Grasmere for me too. Hope the weather is good for another fine day out. :D
What a cracking route those good people at Morecambe bay and Bowland LDWA created for us today in the Grasmere Fells and Tarns.
SportTracks made it 21 miles and 6800' climb.
I was familiar with Heron Pike/Great Rigg/Fairfield area but Helm Crag/Blea Rigg/Silver Howe/Loughrigg were all new to me.
Great way to spend a Saturday http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/t...ebit/Cool2.gif
I can`t agree more a real GEM and FWIW I reckon more challenging than Four Lakeland passes, as ever extremely well managed thanks again Morecambe bay and Bowland you really do know how to give a lot of folk a lot of pleasure .
Distance I got was 31.81 km and 2075 mtrs of ascent /descent, so it looks like imperil and metric pretty much agree on this one, a big bonus was a BROCKEN SPECTRE on the descent from Fairfield.
Some photos here http://www.justusuk.com/2011/04/gras...rbread-16.html
I agree, fantastic day out-much more runners than walkers this time but I reckon it would be hard to fit this distance and climb in comfortably at walking pace in under 8 hrs. We managed 5.40 but kept running steady all the time and had no breaks. Were pretty knackrd at the end and my friend had awful cramp all the way up Loughrigg but still perfect training for the 3 Peaks with no pressure that you get in a race and the added bonus of friennds to natter to all the way!
JohnK, that Brocken spectre sounds good. I'd like to see one of those one day. When I descended from Fairfield the clouds parted to reveal breathtaking views of Grisedale Tarn down below. I became a bit snap-happy, gawped and enthused. I'm not used to such views. A brief account with links to all the pictures is in the usual ultraploddernick location (link below).
Ian, your pictures are excellent, as always.
I plotted the route on Tracklogs for the event then tweaked it according to where it actually went. It comes out at 20.4 miles with 6,782' of ascent.
MorganW, good to meet you (and be aware of who I'm talking with).
How did the Wensleydale Wander go for those who chose that option?
Is anyone running the Pendle Witch Way on the 30th April? - I've never done a LDWA event before and it would be nice to know if there will be others running.
[QUOTE=BritNick; How did the Wensleydale Wander go for those who chose that option?[/QUOTE]
Very enjoyable, a bit short on cake but there were hotdogs on the Middleham gallops (and not yer usual "white van" business either but locally-sourced, hand rolled jobs - marvellous!). I particularly enjoyed going the wrong way at Cover Bridge as I found a lovely route to Jervaux Abbey which I walked the next day. :o There was a nice haul up onto Middleham Moor, excellent running surface (although maybe not enough mud for some folk) and lots of water stops given the heat. Usual LDWA hospitality and dry humour from the marshalls and had a nice chat with a couple from the Peak training for the Lakeland 50 on the way round (Hi if you read this). Great views across to Penhill and some enjoyable descents. I think the first man home made it in 2.58 for those interested in times.
Lovely day in Wensleydale, blue skys and warm but not too hot for enjoyable running. Really enjoyed it and followed up with a few beers on mates patio in Leyburn, top day out for under a tenner.
Wensleydale sounds good, but what's all this about hand-rolled hot dogs? I've only ever experienced a ground-unmentionable sausage dropped into a sliced white torpedo roll of pith. I'd like to try a hand-rolled one some time. What's it rolled in?
dek, it sounds idyllic, ending the day with tipples and relaxation on the patio.
Britnick, clearly your gastronomic standards are much higher than mine!
Nick, looking forward to seeing your photos in a moment; that view alone was worth the (tiny) entry fee.
Good to chat for a bit.
Sorry to depress you further about the shoes; the Roclite 295s straight out of the box were fantastic all day. No problems and dead comfy.
Yes, Grasmere was excellent.
Just enough clag early on to keep things interesting. There were some issues for some on Helm Crag, lots of shouting and one lost man if I recall; safely discovered at the finish!
I can believe the 22 miles and nearly 7,000'. I was way more tired than after the 4 Passes.
Very happy with a 5.14 circuit and I did enjoy the Gingerbread a day or so later. :D
Thanks LDWA Morcambe for The Grassmere event. i walked the 13 miler with wife and 3 kids and we had a great day. Fantastic spread at the end too.
anything on in the next few weeks worth looking at? I'm doing the LDMT but could do with some long runs?
9th Hills and Dales?
9th Hills & Dales is 10 September, not October. I don't think I've done that one, so can't comment on it. The Chatsworth Challenge the following day is good (25 miles). Nine Edges Endurance (20 miles) on 24 September looks interesting, but I've not done it - looks more like your sort of run Ian. The Six Dales Circuit (12 November, 25 miles) is good too. No idea whether I'll be doing any of them at the moment - I've not planned my autumn yet.
nine edges is full , i tried getting on begining of the week and no plces left im affraid:thunbdown:
Bottoms Up - next Saturday - got the route description but could do with an outline map or GPS track.
Has anyone got one?
doesnt seem to be a 4 lakeland passes event this year, anyone know any different?
It's the 13th October this year.
Details here
Aye up Rev. You definitely doing it again ? I'm tempted to take the missus & walk/run it.
Not too shabby thank's. Had a good 2011 & already planning & looking ahead to 2012 ! How about yourself ?
Ha, ha unlikely NB. I think winning races will be merely reserved for my dreams now !
Wilmot Wander, anyone?
Sorry to hear you're injured Rev. What's the problem ?
Anglezarke Amble tomorrow. Too cold to walk - running will keep me warm. Then somehow I need to keep warm at CP9 on Winter Hill on Sunday. At least it'll be warmer there than CPs 4, 6 or 1/8.
Think it will be cold. But I'm looking forward to it. Just about to find out what unearthly hour I need to get up! Need to tell myself it's OK once I'm up.
