Hi Folks, I would like a place if anyone can transfer theirs please :)
Looking forward to running this event this year after walking the challenge in 2012. Had a ~20mile recce at the weekend incorporating most of the route, ankle deep after Weecher on the approach to 12 Apostles so not too bad but as mentioned in a previous post by RF the Chevin climb is slippery (and gooey). Dropped straight down at Whetstone Gate so don't know what conditions were like for the section beyond that (via Buckstones?). Furthest I've ever run by a fair whack but coped fairly well so not TOO apprehensive about it, just hoping it doesn't leather it down on the day. For the record, was wearing Roclite315's and they were fine all the way except for a lack of purchase on the steepest portion of the Chevin.
Did the full route myself at the weekend. Pretty boggy & hard going all the way. As you say, the climb up The Chevin was interesting ! The section down from West Buckstones is now flagged, alas, so no fun & games to be had there anymore. This'll be a road run before long, if certain people get their way. I have it on good authority that a certain chap wants to create a linear path looping right around Ilkley Moor.
On advice from the hospital I'm an exercise free zone at the minute until I see a consultant on Monday, so I will know after then if I will be transferring my place or not. First come first served if I do.
Hi Flopsy
I have sent you a PM
Jez
I was out on the moor on Sunday and the new path out at Buckstones made me do a double take. I used to like that part of the course as there were a couple of places where kind walkers had dumped stones and bits of wood as makeshift bog crossings and if you could hit those you could make up some ground on people wading through the mud. Never mind, I'm looking forward to the race anyway....

Looking at the weather we may be getting some snow on the route this weekend, been hoping that would happen before the day itself to familiarise myself with a few things. Snow showers forecast on Sunday and possibly Monday so hoping for a bit of accumulation for a steady 10-15miles, all being well.
I was up there today on my lunch break in the fog trying a slightly different route between whetstone gate and pipers crag. Didn't work out much faster (if at all) but I now find it quite hard to get lost up there, even in low visibility today each new path came out more or less exactly where I expected it to, funny how you get familiar with places.
Intended doing an 18 mile trip round most of the course yesterday after work, misjudged the distance and it ended up nearly 20 miles. A catalogue of problems meant I got very very cold coming down Keighley gate road (cutting off the west buckstones/pipers crag section) and by the time I was off the moor at Burley woodhead I was feeling very rough. My whole body was cold and I felt unusual to say the least. After a while I felt I was warming up but still felt terrible and started getting a little vague and thinking unusual thoughts. I made it up the Chevin and painfully trotted back down to my van parked at the leisure centre before starting to feel dizzy and extremely sleepy. Not a great sign really. I sat in the van and drank two cups of hot coffee from a flask along with several biscuits before turning the heater on low and warming up slowly. Took me ages before I felt right again. I'm pretty sure I was Hypothermic and it wasn't a pleasant experience at all. I had worn a decent layer of clothing but obviously not enough to combat the extremely cold wind in my face all the way down the moor and back across it. Valuable lessons learnt though, and I have to say, having read Ian's article put me in good stead to recognise what was happening and stay in control. I had a phone but given my position I decided I didn't need to call for help just yet as I would have had to stop and wait, which would have obviously made me even colder. What I did do was text my wife as soon as I was at the van to tell her what was happening and where I was as a bit of a backup.
Scary stuff :w00t:
Easily done and the reason I carry more than I need to on hill runs.
Glad you got down ok.
Well that was hard work! Ended up doing just over 15miles of the route and left totally spent when I'd finished. Hope it's not like that on Feb 2nd but glad I got a taste of it just incase. The boggy section on Burley Moor was particularly arduous as every step bit into the virgin snow then briefly held firm for a nanosecond before crunching through the semi-frozen bog skin. Was also continuously paranoid about coming a cropper on any hidden rocks etc. Besides all that it was really beautiful up there and with the exception of a couple walking their dog on the aforementioned Burley Moor I saw not a soul until hitting Menston. Anyone else given it a whirl up there today?
I have a spare number for this race, unfortunately I can't run now so if you're interested, please PM me. First come, first served.
The rules state that written permission must be obtained from the organiser for any proposed transfer but that's something I can sort out.
Hi Linda, I have PMd you!
Ah sorry Dino, hope you get a place.
I've emailed and phoned him today but had no response. His number is 01274 610132 (from the LDWA site) Mark Wilson.
If you get hold of him, please ask him to read my email too!
Thanks.
Got a mate after a place too!! ....
Thanks for trying Simon Dino!
Not wishing to gloat, but I've managed to get a last minute transfer (acknowledged by the RO in writing) and am now going to do this. The problem is that, although I know Rombalds moor in particular and the area in general tolerably well there's no time for a recce. Any tips?
I've also not done a longie since Tour of Pendle and so may not be at my peak but that's another issue.
Will be a fair crowd to follow (assuming you're not planning on being at the front!) for most of the route so don't worry too much about not getting a recce in, although it might be worth a review of the thread and some Google earth research to get a handle on the Rocky Valley to Pancake Stone and subsequent Menston village sections. Plenty of useful info throughout the thread that I've found very helpful.
Agree with all what Pragmatic says, although apparently 2 or 3 years ago when the clag was down people were all over the place dropping down to Pipers Gate cp from Buckstones so hope for a good visibility day. No doubt you will also be aware that the dreaded flagstones now go all the way from Lanshaw Lad to the masts at Whetstone Gate.
A further tip is to hold a little back on the downhill West Chevin Road section before the toughest part of the whole route - the climb to top of Chevin.
I'm also short of long runs...longest since August has only been 13 miles but still hope to get round in close to 4 hours.
My one piece of advice would be not to even attempt running the Chevin section ! Power walk all the way !
Would a power stagger do it? Being optimistic.
Can talk you through route on Tuesday at club if you want? Particularly the "tricky" sections at the end of RV up and round to the edge and the bit through Menston.
Re: the last bit up the Chevin - don't worry about it - I pretty much consider when you've got to East Chevin road, it's all over bar the shouting in terms of effort - East Chevin road is downhill and you only need to let you legs go, as you can walk up the Chevin and then let the legs go back down into Guiseley.
Thanks, Richard. I'm not sure whether I'll be there on Tuesday, but if I am I shall pick your brains. I'll be with the crowd at the start, but some pointers for the end of the route when folks may be more spread out would be much appreciated.
Hmm, my fingers seem to have engaged before my brain! East, West, what's the difference?! ;) I'm too busy thinking where I need to help out and marshal at the AIRE orienteering event on Chevin & Danefield in the evening.
My legs are going to love me standing around in the cold after 22miles around the Rombalds course.
Anyone who fancies a bit extra after the 22mile warm-up is more than welcome to have a go: http://www.aire.org.uk/ClubDocs/2013...13%20flyer.pdf
Maybe I should stick to that, since my nav obviously needs further improvement!
Not going to be able to run sadly as I'm having problems with my gall bladder at the moment and just found out it's got to be removed
I don't want to waste my place and I understand that there is a waiting list. So if somoene wants my place shout asap or else I'll contact the organiser so someone on the wait list can have it.
