I've not long got in from work. As I pulled up in the car I noticed the window-cleaner across the road. He asked what the music was I was listening to and I told him a Trojan records rocksteady compilation. It turns out he loves reggae, ska, Northern Soul and rocksteady. Top bloke! I have just never got Gene Vincent. And since I can remember Bill Haley he was hardly before my time.
Never popular in the US (only 3 Top 40 records) because his records were mostly awful he fled to the UK where we were grateful for anybody vaguely American (Eddie Cochran, infinitely more talented, was on the slide in the US as well by the time he was killed) even an unpleasant drunk.
Brilliant guitarist in Cliff Gallup though. Pity about the dire songs and singer.
