Wasdale Horseshoe Fell Race -
This just received

Saturday 9th July 2011
Dear Competitor,
it is with much regret that I have to inform you that I have decided to cancel this year's Wasdale Fell Race. Due to unforeseen family commitments I find myself with too little time to do the necessary work & have been unable to obtain a substitute organiser. However, I anticipate 2012's race will go ahead as normal.
I will arrange to refund entry fees already banked asap, but please be patient as this will be delayed until into late July before we can begin to sign cheques etc. Cheques received from today will not be cashed.
Please check the CFRA website for any other details which I will keep updated.
Many apologies again for your obvious disappointment, especially to those who have made it an annual event.
Yours sincerely
Richard J Eastman

Re: Wasdale 2011
Well it looks like we won't be doing this after all! Shame as I was looking forward to it. There's always next year I suppose!

Re: Wasdale 2011
Disaster!
Surely its not too late ??!!
I don't live anywhere near but would happily take on admin, communicating with whoever needs communicated with, if anyone in the area can take on the on the ground stuff.
I want to run Wasdale !!!
Calling all fell runners....
-
Re: Wasdale 2011
Right, we can't allow this. I have rung Richard offering my services as organiser, it's over a month until race day and I don't have any family commitments or job stress to get in the way. Unfortunately for me he's abroad, and 6 hours behind so 4am isn't really the best time for a phonecall...oops. Anyway, don't cancel your holidays just yet.
Anyway, I'm positive there's plenty of time before the race to sort this out
Don't panic

Re: Wasdale 2011
No! It's my favourite race...
I've emailed Richard. Would be happy to help in any way, so long as I can still race! And, given that it sounds as if the race is cancelled for other means, not through lack of marshalls etc., it doesn't sound like I'd be needed on Gable summit checkpoint!

Rhys,
I thank you.
Wasdale is the definitive fell race. Until you have completed Wasdale you are just playing around.
Richard is a lovely chap and it has been a privilege for me to have had his help when awarding the LCT trophies at the FRA Annual "Do".
Many thanks for stepping in to maintain the sequence of this great race.

Re: Wasdale 2011
Must just say, great effort by Rhys FR stepping in and keeping this years race alive. Never done Wasdale and can't make it this year, but as GB says, it's THE one to have done. Many fellrunners will be grateful for your efforts Rhys:thumbup:

Re: Wasdale 2011
Thank you for all the offers of help. As it stands, CFR have already volunteered in their droves but I will keep you all in mind as there are bound to be jobs available.
Richard is still very much as involved as one can be despite his being in Peru, so I am merely carrying out the essential tasks under his guidance. Hopefully he will be with us on race day (so I can race and settle last year's rather unimpressive benchmark).

Re: Wasdale 2011
Great to hear it's back on! Or maybe not so great as I have no excuse now not to do it. I hope I can get the training in!

Re: Wasdale 2011 BACK ON !!!
Just out of curiosity, if you only had two days to recce the Wasdale course, where would people go! i.e. Where might I get lost come the day of the race!!!

Re: Wasdale 2011 BACK ON !!!
does anyone know if the pre entry list is likely to be updated prior to the event ? ( in light of organistaional changes I don't really want to check entry receipt with the organiser if I can help it )
Thanks
-
Re: Wasdale 2011 BACK ON !!!
The entry list is very likely to be updated before the event. Richard is doing this from Peru, so please be patient.
If anyone fancies a day out, or is coming to spectate anyway, I am still short of some hill marshals!!!!! Please contact me ASAP if you would like to help.

Might be able to do a hill station but I'll have my daughter with me...

Re: Wasdale 2011 BACK ON !!!
Thanks Ian, Im probably alright for hill marshals now unless youre desperate. No doubt there will be some jobs knocking bout on the day, or you can just have a nice day int hills.

Re: Wasdale 2011 BACK ON !!!
I've entered the Wasdale but have been dithering about whether to do it - it would be a shame not to turn up now that people have put so much effort into making sure it goes ahead.
A decisive factor in my decision is the ball-ache and expense of getting to Wasdale.
I'll be travelling up from St Helens, fairly close to the M6. Is there anyone else travelling from anywhere in the vicinity or on my way up (Standish, Wigan, Leyland, Chorley, Preston, Lancaster etc) who wants to share transport?

Re: Wasdale 2011 BACK ON !!!
Just thinking if it's warm next week that hydration will be critical
I've not done the race before , but I'm thinking that leaving a bottle by the road ( Nether Wasdale ish ) after the first hill would be a good idea ( is there a designated crossing area which is marked on the Friday ? )
and also one up Black Sail/Great Gable area would be good too
is this a usual practice for unsupported competitors ?
any advice/experience/thoughts ? Thanks

There's no point leaving a bottle there, in previous years there's been Joss Naylor handing out drinks. The route is flagged in the valley bottom once you have come down the first hill.
-
Re: Wasdale 2011 BACK ON !!!
fabulous !.....that's like having Sean Kelly handing bottles out on a road race...top stuff.
-
Re: Wasdale 2011 BACK ON !!!
camping ....the site at the top of the valley seems obvious....but does it suffer from those people who constantly turn up in the middle of night for a noisy jaunt up Scafell inbetween taxi rides between hills ?.....(a previous bad experience camping for snowdon marathon makes me think one of the campsites down the valley may be quieter ? )
Thanks

There are loads of place's to fill up from.Joss gives water out at Greendale,About 10 mins from here you cross Greendale Gill, then nothing till you start to contour round Kirkfell (Sail Beck) and last Sprinkling Tarn.

Cheers! Recced yesterday! Seems straight forward in the glorious sunshine!!! :) I know it now tho', I recognised it from being slightly 'lost' at Scoatfell in Ennerdale Race! Blimey Gable looks a long way from Scoatfell!! :)

Re: Wasdale 2011 BACK ON !!!

I am resigned to my fate :)

Re: Wasdale 2011 BACK ON !!!
Anyone interested in an alternative short run whilst Wasdale is on? Starting at 11:30, the proposed route goes to the 'Maiden Castle' cairn (near Burnmoor Tarn) up to Slight Side, along the ridge (Long Green) to Scafell then back to the starting point. This measures 6.0 miles and 3050ft of climbing. It will take most people somewhere between 1 and 2 hours so would be over well before the first Wasdalers return. You may notice it neatly fills in the only bit of the Wasdale skyline that the big Wasdale doesn't visit.
Wasdale is too long for me at the moment but this is more within my range it would be a totally low key, self timed 'event' but quite competitive if a few decide to have a go.
Something to get your teeth into whilst the 'massive' are getting round the Wasdale?
PM me if interested.
