Assuming he's telling the truth, it's different from 2009 in that they were open and honest with the marshalls, and he was explicitly running the rest of the route unofficially, outside the race. Whereas in 2009 there was clear intent to deceive.

It all seemed above board, agreed and accepted to me from what I could tell at the finish. The day turned out perfect for a solo 19-mile run across the fells.
Daz, sorry for the radio silence. Life's too busy these days. Sorry for wrecking your OCT attempt, but there was nothing in the legs. I was only good enough for hiking, and OCT doesn't do hiking, does it? A look at my heart rate record afterwards told me how slowly I must have been going: it was much slower than normal. The previous weekend's Brecon 40 and an exhausting week with not enough sleep were not the best preparation. I must return for a better crack at it, methinks. Still, it was great to hang around at the finish to see some of the sharp end finishers. I hope to get my photographs uploaded at least before leaving for the Northants Ultra.
Steve, good to chat briefly at the start. Good result for you.
But if he cleared it with the marshalls and RO's why is it a problem? I'd have carried on..
I'd love to face an FRA disciplinary panel though.. I think I'd be very Cantona-esque in my response..
I may try and do a race in some else's name just so I can finally meet Breezey... oh and the grump.. it'd be sat in the corner.. in the dark anonymously sniping away... can't wait..
I went into fell running because of the freedom that it brings and the lack of rules and regulations, Not that i want to offend anybody but life is full of pointless rules and regs at times. I've never been a politically correct sort of person as it's not what i'm about. If somebody wants to ban me for what i did fair do's.
Like i said in the previous post i cleared it with my partner to carry on and the marshalls. i finished the event on my own bat as a training run, safely, with the correct kit and plenty of food. If the weather had been bad i probably would have pulled out. With all respect Fellhound, i know you're an experienced and very fast fell runner. I appreciate what your saying, but it was my decision just like when i ran 8 miles on the Rossy fells today. Please don't put a damper on the sport i love so much
Report with link to pictures just uploaded here.
Finally got round to my race report (uncannily similar to BritNicks, until Angle Tarn fortunately). It's here . Enjoy.
No intention to put a damper on anything Stanners. The general laid back atmosphere of fellrunning is one of the reasons I love it too and the best way to keep it that way is to stay within the spirit of the few rules there are. There has to be some framework - if only for safety's sake - and the result of ignoring it will be an increase in official intervention, which I'm sure none of us want.
The marshalls out on the course can't do much if you decide you are ripping off your number and just carrying on "outside" the event, but the rules do state that you are "expected to stay with the retiree". For an extremely challenging event like the Old County Tops the rules are surprisingly simple and unofficious. Supporting them will help to keep it that way.
My personal view is that you start this event as a team of two and should remain a team of two to the end, even if the end is premature. This attitude cost me an attempt on the BG many years ago but, hey, a team's a team.
Cheers Mick! Enjoyed reading your report!
And yes, I do believe I was the first Dutchman...feels very good!
Will send you a link, once I've finished my write-up; think it will be done before next year's OCT!
Hanno
I agree your route would have been nicer, I did it in reverse on the GL3D recently (which is partly why I avoided it, it felt steeper than undulating at the time!)
But you were just in front of us when you took the detour, and only just coming into site when we left the main road, so I think you probably lost more time than that.
Anyway, even 3 minutes is important when you've got a tight cut-off to make :)
Results are now up on Achille Ratti website.

I know Britnick don't carry much weight on him, but Stickport Harriers!
A typo, nobodies perfict:)
I noticed that, Steve. I did titter.
I WILL be back better rested to do it justice and give it the respect it deserves. This year was just the taster.
I agree, especially in the light of recent events. I myself hate rules and regulations, and there is nothing more I like than to go on long solo runs in the Lakes, but if you enter Fell races you should respect the rules set down, if anything had happened, and the press had got hold of the story do you think they would take it at face value, no they would try and sensationalize it, and subsiquently blame would point to the RO.
Also I cannot believe that this was endorsed after the events from the previous year when two runners were named and banned for the same infringement.
Stannner if you empty your private message box I will be able to reply to your PM.

Ooh Dutch Peaks has finally written up his thesis on the OCT.

