But at least you beat Antonio!
I don't recall seeing him tbh. Two weeks until dunnerdale, that race will kill me if I can't recover, I'll be leaving in a pine box.
Good luck - I can see you dipped under 50m in 2019 so a good target.
50m on the bike today, up to the craven arms and back. Still feeling like i'm training at altitude, i've not struggled as much in recent years to turn a 36/26 up the steep chevin, and all the effort and blowing didn't seem to translate into body heat and sweating either. Took over 3h in the end and well under my target average speed of 16mph. nobody saw fit to shout at me for not waering a helmet, though, so a bonus there.
5 Carr Bridge Drive reps tonight, times as follows...
1.53
1.58
2.00
2.03
2.03
The total is 597s, and compared to the times i should be running for 5 reps- 559s, i'm 7% slower. So my estimate after Black Lane Ends of having lost 8% of my aerobic capacity wasn't far off. The leg speed seems to be there, but my legs get cooked too early and the lactate burn just persists...plus the awful blowing and panting.
The 50@50 situation is looking dicey, i tried to enter the Litton Xmas Cracker at teatime on the 1st Nov only to find it must have been full by lunchtime; so i don't have an entry. I've explained by email that i'd like an EOD so i can defend my position, but i'm not hopeful. Last time i ran this event it was EOD and basically a very pleasant hilly trail race with a final yomp up to a trig; why it is now so sought after i can't really understand, it has to be the fastest filling race in fell running. Garry Greenhow only now needs to put on his shoes and i'm down to third. I'm not used to the bitter disappointment of high end racing, i'm going to need a session of counselling off Noel at some point.
My old mince pies are ageing a bit, i thought it was take the pressure and 'growl', but you've used a punctuation mark.
Sod it, i'm going to growl anyway.
If it is allowed Mr B, you are welcome to have my place in order to keep your 50@50 challenge on track.
I think one of the problems with pre entry, especially on-line with the likes of SIentries, Fabian4 and in this case AVTiming is that it appears to take away from the RO the ability to allow a "wildcard" entry.
This is one of those situations where we need a "like" button.
I've tried a different email address for the Xmas Cracker, fingers crossed! They seem to have changed the course dramatically from when i last did it, no more paddling in Miller's Dale.
A permissive path that was used on the original course has been blocked off, hence the new route.
It now boasts more ascent and you will still get wet feet as there is a crossing of the River Wye to negotiate. There will be people on hand to fish you out if required and stop you ending up in the Humber Estuary!

The new route actually looks to favour me more. You're about a third of the way round before you hit a hill and one descent down.
First time i've done four sessions in a week since my left ITB car crash months ago.
Tinshill Lane rep, 1x 0.7m/240'
Carr Bridge Drive reps, 2x 0.25m/110' (1.53, 1.57)
Tinshill Lane rep, 1x 0.7m/240' (5.15)
Carr Bridge Drive reps, 2x 0.25m/110' (2.03, 2.00)
I blew up 3/4 of the way up the first Tinshill rep, just couldn't get the air in. Second one timed at 5.15, so sub 5m is the target when i'm well. Still slow on the short reps, the cold flared up badly last night so i had to cancel pilates and turn in at half seven.
Parkrun today, Bramley. New course so PBs are void, liked the old one better as it had fewer corners, some of the new corners are hairpins. Ran 21.05, very windy.
'Full Tour of the Fairy Hills' route today from Linton, 5.5m/1700', bit of a Dunnerdale preamble. I can normally run the whole first climb up Elbolton Hill, but i was on my arse half way up, i mean i basically staggered to the cairn. The next climb up Stebden Hill was so breathless i nearly stopped for a rest, and the fast blast down and back to fell gate was a struggle. My legs just go to jelly after no time, i couldn't breath any faster if i tried and i have no climbing power at all. God knows when this is going to end.
I've made up a batch of Chinese medicinal garlic soup; it's recommended for stagnation and all invasions of wind and cold, especially conditions of the lung. Three garlic bulbs in all, a portion for every day next week so it'll be like eating half a garlic bulb every day for a week.
Tinshill Lane rep, 1x 0.7m/240'
Carr Bridge Drive reps, 8x 0.25m/110'
I decided to just set off on the first rep and let my legs find a speed. I felt better and managed to get to the top of Tinshill Lane quite comfortably, i seemed faster. I started on the Carr Bridge reps and just kept going until i ran out of time, i could have done more and i felt a lot more comfortably going deep. My legs were not burning up quickly like the were doing at the weekend. I might survive Dunnerdale, i've at least got a shot at getting clear at the start and not getting trampled by the 405 runners there'll be on that tiny lane.
Dunnerdale today, 5m/1800'. Just had to start running and see how it panned out; i was slow on the first climb, lacking a bit in the middle section, feeling it a lot by the top of CP2. I'm not burning out really fast and i'm getting more 02 in, but it translated to a bit of a stinker, 4mins off my PB which is the sort of speeds i was running 10yrs ago.
Well, i woke up this morning feeling like i hadn't done a race yesterday. My knowledge of sports science is lacking a bit, but it seems like my legs are having it very easy due to my lungs not being able to supply the oxygen.
50m bike ride to the Craven Arms and back today, average speed was over 16 which was expected on fairly fresh legs, and time was well under 3h.
