what ltr sacs do people use or do people use bumbags? have been thinking about justifying buying a new sac:rolleyes:
forgot to ask, anyone fancy reccying part of it, i know somone was on abt posting re a reccy (fidaleo?), need to organise myself with edale reccy, edale race, 3 ppps etc
10 litre sac for me - just big enough to hold waterproof top and bottoms, light fleece, buffs and gloves, cavers survival bag, emergency rations and first aid kit.
I use a shoulder strap mounted 1/2 litre water bottle which is perfect.
The food and drink on course is so good and plentiful you really don't need to carry anything other than the emergency requirement.
Wish I was doing it again this year but just found out that I got into the Fred Whitton cycle sportive which is the day after so think I'll give it miss! (now there's the makings of an extreme triathlon.....)
Hi, Last year was my second Fellsman and I think I have sussed it now because I've finished both times and learnt a few lessons.
-do a lot of people who finish mix running with walking?
Definitely, as previously mentioned its definintely best to get across Fleet Moss and to Cray before dark. Even better if you can get to Park Rash which is my goal this year. 2/3rds of the terrain to Inglebourough is runnable before the final climb. Then its a fast descent down to the Hill Inn, Walk up Whernside, fast descent to Kingsdale, walk up Gregareth and then Run all the way to Dent, this should get you to Dent and a 1/3rd of the way round in good time. Then you can stock up on a sausage roll and some beans and walk them off on the long slog up to Blea Moor Summit. Basically from there walk the uphills and try and move as efficiently as you can over the flat (Some parts you are climbing through peat hags and walking is quicker!) and take advantage of the down hills. It is worth recceing the part of the route you expect to be doing in the dark and just make some notes on landmarks etc. Believe me when you've got 50 miles under your feet and your 15 hrs in you need all the help you can get. The best advice is just keep moving.
-food is supplied at cp along the route, altho you have to take emergency rations?
Its worthwhile just having a bag of jelly babies/gels/peanuts/mars bars just in case you are flagging in your rucksac whatever you prefer. There's plenty of food at the CPs so you don't need much just eat as much as you can. The feed CPs are normally at the bottom of a hill so you've got a walk up hill to digest it. Emergency rations are compulsory think its 300g. Some areas on the route are pretty remote.
-you need 2 maps covering the area, can you photocopy the area needed, laminate and use this instead or do you have to take the os maps?
I would recommend the Harveys maps, I have used both and find them the easiest as long as you like them. Have seen people using laminated photocopies of parts of the route but not sure if you still have to carry the maps. Probably worth asking.
-id be driving up on morning, is it possible to drop one car of at start and partners car of at finish or do you have to use official bus?
Not much parking at the start that won't cost you a few quid, the advantages of the bus are that at least when you finish you can jump in your car, no faffing about going back to Ingleton. And there is plenty of free parking at Threshfield.
Regarding bags I used an 18ltr Innov8 sack with the bladder, but I'm going for the water bottle on the shoulder approach this year, I will use the same bag as its nice and stable and I know it doesn't hurt me.
cherrs donlarko for info, id thght abt 14 ltr inov and water bottle on shoulder strap.
is it 2 harveys maps you used? was checking out fellsman site and they give you a choice, of either 1 explorer or a combination, they seem to suggest that you need to carry maps just in case you go off the laminated map.
im not sure abt the 6 am bus, it might be easier, itll just make it a 4am start to drive up.
