coming down towards Blea Tarn but no harm done, just a few bruises and scrapes.

Not often I get a prize; must come 100th more often! Glad there were 4 of us in the car so I had some help getting all that fruit back in one piece. I'll treasue that 25th anniversary tee shirt!

novice - when are you thinking of recce'ing?

I'm intending to get up to the Lakes on a Friday in March - was going to do some BG - but could do 3 Shires instead...

I would say quite a lot of it is. Worth following the right people early on and recceing the way off Pike a Blisco right down to road crossing in case theres noone suitable to follow by then.

Having been round it a couple of times, but always in perfect weather, I'd say you'd have to do something pretty special to go wrong anywhere between the start and Swirl Howe. From Swirl Howe you could conceivably end up going too far left of Great Carrs and end up miles up the valley from The Three Shires Stone. If in doubt follow the walkers path over Great Carrs and down to the Stone. From here it's a matter of heading NNE and just keep going up until you can't go up any further to the top of Pike Of Blisco! The bit from here to Blea Tarn could be the most dodgy in bad visibility. You could go too far North and end up on the walkers path down Redacre Gill which would be disastrous race-wise but at least you'd get to the pub faster. From Blea Tarn there shouldn't be any problems and the route may be marked from Lingmell summit to the end. So yes, there are definitely some dodgy parts where you might want to brush up on the colours of the local clubs vests when deciding who to follow