Carr Bridge Drive reps, 6x 0.25m/110' tonight. A bit of a rough session, not breathing freely at all.
Bramley Parkrun today, 20.37. Another windy day, went for a long one to bag 2nd, 300m slog running on fumes all the way.
8.3m/2620' AM Two Dales extra hilly route today. Ran the whole way up the packhorse track out of Starbotton up to Old Cote Moor which basically made my left knee hurt a bit, but i ran the lot so maybe my missing V02 max is coming back. I reckon Darren Fishwick had borrowed it judging by his Dunnerdale result. Got there too late, pissed the daylight up the wall by drinking brews all morning, so didn't warm up properly and got soreness issues.
Tinshill Lane rep, 1x 0.7m/240' (4.51)
Carr Bridge Drive reps, 4x 0.25m/110' (1.56, 1.54, 2.05, 2.00)
Another uneven session, but i've set a new best time for Tinshill Lane. I won't be able to class myself as right again until i'm averaging <1.55 for CBD, at the moment it's 2.00. I've taken the plunge and ordered a new electronic backlit stopwatch, the mechanical Hanhart will stay at work for my flexibility sessions. Unfortunately i can't get a watch that stores rep times, they all only work on a lap basis.
I really don't like running in snow, and i wasn't expecting to have to do so either. Weather forecast said cold and cloudy, weather was 3h of heavy snowfall. I arrrived at Kettlewell ready for my hill session to prepare me for Cardington, only to turn around and drive straight back home in order make it out before the roads became totally snowbound. I compromised on a 9m speed endurance in the washburn valley which didn't go well due to traction being hard to find and snowflakes being painful to inhale into your lungs. My breathing was strained and shallow because i was trying not to inhale snow, which was coming down as heavily as i'd ever seen it. Beamsley Hill had not been gritted and was quickly compacted and turned into a nightmare as i ran my route. Afterwards i managed to listen to the same Keane album one and a half times between Swinsty and the roundabout near the Devonshire Hotel Brasserie, wagons were crawling in low range to avoid jack-knifing, it was awful. I'm a bit under prepared now.
[QUOTE=mr brightside;676804]I really don't like running in snow,
I'm not keen on running in snow either but I love running on it.
Especially when it was like today when the surface just holds long enough to allow you to move to the next stride without breaking through it. Walking would have been harder work as the surface would have been broken.
Only 4 miles today over local fields but very enjoyable.
Oh yeah, and if anyone is planning a circuit of Thruscross, take a chainsaw and possibly a chipper if you have room in your pack.
Flat speed session with Horsforth Harriers tonight, 10x400 alternating with a pair runner. Wheezing quite a bit, still struggling to get the air in. My hams are feeling like they did a lot of work which rarely happens.
What time are you doing those in, and with how much recovery? (I assume recovery is 70-90secs depending on your partner?)
My hamstrings always suffered when I started doing track work.
My new Fastime athletics stopwatch is still in the post, so i'll have to post some times up after the next session...whenever that is. I'm hoping for an average over the 10 of no more than 75s, with the fastest being 70 and the slowest 80.
They run it on a circular housing development, not a track. It's perfectly flat and 400 if you hug the kerb, or so i'm told.
I slept awfully last night and i have a terrible headache, which i think is something to do with the exertion levels involved.
That's very decent. Will be interesting to see if you hit those times.
I did 12 a couple of weeks ago at 80secs, off 90secs rest, although it was my first hard rep session for a bit. But when i'm regularly doing speedwork, i can often hit 75's.
70 is currently out of my league!
I always have trouble switching off and sleeping after a similar session! It's definitely the exertion and intensity.
I'm perhaps being optimistic then, we'll see.
No hill intervals tonight, i'm resting for cardington. I've started doing weight work on an inclined leg press in the gym at my workplace. Weekly sessions on medium weight have never worked for me, so i'm going to reverse everything. I'm trying one set of reps to near failure on 180kg every fortnight, i went to 20 today.
180kg is some going....
i do incline leg press, but only at about 90kg. But i'm usually doing several reps of 20 with perhaps 30secs rest between sets, and i'm doing that several times a week (much less when racing).
Although as a bit of a change i'm adding in some squats with one of those heavy duty chains wrapped around me.... they only weigh about 20-30kg, but save time on waiting for, then using the squat rack. Again multiple sets with up to 20 reps.
It's about a 45 deg. incline. What you describe has never worked for me in the past, it's exactly what gives me issues. A good fly fishing tip i once got was to change to a totally different fly if the pattern you are using is not catching you fish.
Yes same one for me, 45deg...
Oh definitely if it's not working then discard it. Although to be honest i've been a gym-goer for 25 years pretty much without a break, and found what works for me... i'm a rarity in my gym though, most of the others are lifting maximum weight for very low reps (i.e trying to push their 1-rep-maximum)
50m ride to the craven arms and back today, which was just self abuse the way I feel. I was ok when I got inside and got stuck into a pint and a jam roly poly with custard, but the riding part was uncomfortable due to sinus pain and cold air. It was like a bad day on an Atlantic trawler when I set out, and I had to brace myself to the task like never before just to keep pedalling.
I had a 6.45 alarm set for Cardington, but at 5.30 when I was up for the fourth time for aspirin having only slept for about 5h, I knew it was off.
