Excellent as per usual cant wait for next year, seeing the front runners coming down is always amazing, can't imagine the speed Kenny would be travelling, how do they do it, really need to work on my descent 160 going up 295 coming down :( need to acquire some bottle!!!!!!!!
Another year, another stabbing in Llanber!!! Great day, brilliant weather and loads of pissed up chavs around the Vic! To those of you who witnessed the fighting in Llanberis don't think that an usual weekend, loads of young chavs from other villages had arranged a fight in the village tonight that's the reason for all the police!
Just got home from a lock in, we can now hibernate until Xmas in Llanberis!!
Stephen Edwards and Jayne Lloyd, well done on organising a great day.
The last time I was there it was the same, they were turning cars over and ripping number plates off cars, throwing bottles and brawling. I knew it was a bad sign when I saw people snorting coke in the toilets, we took that as a cue to leave and we did just in time. Last time I'll bother spending anytime in Llanberis at night.
The place was full of young lads with crates of beer under their arm. And that was at lunchtime:eek:
On a different topic - we were in the Vic the weekend before the race and I was disappointed to see that the record board of winners and times hadn't been updated since 2006 - seems a shame for this to lapse - anyone have any contacts with the Vic and could ask them to add the winners since?
Just seen this on the BBC:

:(
Sad news.
It was good however to see the number of marshals, MR etc on the mountain, particularly with the number of "first time" fell/mountain runners taking part. I spoke to a couple of runners who had only ever run roads and didn't really know what to expect in this race, although a lot of them probably took it steady on the way down, I think it's more likely that experienced runners descending faster take a tumble. I hope Welsh Harrier has a speedy recovery.
Fractured right shoulder blade and broken left elbow - first broken bones for 50 years. was all set for a massive downhill run and I'd got past at least 20 bby the time I reached the Pyg track where I lost my footing and shoulder charged a big rock. Done Snowdon 5 times but Ill not bother with this race again - my style of dscending I suppose which needs 100% concentration on the terrain- there were far too many ramblers and amblers on the mountain for me. Thanks to fireman Tom of the Mountain rescue who brought me down on th train - star man
Did my first Snowdon yesterday. Quads are complaining today!
Does anyone know where I can get archive Snowdon Race results from? The website only goes back to 2002. Cheers.
Don't forget TV programme on the Snowdon Race tonight at 8pm on S4C (Sky 134)
can it be viewed online do we know
Usually here - http://www.s4c.co.uk/clic/e_index.shtml
Jimbob ,
I've not got SKY so thats a really usefull link . Thanks .
My first Snowdon Intl and it was FABULOUS! Went over for the day with Alphin, Fleeter and Fleeter's dad. All of the race is a blur in my mind today (must have been good!?) but the aching quads are a reminder. I seem to recall it was bloomin' freezin' on top. Very happy with my time and place (a shade over 1h 30m, 86th) = beginner's luck? :p Got to meet IainR and Pinno (at last!).
Oh, and I wish they'd sort out some rules for 'rights of way'. Masses of walkers and spectators out, an accident/argument just waiting to happen...
In the car on the way back it was a sorry site what with the cuts, blood and having to stop at every services for a certain member of the gang....
Sorry to learn of the tragedy on the hill. I did see a runner down with MR erecting a tent around him and administering first aid. Hope he got off the mountain as well. Does anyone know if the fatality was a runner on the way up or down?
It is however, good to see that MR are putting the organisation of the event in a positive light. A death in a race is not a good thing for the sport, but it seems that medical backup at the event was well organised.
its really sad, the bloke that died was only a few years older than me and not that far behind me on way up, my sympathy goes out to his family. i ran race and stayed in llanberis (?) on sat night, enjoyed race, didnt know about bloke dying till later on, altho i saw on way down marshells hurrying around a tent and thgt id heard another helicopter around. someone at b&b we were staying said 'well at least it he was doing something he loved as opposed sitting in front of tv watching rubbish'. im not sure if her remarks quite convey the sadness of whats happend, but i imagine theres a side of us all that can imagine the love of the hills.
It's a tricky course, I also broke my jaw and damaged my shoulder on the descent a couple of years ago.
