Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
in the woods yesterday i saw a paw print.
the pad was the size of the palm of my hand?
seems too big to be a dog, even a mastiff.
its an under used path and section of land.
a couple of years ago i saw similar prints,
the same time there was a rumour of a big cat about.
i dont know,im sceptical.
but i know what i saw,
will take a camera next time to see if can get a pic.
any ideas?

A grey squirrel. Crossing the parapet of a bridge a mile or two North of junction 40 on the M1. He was heading East and was well over half way across the motorway

My border collie
can
sometimes make massive
paw prints with his
otherwise
sticky legs and feet
as the
mud pushes out as his
paw pushes down
sometimes a bog
looks like a bear
rather
than
a
collie has been
that way

Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Dylan, dog-type prints nearly always leave claw marks, cat prints very rarely do - does that help? And like the other poster said, the print left behind is often way larger than the foot that made it...
Has anyone else noticed birds appearing in pairs again? 3 bullfinches at work, 2 dippers at Bolton Abbey, four plastic swans with no beaks (not sure what they're there for!)
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
Lovely sighting of a barn owl in wharfedale today (nr Buckden). Watched it fly around then followed it into a barn where we got a real close up, magic. Also 2 buzzards and dippers.
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
2 Snipes on yesterdays run, nearly trod on one as it was deep in the undergrowth sheltering from the snow.
Re: Today's Wildlife Encounter
A buzzard on the way home from the run yesterday, also a stoat/weasel diving back in to a snow hole, couldn't see any colour against the whiteness of the snow.
Much more exciting though whilst climbing bleaklow in a deep clough, as we approached a junction a grouse flying low and fast shot across about 10ft in front of us followed a split second later by an even faster Peregrine, we must have startled the Peregrine as it pulled out of the kill, although the size of the grouse would have been a big feed for a peregrine. never been as close to a peregrine in the wild, but it was all over so quick.