Yours,
Rich the Rat Slayer ;)
Brilliant ! Had me laughing my porridge oot through my nose.
Brilliant report, heard someone in the toilets on Saturday morning talking bout rats, must have been you ladies. I was up the posh end of the campsite, just had fluffy bunnies to contend with. Well done both, cheerfulness in the the face of adversity:thumbup:
Quality write up Dutch Peaks:thumbup:
Cracking write up there Hanno! I'd love to do this one year, just need to get some distance fitness and find another fool to run with!
Thanks for all your nice feedback - and thanks to the Rat Slayer for sticking my blabberings on here...
Normally I'm a lot more to-the-point, but you can't really do justice to 37 miles and stealing rats in 10 words, can you?
See you all at the next 'why-are-we-doing-this-event' !
Hanno
Just over a week to my first attempt at this race and getting very excited but also a bit daunted by it. After trawling through this and another couple of threads I thought it might be useful for other new-comers to summarise the main route advice. Full Route Summary
From the New Dungeon Ghyll, over to Grasmere, Tongue Gill, Grisedale Tarn & Helvellyn. Down to Wythburn Church where there are excellent refreshments laid on. Then it's up Wythburn, skirt round High Raise to Angle Tarn where there is a kit check. Scafell Pike, down to Great Moss, over to Mosedale & down to Cockley Beck where there is another superb refreshments stop. Then it's up to the Old Man, back to the Three Shires Stone, down to Blea Tarn and you're nearly home.
NewDungeon Ghyll to Helvellyn
Go along the track from the NDG, a short way along the road then over toGrasmere by the path that leaves the road near Harry Place Farm, above Chapel Stile, below Silver Howe dropping into the south end ofthe village.
GridRef for turn off from Chapel Stile: NY31360603
CP1, GR 339098, Path Junction is just after the gate by the gill andimpossible to miss
From Grisedale tarn it is slightly quicker to take a long traversingascent to the west aiming to hit the ridge at the col behind Dollywaggon.
Helvellynto Angle Tarn
Toget from Helvellyn summit to Wythburn go pretty much direct, aimingto hit the path just before it enters the forest.
Thebest line up Wythburn is left of the stream until the last level bitwhere you can cross to the right and then on left again, ascendingthe steep part along the path.
Thereis a path/trod pretty well all the way up to Greenup Edge, althoughvery boggy in places, then contour round High Raise (no trod) anddrop down to Stake Pass and onto the path to Angle Tarn.Climbingabout 100' to stay well above the path to angle tarn then follow alevel traverse gives a lot better running ground than the main path
ScafellPike to Cockley Beck
Fordirect route you sort of drop off the side of Scafell Pike, overRough Crag and to the west of Dow Crag. It isn't as bad as it looks.
Ifyou manage to get off the end of Rough Crag safely, go South downhillwith Dow Crag on your left, crossing the stream on the left lowerdown. If you don't get a chance to recce it and cannot follow anyoneretrace your steps and descend Little Narrowcove; It is onlymarginally slower.
Crossingfrom the base of little narrow cove , straight across the Esk bottomto gain higher ground on the other side before heading towardsMosedale was certainly a lot dryer than the valley floor.
CockleyBeck to Coniston Old Man
FromCockley Beck you may (or may not) follow a stream half way up to thesaddle but in dry conditions there is no water after that untilBleamoss Beck. Take the path up towards Grey Friar, then at abouthalf height where that path swings right, you can swing further leftto dead reckon the coll between Grey Friar and Great Carrs: fromthere there is a path that does a rising traverse to the ridgebypassing Swirl How completely. Stay just right of the ridge path fora good running line (there is a trod used on Duddon race there) butbe careful at Brim Fell: don't take the first traverse path you see:it goes to Dow Crag! There is a high traverse that leads to the OldMan, further up Brim Fell.
ConistonOld Man to 3 Shires
Headingback use left hand side traverse lines but regain the ridge afterGreat Carrs, and don't attempt to drop too early: wait till you seethe cairn.
Returnalong the contouring path but when it drops towards the col betweenGreat Carrs and Grey Friar leave it and head roughly N to join asmall path W of Great Carrs, which runs NE and joins the main ridgepath to the Three Shires stone. It is a faint path and when in ahurry you can cross it without seeing it. There are some small shortcuts around Little Carrs but in bad visibility stick to the mainpath.
3Shires to New Dungeon Ghyll
Fromthestone go down the road (yes, honestly) and when you approach a wallon the right you will see a trod on your left that becomes an obviouspath up the left side of the tarn. This is parallel with the road"Side Gates" and will take you to the cattle grid as thetop of the zig-zags leading down into Great Langdale. Cross the road, follow the path down and across a couple of fields back to NDG.
Water
Watersources include the beck to Grisedale tarn, the tarn, a brook youcross on the way down from Helvellyn, the checkpoint at Wythburn, waytoo much water in wythburn, Angle tarn, Esk Hause, Little Narrowcove, the Esk and Cockley beck checkpoint.
Theonly section without water is high up on Grey Friarnotts col to theold man and down towards three shires - so carry some water there(from Cockley Beck).
Food
Wythburn- tea, squash, water, jam butties, malt loaf and possibly flap jack
CockleyBeck - tea, squash, water, butties - cheese, tuna mayo, egg mayo, bananas, fruit cake
Finish- tea, coffee, squash soup, butties, and cake
Hi, I'm unable to compete in this due to illness but my partner is now stranded. Please get in touch for a spot in the event.
If anyone you know may be interested then please pass this on
Thanks
John
I am now free that weekend, so would be up for joining with either of you or anyone else if they are in the same situation.
I haven't reccd any of the route but know bits & pieces of it.
Anyway drop me a message.
Oli
Hi Oil, I'll send you the same message as I sent Tony via private messages. Cheers
John
Spot gone, thanks guys :D
Is there a protocol for replacements? Can it be done on the day or must it be done in advance? Can't find info on AR website.
LdR
Hi gents,
Are either of you still looking for a partner for Saturday? I'm pulling out after an old injury came back to haunt me on my last long run before the event (sod's law and all that) but my partner still wants to go and get round it.
He said he's not be the fastest but he has completed it before so knows the route and his nav is good, he's a very good orienteer alongside the fell running.
If either of you are still looking let me know.
Cheers
Andy
Done, PM sent :)
Right one more ale then bed. Carbo loading on ale is great ;-)
Good Luck with this today!!! It may well be a grueller!!!