I watched most of the S4C programme last night with english subtitles. Ian holmes on the descent was amazing.
does anyone know where half way is suppose to be, is it the main buiding on right as your going up where the table was laid out with drinks, not sure if this is half way for the train mas well?
I believe half way is a bit beyond the "Halfway House", but I'm sure someone will correct me.
Firstly - thoughts go out to the friend and family of the chap who died. It's probably no comfort to them but I think it's definitely better that it was due to a heart complaint rather than a fall.
This was my second Snowdon International. Enjoyed it nearly as much as the first although a little disappointed that a fall on the approach to Clogwyn (on the descent) cost me some time. Enjoying showing off the war wounds now though ;-)
I stayed over in Llanberis (for the first time) with my wife and daughter on Saturday night. I'd been warned about what the town can be like later in the evening but wasn't expecting it mid afternoon! Such a shame.
According to my Garmin, the halfway house was at pretty much exactly half the height of the summit (so 1780ft or so) but of course the start is at about 350ft so at that point you've climed about 1430ft but still have 1780ft to go. Not sure how accurate the figures are but it gave an altitude of 3568ft at the summit so pretty d@rn close.
Thanks for the link to the S4C programme. I asked a chap at work to record it last Monday but he's been off sick since so I don't know if he remembered or not!
I think the race is repeated again on S4C on friday at 6pm.
Amazing innit? Sounded like a really fit bloke as well. Just can't predict, can you? Condolensces to the family. :(
Its very very sad for the family and friends, although he died doing what he enjoyed.
Yeah I thought that was good. Sad as it is these things do happen in any sport and outside of sport and sometimes there is nothing anyone can do. I thought the race organisation was brilliant. For such a big race everything went smoothly.
Bwlch Glas to the summit was really bad this year, runners were getting fractious because a walker had stepped across them for the nth time and walkers were getting fractious because a runner had banged into them for the nth time. If the race could organise access to the train track for just 1 hr it would make a massive difference.
In the race I had an OK time, good climb up but gut issues on the descent meant I had to do 2 'Paulas' and dropped 2.5 mins on last years descent and finished 40 seconds slower. I was not in a good mood after the race but news like the above certainly puts things in perspective.
Hi all,
Wish I was writing my first post on this forum in different circumstances.
Mark was my uncle and as you can imagine it came as a massive shock to the whole family.
He was indeed very fit and was always out running or cycling and has been ever since I can remember.
It is some comfort that he died doing what he loved in a beautiful part of the world however he won’t be very happy with himself that it was on the way up and not on the way down!
We found out to day following the PM that he died of a heart attack as a result of heart disease.
It is my understanding that it was very quick indeed. There was a female runner, we only know as Gillian, who was right behind him. She told the doctor he just seemed to lose his footing then sat down. She stopped and could see he was in difficulty. He was barely breathing. She put her arms around him and within seconds he went unconscious. Seconds later another runner, an off duty paramedic stopped and tried his to maintain his blood flow with CPR.
The doctor arrived a short time later and efforts continued until he was air lifted of by C flt 22SQN and taken to ysbyty gwynedd but was DOA.
It is likely he suffered very little and would have just thought he had a stitch and was trying to power through it.
The event organisers did a great job on the event and have been very good to my family after the incident.
I, and the rest of the family, cannot thank everyone involved enough for their efforts especially Gillian who made sure that he was not alone.
If by any chance Gillian reads this please could she make contact as I know my family would want to speak to her personally.
Thank you all for your posts on here. It’s nice to see kind thoughts from strangers.
Martin
Sheepy,
May I offer my sincere condolences to you and the family. I can assure you that the off duty paramedic, he's my cousin, would have done all he could to save Mark's life, he was with him within seconds, probably just behind Gillian, don't know who she is sorry. I spoke to him later on in the day as he came down with the train assisting another runner who had taken a nasty tumble near to where Mark collapsed and I can tell you he was quite upset. He sees things like that quite often when he is on duty but must have come as a shock when it happened on Saturday. Should you need his telephone number at all just ask and I will send you an e-mail.
Thanks
Snowdonia Jogger
I dont know if it would work, but to find gillian you could maybe look at the results and try and find her on there.
Then contact the organiser and explain why you want to contact her. There may be something about confidentiality with giving contact details out but surely there would be an acception made.
